After years of heading the exiled Tibetan movement, the Dalai Lama will resign his political role. After years of leading his people both spiritually and politically he believes it is time for an elected official, but will remain involved with the movement. The Bangkok Post reports:

The Dalai Lama announced Thursday his plan to retire as political head of the exiled Tibetan movement, saying the time had come for his replacement by a “freely elected” leader.

The Dalai Lama, whose more significant role is as the movement’s spiritual leader, said he would seek an amendment allowing him to resign his political office when the exiled Tibetan parliament meets next week.

“My desire to devolve authority has nothing to do with a wish to shirk responsibility,” he said in an address in Dharamshala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile in northern India.

“It is to benefit Tibetans in the long run. It is not because I feel disheartened,” he added.

I like the guy, I went to a speech by him, once and he mentioned a very interesting term that was outside of my conception at the time: a Secular Sage.

In this sense, he seemed to point out the need for wisdom in any society, even a secular one.

Dalai Lama has served well and he deserves a life less complicated. It is hard to maintain a good political and spiritual life and he did it. I adore him and his will.

The fact is, if the Chinese gov’t would BACK THE FUCK OFF all of these monks and nuns and average Tibetans would just go back to doing what they did before – meditating, farming, craftspeople – simple life stuff. The Dalai Lama has frequently said all he really wants to do is go into meditation retreat and really focus on mind training. But he tried to protect as many of his people and his culture as best he could.

He’s a “threat” to exactly no one but the Chinese authoritarians, for whom it’s not enough that they conquer your people, they have to rule your mind too.

Recent hilarity from them was the Commies demanding that he “follow the rules about reincarnation”. A statement that proves they know crap about it, and also that their real intent is to appoint their own Dalai Lama, via their fake Panchen Lama.

They fail to understand that according to Buddhism, when you reach a certain state of mental control, you can drive your consciousness to wherever it’s needed. Ironically, the Dalai Lama has frequently said he’d like to reincarnate in the West, because he thinks he can actually reach more people with the message of compassion there.

But the nerve of the Chinese to simultaneously beat the crap out of Buddhists and Buddhist culture in Tibet and then demand he “follow Buddhist procedure” (as if His Holiness is following one of Mao’s Five Year Plans) — it’s astonishing the level of gall some people have.
