Did Capitalism End Life On Mars?

225px-HugoChavez1823.jpegHugo Chavez really, really hates capitalism. The Venezuelan leader cites the barren planet Mars as an example of what happens when capitalism takes over the world (report from Reuters via Yahoo Finance):

Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on the planet Mars, Venezuela’s socialist President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday.

“I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,” Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.

Chavez, who also holds capitalism responsible for many of the world’s problems, warned that water supplies on Earth were drying up.

“Careful! Here on planet Earth where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts,” Chavez said, sipping from a glass of water.

He added that the West’s attacks on Libya were about water and oil reserves…

Wow, Reuters really has no sense of humor.

He’s not LITERALLY saying that capitalism/imperialism somehow journeyed to Mars and decimated the place. He’s simply saying that capitalism/imperialism can take a place like Earth and turn it into something that LOOKS like Mars.

And he’s totally CORRECT about that.

Have you see what drilling the tar sands in Canada does to one of the last pristine arboreal forests in the world?

Or what the coal industry’s mountain-topping activities are doing to Appalachia?

Or how the beef industry and slash-and-burn agri-business is decimating the rainforests at the rate of a football field every SECOND?

Not to mention the droughts across the world caused by global catastrophic climate change.

Or the giant mining/drilling operations in place like Chile or Uganda or entire swaths of newly-minted corporatist China?

    Or fracking operations in Pennsylvania?

Or the entire ocean floor in the Gulf of Mexico, that’s now coated with goop from the little capitalist “incident” there…..?

But it’s much more important for Reuters (and apparently majestic) to reinforce the false corporate meme that “This Chavez guy is CRAZY!” (And not the democratically-elected leader of a sovereign nation who’s won by huge majorities each time, and who’s country currently has a budget SURPLUS, unlike some nations I could name which are still reeling from corporate conservo-bot policies of the precise type he’s calling out here.)

This article is the sort of thing one does when you’ve screwed up on booting him from power by other more illegal means. They instead resort to character assassination tactics, because they failed to ACTUALLY assassinate him.

And damned if he doesn’t just keep speaking out against the corporate elites. Why, the NERVE!

    LOL.

I bet there are millions of intelligent species in the universe, and I bet homo sapiens is the only one that’s invented either “Capitalism” or “Communism.”

That’s not to say we’re smarter than the rest.

Why is this tagged as “Bizarre”?
whenever the topic lands on another planet its automatically “Bizarre”?
I believe there are many planets besides Earth existing in this environment we live in.
He made a very great analogy, I find its not bizarre at all.

Chavez’s remark is purely rhetorical. If you listen to Chomsky (admittedly another hater of capitalism), once in a while you’ll hear him say “Supposing aliens took a look at Earth, what would they think?” This is Chomsky, the most cited academician alive. Claiming that Chavez said capitalism ended life on Mars is too stupid to seriously discuss.

By the way, Chavez happens to be a democratically elected president. He has been elected again and again and again in monitored elections. Contrast Chavez with George Bush Jr., who, according to investigative journalist Greg Palast, stole not one but two American presidential elections. That Bush stole the first election in particular is incontestable. In the 2004 election the choice was between Bush of Skull&Bones, and Kerry of Skull&Bones. Some democracy! Moreover, George Bush is a heretical Satanist who claims to be Christian. Ah, you say, now you’re sprouting nonsense! Don’t believe me? Look up Alex Jones’s video footage of the happenings at the Bohemian Grove, where George Bush and a bunch of other oligarchs gather annually to burn a human being in effigy in front of a giant owl statue. Caught on video! Can’t make this up! And Bush has the gall to claim he is Christian… Tell me, who is the crazy one, Bush or Chavez? Has Chavez done the worst international crime there is, for which the Nazis hanged – unprovoked invasion of a sovereign country? Has Bush?

Under Bush’s rule America fell apart. Remember September 2008. Look at all the relevant statistics. Under Chavez, life in Venezuela has improved significantly. Poverty has fallen.

First that “who the hell are you to talk like that to Obama?” post from a couple of days ago, and now this… Come on, Disinfo!

He’s absolutely right. Mars has rocks, Earth has rocks. Mars has sand, Earth has sand, Mars has ice and we have ice. How can you possibly dispute the correlations!?! The “face” on Mars is obviously the only remaining land mark to the failed capitalist society that once flourished there. I have made up stories in my head about how Mars was once a Utopian Socialist society until they were infected with the disease of capitalism.

Or maybe 5by5 is right and Reuter has no sense of humor.

Capitalism – destruction of the earth to benefit a few. Communism destruction of the earth to benefit many. Insatiable consumption on both sides making locusts look like Jenny Craig. The leaders of both systems are pawns of the powerful elite. However, before I wrote the preceding sentences, I forgot 5by5 explained the history of the world, and why Chavez is a spotless god, since he extracted all those minerals without spilling a drop on the environment, all the workers got paid, and central planning functioned like well oiled machine, but in reality members of the boli-bourgeoisie got a hummer in an imported hummer, drinking imported whiskey, wearing imported suits. However, apparently its ok to rail against oil, from a computer made from metals and plastic parts extracted or made of oil, while spouting off that its either/or. Bureaucracy kills on all sides, but people are too comfortable in their rhetoric and suffering to care about. If capitalism never created the energy crisis to send oil prices skyrocketing, would Chavez and his “free market” counterparts, the oligarchs in Russia, be relevant? Mafia business on all sides
