Two Imams in Traditional Dress Removed From Airplane: They Were On Their Way to a Conference on Muslim Prejudice

ImansVia CNN:

An airline is investigating the removal of two imams from a flight headed to North Carolina, ostensibly because passengers felt uncomfortable with their presence of the pair — both clad in Islamic attire.

The incident occurred Friday on an Atlantic Southeast Airlines flight from Tennessee to North Carolina and it involved Masudur Rahman and Mohamed Zaghloul were wearing traditional Muslim dress, CNN affiliate WCNC reported.

The two — who hold high religious positions in the Muslim community — were headed to North Carolina for a conference on prejudice against Muslims, or Islamaphobia. The meeting is sponsored by the North American Imams Federation.

Rahman, who is a professor at the University of Memphis, told the affiliate that the incident reminded him of the prejudice Rosa Parks faced during the civil rights movement.

As I’ve said before, people are being taught fear, not security. This is to be expected. TSA promotes the idea that “anyone” could be a threat, not just people who act like a threat, and the people will absorb this and paint innocent individuals as “threatening.” It could be anyone, so it might as well be those people that we’re uncomfortable with.

I live in TN and this goes to show you that the south is still deeply routed in backwards thinking. They call this area the Bible Belt for a reason and this goes to show you how our religious doctrines hamper thinking in general. There are studies that link religious belief to neurosis; whether those studies are absolutely true is questionable but I think we can all agree that most religious people are still holding on to primitive ideas.

@scatzz – spoken like a true brainwashed bible thumper. Organized religion gets the blame for most murders in history for a reason. Neither Christian nor Muslim is any less guilty. God says we must go to war with those people because they don’t believe as we do and refuse to abandon their beliefs for ours. It’s been this way for over a thousand years and neither side seems to smarten up. Neither God nor Allah, if you believe, want us murdering each other, but some people refuse to see that. Why can’t we all just get along?

    • Tech58

      Atheism, fuck yeah!

    • Tuna Ghost

Any chance of you linking to these studies that link religious belief with neurosis? I’m sure you’re not just repeating things you’ve heard on the internet, but I’d like to see them regardless.

      • Voidthought

I don’t think in all cases a person who is religious will suffer from a mental illness; anyones lifestyle will determine their neurological pathology. I guess I have a bias towards religion because I live so close to the heart of it. I recently took a trip to CO and I was amazed that there were far less churches and we drove all over, north and south CO. You can’t really discount religions influence on mine or anyone elses behavior considering it is apart of everyone’s(Western man) ancestoral psychological background, but I think it’s time to move on to a higher form of religiosity or get rid of it all together, that’s all. There are certain themes in religion that we still need but again, we need to move on from the past motives of these ancient religions. I was more talking out my ass saying that religion links to neurosis but I’m sure you can find studies that show some kind of link but then again you could easily put non-religious people in that link too.

        • Tuna Ghost

Well, kudos for admitting you were talking out your ass. I agree with many of your points, but your post shares a weakness with the million other posts explaining why “we” (America? The world? White mainstream christians?) must move on, namely that there are no suggestions regarding how to do so.

          • Voidthought

As far as suggestions go, I’m still discovering the problem and not really looking for any solutions just yet. Plus, there have been countless others who have been showing us new suggestions in the form of art, film, games, literature, etc but all fail to get across to the majority of the people. I guess you and I, for this situation, can define “we” as anyone exerting influence, direct or indirect, upon any system that affects others. I think that’s a safe definition.
I do believe we will always need mystery though, which is partially invested in religion and life in general, because it allows for the imagination to flourish. I think religion was invented to help deal with the unconscious elements of mind, just as in older times mythology was the dominating spiritual guide and who knows before that. We are entering a new era of conscious awareness, of our environment, of each other, of the world and repeating tired old patterns is insanity. Let me know what you think.

      • quartz99

        Well actually…

Not linking religion to neurosis, but these are two relevant articles posted here on disinfo in the past. The second one is about political views but considering types of religious fervor seem to fall squarely along party lines these days, I think it’s still relevant:

It’s my thinking that any and all terrorists will have an easy time being a terrorists when they know that as long as they don’t dress like imans and making sure to be perfectly polite, they will have no problem blowing themselves up along with whatever target they want to. as i heard this story, it was the PILOT who refused to fly, not the passengers. i guess since the government can change their story every day, so can the airlines. the pilot in question should be fired, and the airline should get sued into bankruptcy.

    • http://www.disinfo.com Disinformation

Thanks for the update, been hearing conflicting stories since this was posted, and agreed that it is messed up either way, will modify headline.

    • 5by5

I agree that the pilot ought to lose his job. His job is to fly, not judge the politics or religious beliefs of others. He’s there to provide a service, and if he can’t provide that service to all, and refrain from discriminating, then he should find another line of work.

I also think that applies to Christian fundamentalist pharmacists who refuse to supply things like Plan B to rape victims (Women who are in such dire circumstances, where they have a limited time to act to prevent that pregnancy, have actually been refused the medication they need – in some cases by the only pharmacist around for miles. For women who are either poor, or in remote communities, this is a particular horror).

You’re a pharmacist. If you can’t do the job because you have a judgement about someone else’s choices, or your own religious convictions, go somewhere else and do something different, because clearly, you’re not cut out for the job.

