Young Children In South Africa Eaten By Giant Rats

article-1393836-0C62598500000578-803_468x286A chilling urban legend from New York City comes terribly true on the opposite side of the globe, as three-foot rats run amok, feasting on human babies. The Daily Mail writes:

Giant rats as big as cats have killed and eaten two babies in separate attacks in South Africa’s squalid townships this week.

Lunathi Dwadwa, three, was killed as she slept in her parent’s shack outside Cape Town and another girl was killed in Soweto township near Johannesburg the same day. Bukiswa Dwadwa, 27, said: ‘I can’t forget how ugly my child looked after her eyes were ripped out. ‘She was eaten from her eyebrows to her cheeks, her other eye was hanging by a piece of flesh.’

Residents of South Africa’s impoverished townships say the giant rats grow up to three-foot long, including their tails, and have front teeth over an inch long. The suspects in the baby attacks are believed to be African Giant Pouched Rats, the biggest in the world. They are nocturnal, omnivorous and can produce up to 50 young a year. Some tribal people breed them for food.

The deaths appear to be part of a spate of deadly rat attacks in the country. Last month, 77-year-old grandmother Nomathemba Joyi died after giant rats chewed off the right side of her face.

    • Normally I would find a statement like that abhorrent but in this situation… that’s actually not a bad idea. Not a dog cage per se but something with a door the kids can open on their own that’s big enough to put a bed in but made of something the rats can’t get through. It’s like mosquito netting… but metal and made for giant rats…

Unfortunately, if a rat can get his nose/head into a space, his entire body can fit too.  Mice are the same way.  A standard sized mouse can squeeze through a hole the diameter of a pencil.  Unless the are constructing cages out of fine metal screen, the rats can still get in and the kids cannot escape.  Plus, rats can chew through metal in a surprisingly short amount of time…  The whole thing is awful!

Are they putting their kids in giant mousetraps for beds? Maybe they should give that a shot.

Truly they must live a life of misery, one of the worlds highest murder rates, highest rate of rape in the world and now giant flesh eating rats. No wonder I know so many ex-patriot south Africans.

Am I the only one wondering why nobody heard these people screaming/crying as they got eaten? Shouldn’t they have been making noise that would have attracted help? The 3 year old was in her parent’s shack, were they not there? How does a kid get eaten alive by rats and no one notices?

Article never said they were eaten alive, just that they were eaten. Babies and old people sometimes die unexpectedly, and rats like eating things.

This rat does not grow to 3 feet.  Naturally.  It is possible that the “domesticated” animals are being overfed like the “hogzillas” in Texarcana.

More likely the Daily Fail is over-exaggerating shit again.  They are the Daily News-type tabloid paper of the UK.  These are possibly attacks in impoverished areas by different predators with the rats scavenging the dead.  Instead of focusing on the class and race divide they sensationalize something else to ignore important issues. Then again the US mainstream media (and that of many countries) is also guilty of this.

While I agree the Daily Mail is a complete joke. The Wikipedia article does state they can grow to 3 feet including tail, as the article says. Wikipedia- “Their head and body length ranges from 25–45 cm (9–18 in) with scaly tails ranging from 36–46 cm (14–18 in).”

If you could add, 18 inches + 18 inches is 3 feet.
