Is the restriction of pornography to inmates because of the lack of literary diversity offered in prisons or because of a possible porn/violence connection? ABC reports:

The American Civil Liberties Union is pushing for porn at a detention center in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

The move came after reports surfaced that the facility only allowed inmates to read the Bible. But prison officials said that isn’t true and inmates have a wide variety of reading material at their disposal.

The ACLU said it wants prisoners to be able to read and view pornography. Lawyers for the jail said that just won’t happen.

“If they don’t like the wording in some of our policies, we’ll be happy to try and create better wording for them. But, there are certain issues that we’re just not going to be able to bend on,” said Sandra J. Senn, an attorney for the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Berkeley County.

Officials believe porn will lead to more assaults and create a hostile environment.

A preliminary hearing on the matter is set to take place next month.

  1. Officials “believe” porn will lead to more assaults.

So, this is just a gut feeling they have. They can’t back it up with objective, conclusive data.

This is just a “because I feel like it” regulation.

You know what actual research has shown? That pornography actually calms down aggressive people. The very reason these people become more aggressive because it’s being taken away from them.

I don’t disagree with you, but since you mention it what is that ‘actual research’ to which you refer?

      • Love how people who miss legitimate stories/studies/facts are always lazily demanding sources…while on the internet. I think we should invent a new subclass of “troll” for it. The “cite your sources” rule doesn’t apply to the internet….because it’s the internet.

So scientific articles on the internet, for example,  don’t need referenced sources because, you know man, it’s on the internet, like whatever dude. Things, Phen, are and can be what you make them.

sounds more like a hotel to me… air conditioning, free meals, multiple t.v.s, and now, porn. so they can’t smoke, but they can make hooch. (seen it) prisons sounding better all the time, or at least like the outside. or MAYBE the outside is beginning to resemble the prison… you decide… (none are more hopelessly enslaved than those who BELIEVE they are free)

    • That’s practically how it is some places, even more so in Scandinavian countries where prison is literally camping out on an island with all your needs taken care of for you. There’s prisoners rights and then there’s treating your prisoners better than your poor or even your average citizen.

  5. While I don’t have a specific problem with prisoners having porn.  I don’t feel sorry for them not having it either.  Also who is going to provide porn?  Us interenet users forget that porn isn’t cheap, at least not in any physical format.

They’re like priests, their only sexual outlet is rape or violence

I dunno, maybe it’ll cut down on the man rape. Maybe not.
