Artificial Trees Convert CO2 To O2

398px-Trees_near_CoggeshallWhat would happen if there were no longer any trees? Well, we could just make our own. Via AOL News:

It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature. Or is it? If you’re not getting enough air, you might want to spend time sitting under a newly designed artificial tree that converts carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen.

In the modern world of urban pollution, we can’t seem to grow enough trees to naturally convert carbon dioxide into life-sustaining air — the process of photosynthesis —  until now.

Researchers at New York’s Columbia University, working with Influx Studio in Paris, France, have designed a faux or artificial tree. It’s basically a machine fashioned to resemble a dragon blood tree, complete with wide branches and umbrellalike tops that are used as support for the large solar panels that will power the tree, according to PhysOrg.com.

Uhhh… How about we just plant plant more REAL trees? Wouldn’t that be more be cheaper AND more beautiful? Make them fruit trees while we’re at it. O2 + Nourishment!! How about that?!

Or start using hemp for paper instead of old trees. Or maybe we should stop chopping down the rainforest for the subsidized beef industry.
…Nahhhh! That’s too complicated. Let just build electronically respirating tree-bots instead.

When are we going to learn? These things always start out good then turn out really really bad.

How about installing these synthetic trees in mufflers, co2 producing factories, etc. Seeing as these probably dont need sunlight. Why not put a couple billion dollars into this and help save our planet?

That would both make sense, and give people a sense of leisure that would just be unacceptable.

why do I get the feeling that these things will require a lot of electricity to run at an effective level? (electricity powered by our coal and gas plants..?)

I’ll take the other comment you made as an actual point you’re trying to make. Ok I’m wrong; they are apparently solar powered. But for some reason i feel the conversion efficiency of air for these, and the cost of production etc. are far inferior to a large number of cheap-as-free seeds for trees instead of these fancy streetbound glowsticks.

Has anyone actually read the article? They are solar powered air makers…is that not good enough?

Firstly, I dislike how people say things so authoritatively as if you burger flipping clowns actually know more than the scientists who designed these trees. Pro tip: YOU DO NOT.

Secondly, planting trees is great but it’s not like a fully grown tree is going to magically sprout up out of the ground in a couple of days. It can take decades upon decades for trees to reach maturity.

Whats the point you’re trying to make? Weather it takes decades or a century doesnt stop the fact that they are growing and producing o2 as they grow. Not to mention the fact that we have tree farms that can grow trees in a fraction of the time it usually takes.

      • Kezcot

Eh I hate people who don’t know science. Read this, It takes a tree 20 years to grow large enough to start converting CO2 to Oxygen. You can plant all the trees you want but it takes 20 years for them to start producing oxygen and not to mention trees don’t produce a lot of oxygen themselves. It would take 20 trees just to provide oxygen to a family of 5 even then I’m not certain it would be enough. These artificial trees can produce plenty more oxygen then a natural tree but they would only be used in big cities and possible interplanetary colonization’s like on mars or the moon never just thrown all over the world like natural trees won’t be needed.  The government and scientist wouldn’t allow for the artificial trees to replace the real ones because simply it is just a crime towards nature when it comes to food chains in which some animals feed on trees or live in them and not to mention solar flares that could fry these artificial trees. If we replaced every real tree with a fake one (or became more dependent on them) and a solar flare would penetrate Earth’s defenses, every living thing on earth would die in a matter of months. Also, your comment “Not to mention the fact that we have tree farms that can grow trees in a fraction of the time it usually takes.” is false. It makes them grow significantly fast by 3/4 the time needed not 1/4 because that’s like taking a baby and trying to make him a man (age 21) in 5.25 years or 5 years and 91.31054975 days. Unless science has past me up then i would believe I am right on this. If I am wrong so be it, but don’t blast it like these “fake” trees (even though they aren’t fake because they would take up space, aliens on my car is something that is fake) are going to replace the beauty of real ones. Over sensitive people like you keep our society from progressing forward into protecting not only us but the Earth.

those are SWEET looking. i want a mini one for inside my house. and all that fresh air -indoors- would do me some good.

  • Idiot

The important question is how much co2 was produced in the making of a single tree like this, solar panels and all and the amount of time it would take for that tree to balance out the co2 it produced with its co2 to o2 conversion. They may not be worth the effort, especially if they require any sort of maintenance.

I totally agree with your observation. Interesting program.its sounds funny that artificial trees convert CO2 to O2 when i read this article i came to know the actual properties of photosynthesis. Thanks for such a beautiful blog.

Its OK that this kind of tree seem to be planted. But first we have our nature till now to save. Lets try to secure original greeneries.
