20 Signs That A ‘Horrific’ Global Food Crisis Is Coming

Starved girlZero Hedge writes via The Economic Collapse Blog:

In case you haven’t noticed, the world is on the verge of a horrific global food crisis. At some point, this crisis will affect you and your family. It may not be today, and it may not be tomorrow, but it is going to happen.

Crazy weather and horrifying natural disasters have played havoc with agricultural production in many areas of the globe over the past couple of years. Meanwhile, the price of oil has begun to skyrocket. The entire global economy is predicated on the ability to use massive amounts of inexpensive oil to cheaply produce food and other goods and transport them over vast distances. Without cheap oil the whole game changes.

Topsoil is being depleted at a staggering rate and key aquifers all over the world are being drained at an alarming pace. Global food prices are already at an all-time high and they continue to move up aggressively. So what is going to happen to our world when hundreds of millions more people cannot afford to feed themselves?

Most Americans are so accustomed to supermarkets that are absolutely packed to the gills with massive amounts of really inexpensive food that they cannot even imagine that life could be any other way. Unfortunately, that era is ending.

There are all kinds of indications that we are now entering a time when there will not be nearly enough food for everyone in the world. As competition for food supplies increases, food prices are going to go up. In fact, at some point they are going to go way up.

Let’s look at some of the key reasons why an increasing number of people believe that a massive food crisis is on the horizon.

The following are 20 signs that a horrific global food crisis is coming….

#1 According to the World Bank, 44 million people around the globe have been pushed into extreme poverty since last June because of rising food prices.

#2 The world is losing topsoil at an astounding rate. In fact, according to Lester Brown, “one third of the world’s cropland is losing topsoil faster than new soil is forming through natural processes”.

#3 Due to U.S. ethanol subsidies, almost a third of all corn grown in the United States is now used for fuel. This is putting a lot of stress on the price of corn.

#4 Due to a lack of water, some countries in the Middle East find themselves forced to almost totally rely on other nations for basic food staples. For example, it is being projected that there will be no more wheat production in Saudi Arabia by the year 2012.

#5 Water tables all over the globe are being depleted at an alarming rate due to “overpumping”. According to the World Bank, there are 130 million people in China and 175 million people in India that are being fed with grain with water that is being pumped out of aquifers faster than it can be replaced. So what happens once all of that water is gone?…

  1. What “coming”?

It’s already here and been here for like the past 30 years. A child dies like every 3 seconds from preventable diseases and malnutrition. Places like Chad or the DRC are IN the apocalypse right now.

  5. Oil prices skyrocket as oil production is still reaching all time highs…… The only real reason oil prices are so high is because some people are so greedy.

    • Oil prices are so high because markets will pay for it. Had we taken Pres. Carter seriously 30 years back for us to begin a transition to alternatives systems we would now be in better position to negotiate those prices. Now our National security is as has been, in the hands of our potential opponents..

      • Are you talking about negotiating with the Corporations that are running the oil industry? I know, america didn’t want to listen to his “Malaise Speech”, so we elected Regan instead and went the total opposite direction.

  7. I currently live outside the U.S. in a place that is horribly dependent on foreign food imports. It’s a bigger problem than people can possibly see from the American reality-tunnel.

Here’s a horrifying thought — what if there will be no Armegeddon?

What if hordes of innocent people die ugly needless deaths every year, while the powerful and comfortable remain physically untouched as they discuss the suffering of the unfortunates? What if people who can afford to by MREs and water purification systems and gold ingots are doing little more than collecting talismans to ward off the guilt of their elite position? What if there has *always* been an Armageddon for some, the others, those people, and well-fed rich people have always ignored them? What if there will be no final purifying collapse of the System, because the System itself runs on the energy of a continual collapse?

But no. That is simply to horrifying to even consider.

So prepare for the End. This time for sure!

one major problem with helping the needy is the problem that the aid never really gets to them as you can see with top heavy “charities” and the situation that happened in Somalia, people give up trying to help when it becomes apparent that only a small portion benefit.

      • That’s the spirit! The Crisis isn’t an array of problems — it’s a state of mind! Why bother “doing” anything when it won’t really help the unfortunates? Better to remain passive in both voice and action.

Besides, it’s all going to Crash soon anyway. So let’s all stock up on iodine tablets and hide in the basement until the Revolution/Rapture comes.

you may not like it but it is a fact, nothing will change until a majority of aid actually is transmitted to the target populations not administrators and warlords. in my opinion the idea of aid is the wrong approach, food and water will help people in the short run but only effort and money aimed at changing the cycles that keep those people poor will lead to long lasting change

  21. This problem is as old as life. Today, we thin herds of various species, with the humanitarian compassion ideology, that it will diminish their pain, of a slow starving death and or violent scenarios amongst themselves. Consider those that promote, “Go Forth And Multiply” and discourage planned parenthood and education of contraceptives. Advocating that a species populace is to populate beyond the substance’s that can be provided. Perhaps a solution can be arrived at, by educating those that promote false teachings, of population growth and suppress those that lack the intelligence to grasp the basic principles of X amount of life per acreage capabilities to sustain said life!

  24. someone somewhere once came up with something called the georgia guidestones, wonder if that was just a bad joke? it is always continually lamented that people will never learn, yet sometimes I feel some have learned something and are willing to do whatever it takes to reach it, whether positive or negative….with the resources to back it up.

You all worry about things you have absolutely no control over; except to piss and moan. If you want to do something, be a lobbyist, or call your senetors and reps CONSTANTELY. (sorry for the spelling). If we cant be backed by the people in office, then its time to take a stand and go to there offices individually. What ever it takes. Martin Luther King did pretty good.
