New Apple Technology Stops iPhones From Filming Live Events

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Fans at concerts and sports games may soon be stopped from using their iPhones to film the action —as a result of new technology being considered by Apple, The Times of London reported Thursday.

The California company has plans to build a system that will sense when a person is trying to film a live event using a cell phone and automatically switch off their camera.

A patent application filed by Apple, and obtained by the Times, reveals how the software would work. If a person were to hold up their iPhone, the device would trigger the attention of infra-red sensors installed at the venue. These sensors would then instruct the iPhone to disable its camera.

Apple declined to comment.

    If they can’t be taught manners and class, we’ll just have to build it into the tech.  Not sure why the Mac Fans are so angry- I’m sure they’ll make an exception for rainbow pride events, so they should hardly feel the pinch.

    As if you can really see the detail on the field anyway. You go to a live event for the whole experience, the people around you are part of it too not just the stars begging for attention, next time try to make like minded friends and then you will have a complete arena experience, thats what a forum is for anyway. You seem to have shitty manners, people want their memories.  You should be complaining to the venue owners for not installing tvs on every seat so you can actually watch the event you are at. sports and concerts are better on tv anyway, for several reasons the main one is the replays and player stats and such and having your family around you. I hope apple prevents people from calling you.  And mac fans are not angry, they love everything apple does, everyone else is angry at apple, they set a bad example for the other companies who are into freedom.

    Remember folks! You NEED a product that decides for you whether you should be doing something or not :-)

    Frankly…I didn’t need another reason to despise and ignore Apple…but I guess they threw me a free bone here. One more reason won’t hurt at this point.

    Yep, it’s no different than the DVD unskippable feature control. It was created so you couldn’t skip the FBI warning, then companies started using it so now I have to watch the damn commercials for 5 year old movies every damn time I load the DVD.

    You go for the EXPERIENCE not for the chance to replicate it to watch yourself filming the experience over and over.

    Its really strange how a hoarding mentality has branched over into peoples experience rather than just stuff. When did memories become commodities, and enter the realm of “stuff”….

    Well DroolBoss, my manners may be bad, but not so bad that I’m inclined to wave my camera-phone in the air at every ball-game, concert or graduation event.  You want your memories, so try paying attention to what’s going on around you at the time instead of fiddling with your damn phones and other vibrating pocket devices.  

    If I want to watch a ball game or concert on TV I wouldn’t be there anyway, now would I?  What kind of doofus thinks that concerts and ballgames are better on tv.  Get a pair of glasses so you can see the action.

    And as for apple preventing its customers from calling me, that’s a great idea.  And btw have you seen the Iphone4?  pretty awesome, you should buy one.

    If staring at your phone, and blocking others’ view of interesting events that your’re watching on TV is your idea of freedom, then I’ll take slavery, I guess.

    You have some sweet footage of cops behaving badly; snapped a photo/video, lets say.  It syncs to the cloud after you snap it, hence you don’t have to hide your SIM card in your anus.  It is stored with GPS coordinates embedded in the metadata of the photo/video.  The right government agency can then contact Apple to remove all information stored on the cloud with said coordinates and date in metadata.

    You never have to see the truth again!

    Yeah, this will be really convenient when people start revolting and rioting and cannot upload their videos of these “live events” to YouTube and Twitter.  Sounds like it’s more than just what’s on the surface, as per usual.   You would have to be a complete moron to believe they hold technology to block live video at specific times and places and they are going to use it responsibly somehow.. and better yet, to think this somehow benefits you?  ha ha ha ha ha Wake up, people.

    good fuckin point.. i never thought about all the negative things that could result from this technology. I was looking @ it from a business point-of-view…. Being that artist and record labels are losing money when their concerts are uploaded on youtube before the concert is even over. By the time they try and release their professional footage, people have already seen it a 1000 times.

    depends on your seats… 80% of the time sport events are better on TV. You dont have to worry about transportation, gas, getting there early, paying for crazy expensive food, dumbass people in your section, etc. Its good 2 get out but if scorching heat, Rain, or snow forecasted… IM NOT GOING! Invite a few friends over make them ea bring a 6 pack n some bitches!

    umm you pay for professional footage for the quality of the recording not for the content itself, repaying the production companies for the equipment they invested on and propah technique to bring better quality on something already seen as it is a recording. Intellectual property is becoming free to everyone. Plus recording companies can suck it, artists get paid squat. Wealth without labor is a big problem.

    It is better on tv if you are actually into the artist and seeing a detailed performance. But a gathering is a good place to meet people to bring back home or to make future plans to get together. Thus people tolerate becoming ants for a chance to meet someone they can relate to at least when it comes to musical taste. But it is not comfortable. Front roll is sweet tho

    Have you ever seen a cell phone recording of an event on Youtube? Half the time you can’t even hear the music, and the footage is so blurry and tiny (not to mention the camera is never still) that it’s not even worth watching. Cell phone recordings are not a threat to sales of professionally filmed concert footage.

    There is *no* positive to a company artificially crippling a $600 phone. I’m the customer, not the artist’s record label. I’ve been an iPhone customer since the beginning, but if this gets implemented, I’m switching to an Android.

    Me personally, i would never buy a dvd of my favorite bands concert… No matter how professional it looked! But its simple as this…. If you downloaded a movie (CAM/TS) and you watched it in its entirety… are u really gonna say i wanna go to the movies and watch it again???? Nah… unless u have a chick that really wants 2 watch that movie… n there is a 50% probability your gonna get your dick massaged while watching it.

    I’m the worlds biggest Apple fan, I’m a stockholder, and I’v owned Apple products since the Apple IIe and I would never own one again if the do implement this technology. Phone cameras have caught much misconduct by police and have reported the truth to the world in revolutions and democratic uprisings.I’m running out of patience with Apple for trying to be my censor, force me to obey copyright laws I would never think of breaking and copying music I bought and paid for. But this goes too far.
