God’s Name Is “Jealous”

TimmyThe following is another chapter from my disinformation book, 50 Things You’re Not Supposed to Know: Volume 2, published in 2004. For more on me go to The Memory Hole or follow me @RussKick on Twitter.

There’s an old joke that says God’s name is Harold, as in: “Our Father, who art in Heaven, Harold be thy name…”

The strange thing is, that’s not too much off the mark, only the truth is even weirder. The Lord does indeed have a name, kind of like Andrew or Beth or José.

It’s right there in the Bible, at Exodus 34:14. Moses has trudged up Mount Sinai with a second pair of stone tablets, on which God will write the Ten Commandments. Moses and the Big G engage in some repartee, then God says:

“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God”

This is straight out of the King James Version. God reveals “his” own name: Jealous.

In the original Hebrew, the key words in this verse are shem and qanna’. According to one of the standard reference works in this area — A Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Hebrew Bible by James Strongs — shem is a noun meaning “name.” One of its specific denotations is “the Name (as designation of God).” The word qanna’ means “jealous” and is applied only to God.

Other English translations say the same basic thing as the King James Version. The New International Version gives it as: “Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” The English Standard Version phrases it parenthetically: “(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God).” The New International Readers Version gives God a more relaxed feel: “Do not worship any other god. I am a jealous God. In fact, my name is Jealous.”

Why isn’t this mentioned in Sunday school? Perhaps because it could lead to children pledging, “One nation, under Jealous,” people cursing, “Jealous damn it!” or the government stamping on currency: “In Jealous we trust.”

But if you’re going to accept the Bible, then you have to accept it when God reveals his own name, no matter how odd or silly.

May Jealous have mercy on my soul.

Really, they wrote this article? I’m not super religious but this article seems to be a waste of space. If I’m not wrong it also says that the name of God is incomprehensible to the human mind. I’m paraphrasing here but I know it’s in there somewhere.

Allah is not the same as God.

The God of the Bible is a Triune God, that is, God existing in three persons, God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit. Allah is a fictitious god. The God of the Bible is real. There is a reason why Jesus is the ONLY way to God, making all religions but Christianity false:

Humankind is separated from God by sin. In order to reconnect with God, we have to get rid of our sin. None of us can make ourselves sin-free. Christ, the second person of the Trinity, came to earth as both man and God. Because he was God Incarnate, he was sin-free. He atoned for our sins with his death and resurrection. When I came to the Lord, he exchanged his righteousness for my sins, giving me right standing with God.

All other religions are about man attempting to reach out to a far-off God and earn their salvation. Christianity is the ONLY religion in which God came to us and invited us into a personal relationship with him. No other religions deal with the issue of the sin nature with which all of us are born. Only Jesus deals with sin.

There are many names for God. Father, Prince of Peace, Jehovah, Emmanuel, Abba, Mighty Counselor, Alpha and Omega, etc.which all have their own meanings. I would imagine the creator of the universe would have many names. He is called a jealous God because of his love for us. Just as a lover would become jealous if their loved one was loving someone else, or didn’t love him back. Sorry, doesn’t offend me at all to know how much I am loved.

“Just as a lover would become jealous if their loved one was loving someone else, or didn’t love him back.”

Yes, but if he then went a killed the ‘someone else’ it would be murder, and that has what has happened over the centuries in regard to deities ‘opposed’, shall we say, to Jehovah’s (Elohim, Allah) will. There comes a time when one must accept the wishes of another. To force one to love them with threats of endless torture (or death) if their love is not returned is sociopathic.

      • MLC

God doesn’t force anybody to love him. He gave us free will and the choice to decide whether we want to follow him or not.

I love God. Why? Because when he revealed himself and his love to me, I chose to respond positively. I didn’t do so out of fear of endless torture or death. I did so out of joy. When the Bible says the beginning of wisdom is the fear of God, it doesn’t mean terror. The word “fear” means awe or reverence.