    • SF2K01

Seems like that’s been happening a lot lately where the pilot gets “worried” over ethnic minorities and decides they’re potential threats, including with a bunch of religious Mexican Jews. Someone needs to send these people to some basic threat assessment training to learn to tell the difference.

Much like the internment of the Japanese in WW2…all of the fear mongering hoopla does nothing to increase security. The only people entrapped in the web are the ones who dare to be honest, be themselves, and live as if they are Americans in a free country. The terrorists have a mission, and will lie, change appearances, adopt new traditions, and evolve to match the environment and still function. No terrorists will be captured, or even stalled, because of crap like this. If anything…this kind of ass ignorant bigotry is their recruitment poster, announcing to the world that extremist mullahs and imams are correct…America is truly an evil empire dominated by hateful bigots engaged in an aggressive crusade against Islam, against the sovereignty of other nations, and against all human beings who do not share arch conservative Evangelical Protestantism as a faith. If the sane and rational and decent people of this country don’t stand up and fire pilots like these…no forward progress of any kind will ever be possible. Our permissiveness when it comes to borderline psychotics and their paranoid, rage fueled fantasies is crippling us as a people and as a nation.

So lets get some things straight, as a Muslim I get blindsided by all these claims I HEAR about Islam. Well these things about 70 some virgins, having as many wifes as you want, beating women, “Jihad”, suicide bombing, and theres a Muslim around every corner and on every block ready to steal your stuff is just insane. Heck I hear things that make me do the “WTF” face. All these people freaking about “Sharia law” need to know that those laws can only be applied in a Muslim dominated country. America is secular…Opps I mean “secular”. And not once have I EVER seen anyone SHOW me where this is in the Quran about all these things they claim that makes Islam evil. Everything is taken out of context and twisted and to make it funny I can point in the Bible the exact things you accuse Muslims of. In my life I have never have been told kill my self because that will land me in hell. I dont or I have never seem a Muslim hit a women for any reason, I dont wanna blow my self up because Im not getting 70 ish virgins for it (though if it was true, Im sure the rest of the Muslim population would be smithereens right now [Sorry for the crappy pun]), I cringe when I see abused women, I freaking LOVE blue jeans and tshirt (all day, everyday) and so on.

I live very peacefully and really my religion doesnt get in the way of my daily life, and I doubt my beliefs have forced me to stop somebody else from doing anything they want to do. If I dont like it I leave or deal with it because im not the police of the world handing out “bad cookie” citations to bad people. Im tired of the MEDIA creating this Image that a big Islam went crashing into the twin towers. I saw that too and felt like I had been attacked as an AMERICAN (dont forget Muslims died in that attack as well, may ALL those killed in 9/11 R.I.P.). So please stop the crap, I wanna live my life like a boss and bother no one. Get it right people, some group of ignorant nuts decided to screw the rest of the Muslim people by what they did and Im not paying for it, let those nuts pay.

And besides doesnt history repeat itself? Holocaust, Camps for Japanese in the USA, Slavery of African Americas, the removal of Native American Indians, and now are Muslims next? I want to be in the history books as the time America said “Nope, we dont believe these lies” and stomps it foot on these liars.

Sadly the ignorant nuts in the religious right decided to screw the rest of the American people by being fucking crazy and destroying our relationship with the rest of the world and by using “divide and conquer” and discrimination-fueled hatred to keep their power. Rather like the ignorant nuts claiming to be the voice of Islam. And for that, the whole world pays, both inside the US and out. We’ve seen these tactics before in history because they work so well and I’m sure we’ll see them again if we survive this incarnation of them. Doesn’t say much for the species as a whole that so many people go along with it out of fear or ignorance.

But hey, can I have some of those “bad cookie” citations to hand out to bad people? I can think of quite a few people in need of being fined for sheer asshattery.

And like Ben Franklin said about all these Americans thinking that giving up their freedoms and rights is for better security is bogus! Tell me how many potential terrorist have we caught? And what about tapping everyones phone lines? The TSA can molest anyone under the claim ANYONE could be a terrorist. I just wish people would pick up a translation of the Quran just once when TV make these claims to see if it really is there. Never will they give you the source of their BS.

I also have to say that, though im not supposed to talk ill of the dead and nor did i know those people, but what those terrorist did was not right. They did a direct violation of their own belief whether it was intentional or not doesnt matter. Muslims are not to attack another country UNTIL they are attacked first. Other then that YOU cannot have a Jihad. All war sucks for all people. Although I have trouble believing that Muslims really did this.

Anyway, I just wish people would stop being stupid and learn their own religion and then at least understand others. Of all my years living here, I have never been bothered by Christian, Jewish, Atheist, or whoevers views or activities, they do their thing I do mine. But now we cant even celebrate Eid the holiday of Muslims without fear of being attacked by our own fellow Americans, we cant even get on a plane with us feeling like everyone is watching us, and how can Muslims feel safe about sending their kids to public schools when teachers and other students will tease and harass them non-stop. No amount of care is going to fix that. I know first had how bullying is in this school. Its one thing to be made fun of for wearing glasses, or being fat. But when you bring in racism and hatred because of ethnicity and dont do anything about it, then that is the first step to creating a hostile world at a young age, not to mention what young Muslim children will suffer. Its really annoying and stupid.
