people look at you blankly when you say that spontneous self-organisation is common in the world but there is…before your very eyes

Not exactly “spontaneous self-organisation ” since all the conditions were controlled. The length of each rope is the most significant element of control here -that, and also they were set to swing simultaneously.

It illustrates certain concepts of wave theory and is of course no less beautiful when technically explained.

  9. Very nice!
“spontneous self-organisation” i dare not call it.. you only see the paterns that you can preceive with your brain, to complex paterns your brain does not reconize as a pattern but as chaos. but none the less there could be a pattern

That’s not what we are seeing (self-organization). It’s just physics, dictated by the differing lengths of the strings. Just because patterns form doesn’t mean the swinging is self organizing; the patterns are just incidental.

    • There is a little flash ‘game’ I saw about a year ago (tried to find it) but it displays many similarities to this pendulum. It was a circle with several dots aligned along a radius. The dots orbit at their respective radius and when they return to 0 degrees, they play a note.

But eventually you see spirals form, and chaos, then different numbers of intertwined spirals. eventually coming back to one spiral, and finally all aligned once more.

      Beautiful harmonics in both pieces.

you should put some twinkling (RGB) LED lights underneath that and have yourself a little light show.