I don’t know why atheists get so excited about hell. If they don’t want anything to do with God in this life, God will confirm that choice in the next life. They will get to spend eternity separated from him because that’s what they want.

15For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.  16So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
           17For
the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I
raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name

18Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

Don’t like your lack of free will? Screw you. He’s God and you’re not.

21Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

How can the one and only “God” be jealous? He ought to know he’s the only one. I bet, in reality, He has a sense of humor, laughing at the polytheists… “Go to hell, LOL!”

Just another article that portrays itself as being somehow extraordinary because it can check the meaning of a word in a dictionary without comprehending the language. Besides, no serious scholar would waste any time with the KJV translation.

The word שם – Shem does not only mean name in the way that name functions in English. It can also function in the bible as a literary description of the essence of a character or object (which is what names are understood to be in the Literary world of Bible). Further, descriptions like קנא – Qana’ can also function as nouns, as the very next words in the verse emphasize – אֵל קַנָּא הוּא – A jealous God is He.
קַנָּא שְׁמוֹ אֵל קַנָּא הוּא therefore is best rendered as His essence is jealousy, He is a jealous God.

There’s plenty of interesting points in the bible, but nonsensical flawed rants based on unfamiliarity with the text and lack of research is just silly.

There is a difference between God’s jealousy and human jealousy. If I am jealous, it is for myself. When God is jealous, it’s for us. Here’s how it works:

God is love and wants to bless us all the time. When he tells us not to do something, he is saying, “I don’t want you to do that because you will get hurt doing it. I love you and I don’t want you to get hurt.” The Israelites would get involved in the religions of the pagans which involved practices such as passing babies through fire, for example. This made God jealous, not of the false gods, but FOR the Israelites. His jealousy was for their well-being, not for himself at all.

I have heard it said that Oprah Winfrey gave up on the God of the Bible because she misunderstood what it meant when the Bible calls God a jealous God. It’s a shame people don’t do the research and find out the truth instead of letting a lie dictate how they feel and think about God.

  • Larchoye

So, allegedly god is jealous of something else he created? (If he truly was the creator of everything).

And now wait a minute- “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God”, implies the existence of other god’s, which must *at least* be figments of god’s imagination… Since god created everything, and assuming it was ON PURPOSE- then everything must be a figment of god’s imagination, or at least WAS a figment of his imagination, prior to him actually creating everything.

Now, again: if god was truly the creator of everything- then god must have ALSO created HIMSELF, unless of course god is somehow a figment of his own imagination. (Both of these statements have an equal value, in that “something creating itself” and “a thought thinking itself into existence” recurse infinitely- but only if you start time at the END, in which case you interestingly wind up infinitely recursing towards the beginning- but will never reach it! So we can never reach a beginning, since we can only start at the END.

hrm, brain is stuck right there for the moment… Can anyone draw a clear consequence off of that last statement? I think all I can conclude is that either god cannot exist (as described), or the universe will exist forever…

I bet he’s jealous as fuck right now.

All religions (atheism included) are EQUALLY INVALID, because NOBODY knows what happens when you die.

God is jealous in the most Holy of ways. Like a Husband and Wife being one and the commitment they have made to each other. God is not sinful man, so it isn’t the envy that we know and experience every day. God is the creator and is sinless so therefore how can he be humanly jealous? He can’t. Cool you know 2 hebrew words in a verse but you don’t know anything about God.

14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

/God doesn’t force anybody to love him. He gave us free will and the choice to decide whether we want to follow him or not./

Someone has never read Romans 9.
    11(For the children
being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the
purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of
him that calleth;)  12It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
15For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.  16So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
     17For
the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I
raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name
might be declared throughout all the earth.

     22What
if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured
with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,

Yeah, it’s always the translation’s fault when a christer doesn’t agree with the statement.

How about from the Masorectic Text to English?

    .

    14 For thou shalt bow down to no other god; for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God;

Of course not. Random guy on the internets says it should say something else when nearly every other English translation renders it as God’s name is Jealous.
