Scottish Schoolchildren Hit By Rain Of Worms

earth-wormsA bizarre incident in Scotland as a school briefly was trapped beneath deluge of worms falling from the sky. The Scotsman reports:

A PE class had to run for cover as it started raining worms.
Teacher David Crichton was leading a group of pupils playing football at Galashiels Academy when dozens of the invertebrates began plummeting from the sky. The 22 second-year boys had to abandon their lesson.

Mr. Crichton said the children had just completed their warm-up when they began to hear “soft thudding” on the ground. The class then looked to the cloudless sky – and saw worms falling on to them.

The teacher scooped up handfuls of the worms that had fallen from the sky as proof they had landed on his class. Mr. Crichton said he and his colleagues eventually found about 120 worms after checking the artificial football pitch and tennis courts.

Showers of worms falling from the heavens have been reported in the past. Similar events were recorded in 1872 in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1877 in Christiana, Norway, and in 1924 in Halmstad, Sweden. In July 2007 a woman was crossing a road in Louisiana when large clumps of tangled worms dropped from above.

The incident in Galashiels is believed to have been caused by freak weather over a nearby river lifting water and worms and dumping it over the road.

Any theories? Mine would be some kind of gas build up underground possibly related to the worms and then the pressure eventually ejects large parts of earth into the air.

    • Cap’n Crusty

I think that happened to me last time I had ten-alarm chili. Honestly, I thought it was vegetarian.

        reality check… 21st century, god/jesus = fiction… evolution = fact

          Or maybe alien-assisted evolution…

If *we* as humans have acquired the ability to manipulate DNA, then aliens (if they’re out there/or here/or were here long ago) most certainly can too.

Weather lifting river water, sorting it out to leave behind all the rocks, fish, bugs, leaches, pieces of plant? For real?

Love these Fortean events :-) Just too weird and random…of course…if we had a perfect explanation…it wouldn’t be Fortean, unusual, or weird anymore. I like these little mysteries just the way they are…mysterious :-)

Charles Fort wrote an excellent and frightening book about these events. ” Book of The Damned”.
Please don’t read this book no matter how dark and Gothic the title sounds. Go back to your intelligence building games like Mortal Combat 9, Besides reading is no fun because it requires effort and paying attention! Your friends will mock you and you’ll become a freak.

A flock of birds dropped them from overhead. birds eat worms + birds fly together in large numbers + birds hold things in their mouth without swallowing them sometimes + etc.. Simple explanation.

Events like these aren’t always accurately reported. Sometimes when you dig deeper you find that people are witnessing an unusual swarm of critters on the ground after/during a hard rain, and inferring that they must have feel from the sky. It’s easy to imagine schoolchildren letting their imaginations run away with them–the article doesn’t cite anyone else witnessing this other than this one PE class.

I’m not saying that that’s definitely what happened, but it’s as plausible an explanation as any.

The article explains not only children witnessed the event, but teachers as well. It also depicts children running for cover and the worms making a sound as they hit the ground. I’m sure there’s a plausible and explainable reason for this mysterious event. However, I don’t think a bunch of overactive imaginations would’ve made headlines.
