Weed Wars: Marijuana Dispensary Reality Show Coming To Discovery Channel

Harborside Health CenterA step towards acceptance? James Hibberd writes in Entertainment Weekly:

Discovery Channel is set to announce a potentially controversial new series: A docu-soap reality show set in the country’s largest medical marijuana distributorship and starring a pot reform activist. This fall, the network will unveil Weed Wars, where cameras follow the day-to-day dealings of a California ganja store.

The show follows Steve DeAngelo, the owner of Oakland’s Harborside Health Center, which serves 80,000 clients. According to the network, DeAngelo strives to provide patients with the highest-quality product and uses his business to promote the national regulation and taxation of cannabis.

“Weed Wars fearlessly pulls back the curtain on a once illegal and still controversial world,” said Nancy Daniels, executive VP at Discovery Channel. “From the inner workings of the business to Steve’s distinctive leadership style, Weed Wars is a fascinating glimpse into this highly unique setting. Like Gold Rush or Deadliest Catch, these are guys pursuing their own version of the American Dream.”

California passed the Compassionate Use Act in 1996 that permitted legalized pot dispensaries where customers can select from a variety of toke-able or edible products if they have a doctor’s approval. Some have accused the Act of essentially legalizing marijuana. But in addition to providing relief to some patients struggling with severe illnesses, the passage has also resulted in a new breed of local-owned brick-and-mortar outlets at a time when retail stores are shutting down as commerce increasingly shifts to big box stores and Internet.

I live an hour North of Oakland, my city has the most relaxed laws on Cannabis in the whole United States! Anything less that an ounce is considered personal use, its decriminalized, subject to confiscation or a small fine if used in public. Then again, people smoke all day long in the park across from the Police Department and the Police don’t even care. Kind of hard to bust a Free Loving Hippie for burning one when your Cop Car is a Prius that has a COEXIST bumper sticker.

    I FUCKING LOVE CALIFORNIA!

There’s really no point in this show: I mean, you could dedicate a whole season of the SpikeTV travesty called “DEA” to knocking over dispensaries in California, and sadly, that would garner more ratings to boot.

Eh it sounds interesting for a reality tv show. I hope they give the clinic a fair portrayal and don’t just make a bunch of stoner jokes.

it’ll be not so great to watch these cannabis stores being relentlessly raided by the feds.  what would be stopping them except the kickbacks from the networks?

I think this is a great idea. I’m 18 years old and taking medicinal Marijuana to cure a Grade IV Glioma that I have been told will kill me. It hasn’t come back since I started taking Cannabis. People have this weird taboo against cannabis but it has been proven to be less harmful than cigarettes, alcohol, and morphine. I am so excited that pepole will finally be able to see that the pharmaseutical companies hold a monopoly in the health care system and that the natural products they can’t charge people for are the ones that actually work.
