Facebook Bans Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ Album Cover

NevermindUpdate: Even though several news outlets are reporting this, the album cover is still on Nirvana’s Facebook Page. I’m not sure if this smells like censorship or publicity stunt right now …

Looks like they haven’t managed to get completely get rid of it. Hard to believe this story is real. Lauren Schutte reports in the Hollywood Reporter via MSNBC:

Twenty years later, Nirvana is still managing to cause controversy.

The band, whose Nevermind album made waves when it was released in 1991 because of its cover art which featured a naked baby boy floating in a pool, has run into censorship yet again, this time on its Facebook page.

After product shots of the album (which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this fall) were uploaded to Nirvana’s Facebook page, the social networking company removed the photo citing a violation of its Terms of Use.

“Facebook does not allow photos that attack an individual or group, or that contain nudity, drug use, violence or other violations of the Terms of Use,” the notice read.

It’s not as if we’re all born that way! Or exist that way as a normal state of being! I was born in full conservative business attire and so should everyone else!

  4. Spencer Elden who is now also 20-years-old has no problem with the revealing shot, “Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis. So that’s kinda cool,” he’s said.

Freedom of Expression is never meant to allow Dogma to force free humanity to hide the fact we all have Genitals. It’s intended to protect ones right to their identity (sexual or otherwise) safely and in the open. Freedom of Religion on the other hand allows people to label an Art-Piece that includes an open, celebratory image of a naked child as Pornography and mutilate a child’s Genitals in private. Freedom is not expressed when freedom of Religion subjugates freedoms of expression that include the right to sexuality freedom under the guise of religious freedom. The Album Cover is and only ever will be tasteful Art-Form, that in reality is protected under Freedom of Expression as it is ultimately a celebration of innocence and sexuality.

Yeah, I keep saying that people are retarding themselves right into a surveillance/police state with all the social networking stuff.

      • Ignorance like this bugs me so much. The stuff that people post on there is stuff that they want to share. For the most part it’s stuff that if someone asked them in person, they’d be more than happy to share. When I hear people talk like this, I just think, “Oh no, don’t get on FB, the government and corporations are going to find out about all the lame-ass drama in your life!”

Other than that, the censoring of a picture like the album cover or a picture of my son when he was one, playing in the bathtub, which got removed, is pretty lame. I’d probably leave FB, just for being stupid, but that’s how I stay connected with a lot of family and friends in other states.

Yeah I’m sorry but the potential for misuse of all that shit is astronomical.

I see the concern, but really, what information do you see on facebook that has any use for intelligence agencies?

          • Anarchy Pony | Jul 28, 2011 at 1:48 am |

I dunno, but I can’t help but feel dubious about it. It just doesn’t seem like a good idea.

          • tracking cookies….. free marketing/brainwashing to customers, keeps the conformist wheel of capitalism on rollin’.. and if not “intelligence agencies,” who here hasn’t had at least ONE person you don’t want to find you?  Or a stalker?  Or you’re a stalker yourself?  The only reason you would even have a FB is to stalk other people’s status updates and to lie to other people about your life via photos, updates, wall posts, etc… it helps keep people in denial about themselves and it amazes me that they are willing to sign up for it… but of course they would because they think they are benefiting from it. lemmings will be lemmings.

Yeah no, that wasn’t my point.
Way to aim low on the comedy spectrum though.

  16. Apparently someone at Facebook thought this naked baby was totally HOT. You’d have to be a sicko to even be offended by a nude infant in the first place. Find the guy and hook him up to a plethysmograph – odds are he’s getting boners from Huggies ads.

As the great Chomsky said, the 20th/21st Century has seen the rise of three types of totalitarianism: Fascism, Bolshevikism (‘Communism’), and Corporations.
Apple banned James Joyce’s Ulysses recently for ‘pornographic content’. One of the most important novels ever written…….

  27. I guess facebook should also ban some of those anti abortion pages since those dead fetus photos are clearly child pornography.
