Newark’s Prayer-Based Crime Fighting Effort Isn’t Working (Video)

Expanding the effort to the state of California? Well in the words of Brian Wilson: I wish they all could be California/I wish they all could be California/I wish they all could be California … Bruce Wilson writes on Talk To Action:

A radical notion: who needs cops? Just pray down crime. But in Newark, where the murder rate has risen over 70% from 2010 to 2011, the approach doesn’t seem to be working very well.

Privatizing government services has long been a key goal of the American religious right, and as a 2-part new Talk To Action report details (here and here), the push for education vouchers has been orchestrated by right wing funders dedicated to eradicating public schools altogether. But voucher initiatives are presented as secular. Then, there’s prayer-based crime fighting, an even more radical privatization scheme:

I didn’t actually watch the video or read the article, but for some reason this reminds me of The Onion’s Faith Based TV Repairshop bit.

So after seeing the comedy statistics in the video (that of course fail to mention the recent decline, as per the article) I had a quick look at the Newark Wiki page. It’s definitely not the government-run massive urban-revitalisation project that coincidentally was taking place at the same time as this prayer project, or the $100m donated by Facebook into their education fund. No. It was the prayer.

Well, according to people who like to take credit for good things by claiming “Oh, I prayed for it and it happened!” both those things wouldn’t have happened if a few fanatics hadn’t gotten on their knees and did what let them feel powerful and responsible without doing a damn thing that was actually useful: pray. So where rational people look at it and recognize what you’re saying, to fanatics what you’re pointing out is actually vindication in their twisted little minds.

Bah, I hit post before finishing my comment.

I wanted to add: Think how much better the city would have been even beyond the effects of the urban revitalization and increased education money if every person who wasted their time praying for the street they adopted had instead spent just as much time taking responsibility for cleaning up that street, both in literal terms (repainting, repairing, gardening, picking up litter) and in human terms (helping the homeless on their street get off the street, working with the youth on their street directly to help keep them out of gangs, getting to know neighbors to help people get out of abusive relationships and force the abuser off their street, to drive the drug dealers off their adopted street…)

You want to see massive improvements in urban areas? _That_ is how. Prayer is just time you could have spent doing something useful.
