Universal Flu Vaccine

Any time a new government-endorsed vaccine is suggested for an entire population there are those who will raise suspicions as to motivation. I’m sure this new “one size fits all” flu vaccine will be no different. From USA Today:

A universal flu vaccine that protects against all strains may be within reach in the next five years, replacing annual shots developed for specifics flu viruses, the chief of the National Institutes of Health predicts.

Francis Collins told USA TODAY’s Editorial Board on Tuesday that he is “guardedly optimistic” about development of a long-term shot to replace the one “you’d have to renew every year.”

About 200,000 people are hospitalized with the flu every year, and an estimated 3,000 to 49,000 die, making the flu one of the chief causes of preventable death in the USA.

Collins cited the long-term flu shot in a wide-ranging discussion of many advances coming from NIH research. Amid budget debates now underway in Washington, D.C. that could also trim NIH’s $31billion budget, he made the case for research investments that improve the nation’s health.

A universal flu vaccine “seemed completely out of reach only a few years ago,” Collins said. That’s because flu viruses mutate yearly, causing small changes in surface coatings, which make old vaccines obsolete.

Recently however, scientists have found “there are parts of the viral coat that don’t change …. If you designed a vaccine to go after the constant part of the virus, you’d be protected against all strains,” Collins said.

A universal flu vaccine is “not a question of whether, but when,” says Arnold Monto, of the University of Michigan…

why anyone would defend this is beyond me, but there they are….
vaccines do so much trouble to young patients, or how bout all those swine flu vaccines that just outright killed people to “save” them from the “worry” of getting sick??? I’ve never had a shot for anything since I was a child and I haven’t been sick in years. clean water, REAL food, and mental education (aka a permanent positive attitude) is all you need to keep from needing to get nervous disorders from American “fix-it-all” injections.

I don’t live in big pharma’s propaganda fun times for all sandbox of a country though so we think a little different around here.. more than half of the stuff on the counters in the states is illegal over here… and “medical treatment” isn’t one of the top national killers XD

It’s not like this will lead to even stronger more resilient flu viruses or anything.

Sandy L … don’t Spam the Like Button on every comment that agrees with your presuppositions. I read your one-liner anti-vaccine rhetoric and I doubt you are qualified to tell people to not take vaccinations. This much is 100% True, an Airborne Influenza Virus does not care if you have clean water, sanitation, food, housing and education.

I’m no Doctor, so I DON’T FUCKING GIVE MEDICAL ADVICE ! It’s safe to assume you’re not a Doctor, so you shouldn’t either.

    Great news!

Maybe one day we’ll be able to build a computer big enough to run an accurate simulation of what the early 21st century would have been like without vaccines, particularly flu vaccines.  I’m guessing it would show thousands of more deaths per year.  “Ah ha!  See!  Vaccines are good for you,” would be my response to nay-sayers.  But then, predictably, those nay-sayers would respond, “But who wrote the code?  You can’t trust those people who wrote it; of COURSE it will say vaccines are good — fool, can’t you see they’re working for the pharmaceutical companies!” or maybe “I don’t trust computer simulations.  No simulation will ever account for all the complexities of Mother Nature.  Think of all those millions who died to give you your natural immunity to viruses and bacteria — they can’t account for all of that!”
