China’s Ghost Cities And Malls (Video)

SBS Dateline reports:

Vast new cities of apartments and shops are being built across China at a rate of ten a year, but they remain almost completely uninhabited ghost towns. It’s all part of the government’s efforts to keep the economy booming, and there are many people who would love to move in, but it’s simply too expensive for most.

Video journalist Adrian Brown wanders through malls of vacant shops, and roads lined with empty apartment buildings … 64 million apartments are said to be empty across the country and one of the few shop owners says he once didn’t sell anything for four or five days.

So are the efforts to boost the economy going to end up having the opposite effect and creating a financial crisis for China?

For more information, see original article.

Smart moves by China. Building for the future. Forget whether there are occupants or not, it’s not the main priority. The main priority is to get rid of the USD they hold as much as possible by buying raw materials and building as much as possible. Today, they maybe unoccupied but when the USD plunges, the Chinese will be much richer and can afford to buy these “empty” buildings.

Could be, it seems that China is placing quite a large wager.

    • BuzzCoastin

You got one part of the story right, the Chinese gov is rapidly spending their rapidly devaluing US $$.

But the other part of the story is that all those empty places are owned outright; they are kinda like savings accounts made out of concrete. Real Estate in China has been appreciating at about 15% a year and unlike the US mortgage bubble, 90% of these buildings are paid for in cash. And with 1.450 billion people to house the demand will be strong for awhile.

Totally Capitalist, Corporatist, marinated minds, completely Capitalist, Corporatist, propagandized, completely ROI oriented, usury acclimatized minds have great difficulty understanding this communist phenomenon. Profit oriented, tit for tat, quid pro quo minds cannot see what is really happening here.
This western scewed propaganda piece does not jive with the communist, ten year plans of the Central Planning Committees. If the fine minds that run China, a run-away successful empire, see fit to do this they have reason – as much reason as they had laughing out loud at Timmy Geithner when he espoused his Western economic nonsense in Beijing, begged for huge loans, and was refused, not that long ago. Rest assured, Chinese communists march to the beat of a different drum, and Beware! It just may be a better beat than has led the American people from proletariat to precariat status in a decade, sent the U.S. dollar down to Hell, ruined the U.S. infrastructure, poisoned U.S. foods with chemicals, preservatives, hormones even harmful bacteria. loaded Americans with throw-away products, planned obsolescence based goods, all in the name of corporate profits. Be well aware, Americans no longer produce real wealth, no Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, Studebakers, Packards, to be found, now Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru, reign supreme on American roads, all, created real Asian wealth, not real wealth in America, only speculative, paper wealth here. Compare this ‘Ghost City’ to Detroit City. Which has more value? Look to the ‘Rust Belt’ of America, Where is the value? Carefully examine the dry, the salted, farmland in California – victim of corrupt corporate thievery, in dire need of government interventions, ten year plans of more – where is the value?
It is time, now, in the latter days, as we are, of the last, the greatest, Caucasian empire the world will ever know, to reflect honestly, to fairly judge, the conversion of a Democratic America to a Corpocracy these past few decades, and to realize that the current state of affairs in America is a mad rush to the bottom, a bankruptcy waiting to happen, huge debts incurred to fill the coffers of the Uber-Rich, the Mega sized Multi-Nationals, and we must dismiss the popular propaganda resting heavily on an illusory America of the 1950′s, and realize the current-day truth. The proletariat, the once happy, wealthy, working folk of America, have been reduced to precariat, have been disenfranchised completely, and stand now on the sidelines, ever so confused, by the difference in the propagandized lies of the Capitalists, Corporatists, Hollywood, advertising videos, magazine representations, and the reality of their lives. Even now, they call for legalization of sedative drugs for solace, over and above even job-creation, industry founding, even education in America destroyed! Imagine, an American President, Obama, forced to admit, that in his country, the purportedly richest country on earth, best country to live in on earth, education rates only 39th on the scale. For shame America! Even seemingly illogical communist Chinese beat you out here! huge vacant cities, ready for proletariat, not precariat, domestic, nuclear/electric, not foreign oil fired, and all.

