Jury Awards $82,000 To Oregon Woman Arrested For Asking Police for a Business Card

Shei'Meka NewmannAimee Green writes in the Oregonian:

A Multnomah County jury awarded a 33-year-old woman $82,000 Thursday, saying they wanted to send Portland police a message: Hand over a business card the next time a citizen asks for one.

Several jurors who spoke to The Oregonian after the verdict in Multnomah County Circuit Court said police weren’t dealing with an urgent or dangerous situation on the evening of Feb. 13, 2009 — when Shei’Meka Newmann questioned what she thought was an unnecessarily rough arrest of a fellow MAX rider. It would have taken only a few seconds for an officer to hand Newmann a card, jurors said.

“I think that police need to be reminded that it’s part of their job to de-escalate and defuse situations,” said juror Chris Bolles. Instead, jurors say police overreacted to Newmann’s queries.

The fine itself is a good thing. Hells yeah – teach the cops a lesson. But Shei’Meka Newmann should not be the recipient of the funds. The proceeds from the fine should go to a community area resource such as a homeless shelter or a food bank. The only thing Shei’Meka Newmann should be due is reimbursement for any court or legal costs she may have incurred and not a dime more.

so people who weren’t involved are due the money when the victim isn’t?

Ok, my bad – so I had only read the part of the story that appears here on disinfo, not the entire story at the Oregonian. My bad. She deserves some amount of compensation. Maybe not $82K though.

You mean, this is why the police did this to her?

          • justagirl April 23, 2011 at 7:31 pm #

no. i mean it’s why she got the money.

          • wow April 23, 2011 at 7:42 pm #

she didn’t just ‘get’ the money. i’m sure she had spend that time in jail after the arrest, post bond, go to court afterwards, etc. what a waste of time for everybody involved, not to mention traumatizing and infuriating. i’m sure she had to hire an attorney and go through a trial like any other victim and had to think about it every day in between. what a stress. the fact that you think that this was somehow easy for her is insulting and offensive. god knows how much crap like this happens and goes unreported and these officers would have gotten away with it. i’m glad she did what she did. we need more people like her. it was as if they arrested her because it seemed as though she was questioning their authority, pretty messed up when we punish someone for speaking up for another citizen being roughed up by the police. god bless her.

yeah. police bruitality is infuriating. it doesn’t sound like she got roughed up too badly though. i hope she spent all the money on herself.

Most of that is probably going to cover court and legal fees.

Sounds typical of Portland cops. I’m not surprised. Their not exactly the nicest there toward African Americans.

I wonder what happened to her kid while she was under arrest. If the child was at daycare and she had no way to contact anyone to go pick her kid up that the daycare was authorized to release the child to… well… 82k may not even have covered her legal and personal costs in the incident when you add in dealing with child services… I’m glad to see that a few of the other cops testified truthfully instead of closing ranks. Sometimes I wonder if there even _are_ any good cops anymore, and I guess this shows there’s still a few.
