What Walkable Los Angeles Would Look Like

Suppose Los Angeles were like Paris, New York, et cetera, with dense, narrow, two-lane streets rather than wide, barren five-lane ones? Artist David Yoon conducted a “fantasy urban makeover in photographs” to show exactly this. On Narrow Streets LA, click on (actual) shots of Japantown, Santa Monica, Downtown, Melrose Avenue (below, real on left and photoshopped on right), and tons of other locations to reveal the far more pleasing, charming, and inviting narrowed versions — a fantastical vision of the non-car-dominated Los Angeles that never was but could have been:

Wouldn’t the wide streets be better for rescue operations after LA’s annual earthquakes?

No… you shouldn’t plan on something horrible and devastating happening and build accordingly.  Yeah, fire escapes and such, yes, you must plan for an emergency situation so people can escape and that’s one thing, but when we start building our streets to compensate for vehicles besides our own, we are not taking care of ourselves, we are being martyrs.

        Oh.

        Ok.

As urban sprawl went west they said bigger is better.  Boston was built on cow paths, NYC on a grid.  Do a little history on urban planning :)

Unimaginable…such a tiny corridor would leave no one room to gun the gas and try to escape during drive bys or carjackings.

I’d like to see the photoshop-ing completely remove the roads. How about an LRT or Tram a la Barcelona or Berlin?

nice grass covered meridian with a sexy lil bombardier silver rocket.

Then LA may actually be liveable.