    • TheWrongStuff

I saw a documentary several years ago about a man who required his son’s to learn Mandarin because it was only a matter of time before the Chinese took over America and he wanted to make sure that they would be good servants to their new masters. Your outlook is slightly doucheier. Long winded hyperbole does not translate very well on this site and it makes you sound…well, douchey…sorry, I don’t have the same encyclopedia fucking cry baby that you are using.

What this shows me is, much like all the other drum thumping, over hyped bullshit coming out of the media in regards to the sleeping dragon…is it time to go back to bed yet?..is that they are a paper tiger and if they, for so much as a single moment, contemplated moving their massive pussy fucking army across the Pacific, they would be obliterated wholesale before they saw Midway.

Give off with your defeatist bullshit and lay off the pipe you fucking hippy.

Lastly, this is an actual fact btw, China has 6% of the worlds arable farm land and a little more than 1/5 the world’s population; is currently surrounded by 6 countries w/ nuclear bombs, 4 of which don’t want China in charge of shit anymore that I want to read through another pretentious boring epic of self serving drivel, aka your boring ass post. I live in the Central Valley in CA. That, if you didn’t know, is where your food actually comes from. Let’s see how much gold they can choke down and just quit sending them food….mmmm yummy, taste that mineral content.

Move the fuck to China loser and get the fuck out of the way of people who still believe that hard work and determination are America’s only true nation resource.

      • Scanx0

Babe, China owns your country. If you truly believe that ‘hard work and determination are America’s only true nation resource’ then your fucked ‘cos there are more of them and they work much harder for less. All those millions and millions of minimum waged workers who work 12 hour days seven days a week and have no time to consume, save their money in the bank and the bank leant it to George W and he spent it knocking the shit out of Iraq.

I mean China LITERALLY owns the USA. They don’t need an army. That twonk Bush sold you to them. Google it – USA debt China.

    • BP

I hear you and understand well the point you are making. China has a different way of getting places that upsets those that do not truly understand or try to understand the methodology.

Westerners ( of which I am one ) are sedated in the belief that they have a high standard of living that includes true democracy, choice, freedoms, safety, ethics, and the most sophisticated of social services. All of which we emphatically fail on.

There are different forces at play for a country of 1.3 billion…and a different way of handling such a monstrous population. And a different lense really is required to properly analyze it. There are more sensibilities in China than one gives them credit for. I travel there often…have investments there…and have developed a tolerance, love for the people, and a more balanced perspective on their role in our planet.

The West has truly damaged our planet….possibly irreparably. China ( and the rest of Asia ) may be the only region that can truly save it. And we must look to integrate our viewpoints beyond commercial interest. Intellectual bridging must happen. Peace.

China is a growing country in that it is looking out for itself in 10 years.. What about in 50 years when it has no sustainable resources itself? This land that they are using to build these cities that are not being used at this time could easily be planted into forrests that support life other then just humans. Coming from central Canada where there is alot of diverse land and our resources are being sent over to China to be turned into malls that are empty except shops with toys in it. Maybe that man that is running that shop likes toys but dont you think he enjoys being outside as well? Get some of these people to take a step back and see that it doesnt benefit you in the long run to be a slave to money and property. Good well being and health is more important for all life forms and earth. Maybe we do need a world crash in economy to put everyone back on their asses where they came from and more rational decisions will be made.

Isn’t there something about supply and demand that has to work here? If there is no demand for those places isn’t it inevitable that prices will be lowered? That the lost income will be more costly than initially having lower prices? Does this mean that China has not learned how poorly real estate speculation has worked in the US? Demand isn’t strong if people don’t have jobs, and if the US continues to have a poor economy China isn’t going to have strong future.

Nato, UN command. I wan not a civilian at the time. I was not special forces, I was a guy with a gun and limited authority wearing plain clothes. I didn’t get a damn thing done because it kept getting covered up. Host nations have major influence over how their “allies” report the truth. NO, Im not Captain America, Im a fucking failure and people still suffer for it. Im out.

You are a good man. Forgive yourself and move on….

Peace.

