‘Jihadi’ Terror Attack In Norway

[Update: This story was posted at a time when some portions of the media were reporting – incorrectly – that these acts were perpetrated by an Islamic group called "Helpers of the Global Jihad."

That was not the case and it's a lesson learned that one should not believe everything one reads on the disinformation website or, indeed, any other news source, including the New York Times, the source of the story. Read as many different sources as you can and then form your own opinion is never bad advice for us or anyone on this planet.]

The big story of the day so far, developing of course via multiple news channels. From the New York Times and CNN (video):

OSLO — Powerful explosions shook central Oslo on Friday afternoon, blowing out the windows of several government buildings, including one housing the office of the Norwegian prime minister. The state television broadcaster, citing the police, said seven people were killed and at least 15 injured; a spokeswoman for the prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, said he was “safe and not hurt.”

Shortly after the explosions, which appeared to be a bomb attack, a man dressed as a police officer opened fire on a summer camp for young members of the ruling Labor Party on the island of Utoya in the Oslo fjord, about 25 miles from the city, and wounded at least five, a Norwegian security official said…

A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. “We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations,” the group said, according to Mr. McCants’ translation, apparently referring to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010. “What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come.” The claim could not be confirmed…

    There has been exactly 0% confirmed evidence that this had anything to do with Jihadis or Al Qaeda or Muslims of any kind and, in fact, the one guy they do have in custody is a white guy. Now, I’m not saying that it’s definitely not linked to any of these groups, but lets not jump to conclusions before we have all the facts straight. Wasn’t “Oslo was Bombed!” sensational enough without tacking on “by those evil MUSLIMS!”?

    Yes, anything that comes with the name “analyst” be from a news network or any gov. organ like CIA, means more of a speculator than an actual meaningful intelligence work. CIA just works with information aquired from torture, gossip, bribery or just plain imagination. And when people find suspect are arrested everyone stay with another question mark wondering if they are indeed guilty of being terrorists.

    Given that the Norwegian government has confirmed that the man arrested for the shooting and believed to be involved in the earlier bombing is a blond, blue-eyed Norwegian, I think you should stop jumping to conclusions.

    This sort of moronic garbage- written before any facts are confirmed and jumping to paranoid conclusions- doesn’t help anyone. It only serves to spread lies, raise tensions and make the author look like an idiot; talking of which [continued at New York Times] links to CNN.

    At least let the Norwegians tend to their injured and dead before spreading scurrilous rumours.

    Norway has had an issue with right-wing extremists for a while. Whether this turns out to be their work remains to be seen.  We’ll have to wait until the police confirm the identity of the man they’ve arrested and see if he has any links to political organisations before talking about motivation otherwise it’s idle speculation and as useful as pissing in the ocean.

    In the meantime our thoughts and sympathies should be with the victims and their families.

    It’s going to be interesting to see the terminology used in the media. The European press is now using the term “Christian fundamentalist”, which is kinda new. Will US media take over that term? It seems unlikely.

    Note that, in contrast to terrorism by Muslims, the terrorism unleashed by Irish Catholics and Protestants was never connected directly to their religion. They are euphemistically called  “Republicans” and “Loyalists”.

    Furthermore, because Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian perpetrator, was not an outsider from another culture, he can’t be designated as “evil”. He is merely a “deranged nutter”. While the label is not exactly an excuse for his act, it is an attempt to make it understandable. Contrast that the corporate media’s approach to Islamic terrorists.
