‘Baja Arizona’ To Become 51st State?

The Week reports:

Liberal leaders in southern Arizona, tired of enduring conservative victories in their state legislature on everything from immigration to gun laws, have a plan: Break away and form a separate state known as Baja Arizona. The idea has been around for years, but a new “Start Our State” effort is seeking a referendum to allow residents of liberal-leaning Pima County to vote on whether to secede. Could Baja Arizona become the 51st state?

In Arizona, anything can happen: Sure, it sounds “crazy,” says E.J. Montini in The Arizona Republic. But the wacky conservatives in the state capital have transformed the “ridiculous” into the “plausible” by “trying to pass bills that would allow lawmakers to ‘nullify’ any federal law they didn’t like.” If state conservatives can essentially secede from the national government, there’s no reason the people of Pima County can’t break away from the rest of Arizona…

Another sign of possible second US civil war. Look at how combative the relationship is between the president and the state governors. Its not a sure thing, but I feel that when the healthcare mandate comes into play, and some governors refuse to honor it, we may be looking at some kind of conflict. The nullification law in Arizona mentioned in this article is a good example of the differences brewing. Not that I agree with either side, but we haven’t seen this kind of bickering between levels of government since the civil rights era.

I’m sure Texas will secede before these guys do. In regards to their claim that AZ is passing laws to nullify any federal law they don’t like, it’s just more scare tactic BS. Anything that the states are allowed to oppose will fall under the 10th amendment, and if the federal government insists that all states follow a given law, they’ll find ways to enforce it directly (FDA/commerce clause) or indirectly (much like the federally “option” of make your drinking age 21 or loose your Federal funding for road repair).

Well if the state was to loose road money for not bowing down to Adolf Obama and the boys, just refuse to repair Federal highways. Sure would bring down the cost.

The liberals in Arizona as well as the rest of the country should all just move to california and mass. Those two states we could do without.