I’ve no grudge against you, I’ve done my time on the front lines and learned that nobody has the patent on corruption cruelty, and viciousness, nothing i did made a difference because the people I fought for were just as bad as the people I fought. labeling one people evil and another good will just make you crazy in the end.

you think you ever had a chance to help those people? if you don’t let go you are going to end up like some old friends of mine.

If they wanted to reclaim their commie cred, they’d start putting some of the impoverished Chinese who’d been rioting in protest of things like their homes getting bulldozed for such “improvements” into these new apartments at radically reduced rates, and give them jobs in the now empty shops. Then these people would actually start spending money, and the whole thing might actually become real.

Let me add to that last comment that there’s a truly great article about this by Naomi Klein that was originally written for Rolling Stone here:

    http://www.naomiklein.org/articles/2008/05/chinas-all-seeing-eye

“Every rural village that is successfully razed to make way for a new project creates more displaced people who join the ranks of the roughly 130 million migrants roaming the country looking for work. By 2025, it is projected that this “floating” population will swell to more than 350 million. ”

My favorite part about that is the following quote:

“Remember how we’ve always been told that free markets and free people go hand in hand? That was a lie. It turns out that the most efficient delivery system for capitalism is actually a communist-style police state, fortressed with American “homeland security” technologies, pumped up with “war on terror” rhetoric.

And the global corporations currently earning superprofits from this social experiment are unlikely to be content if the lucrative new market remains confined to cities such as Shenzhen. Like everything else assembled in China with American parts, Police State 2.0 is ready for export to a neighborhood near you.”

What I find fascinating is how not at all OUR media reported on the 87,000 “mass incidents” in China in 2005 alone), including things like 20,000 people taking to the streets over raised bus fares and setting police cars on fire.

Why wouldn’t they report on that?

Oh, because those are anti-capitalist protests. Not anti-communist protests.

Doesn’t fit the narrative they’ve constructed about what is good and what is evil. Therefore, it adds complexity to the discussion. One might have to try to point out that things aren’t black and white, but instead are very gray.

And the corporate hack media not only don’ts like stories that show that capitalism has a serious downside, they REALLY don’t like complexity.

That sort of thing means they have to do actual investigating and real writing to make that complexity clear to the public, instead of simply worrying about their hairdos and talking about celebrity gossip, which is SOOOOO much easier…..

Yeah and Korea still believes in the phenomena known as “Fan Death”. There are several news reports on it every year, despite it being complete and utter bullshit.

It is weird as fuck to hear ex-soldiers talking to each other. Not exactly on-topic, I know, but it still weird to see conversations involving a world most of us have absolutely no knowledge of

it’s sad in a way, two guys I served with committed suicide because they couldn’t let go of things that happened, they probably went home and didn’t have anyone to talk to about it.

  • Paul Panza (who are you)

It’s would be nice if the Chinese would let the Japanese tsunami victims move there. Japan will be loosing their cities as fast as China can build them. The future super disasters will also provide a need for adequate housing for the planets refugees. And maybe a spot or two for homeless US citizens. Does communism have a heart or is communist a country like China just another Nazi front like Russia and the USA?

China is what is happening to the US. To fill malls etc., you need a middle class. When the average worker can barely afford food he is not going to spend much time in a mall or buying much of anything other than food. The US has an additional problem in that for years the middle class and small businesses supported the country, because the poor have no money to pay taxes, and the upper class pays little or no income tax. Now that the US has destroyed most of its small businesses, and lowered the income of the lower class, by killing unions etc., there is no one to pay taxes. This means that to survive a country needs to find other ways to get income. One major income is weapons, as long as we can keep countries fighting each other and buying our weapons. But the US trend is to be more like China, the Philippines, Mexico, and other countries with a large gap from the rich to the poor. This eventually will kill malls in the US and have enormous property vacancies.

  • Harpsichord

Like we are ever going to honestly pay them back. You can go to China too you goddamn pussy.

  • Giggle Butterknife

I can’t tell if you’re serious. If you are serious then you need a quick boost back to reality if you think the largest police state and biggest polluter is anything we need to adobt to then you are a complete idiot who needs to get out of the commie utopia pipedream you are stuck on. If you aren’t serious then xin is good with him.
