Xbox Gamer ‘Dies From Blood Clot’

XBoxReports the AFP via Google News:

LONDON — The family of a budding computer programmer have on Saturday launched a campaign to raise awareness about the health risks of playing online computer games after their son died following a marathon session on his Xbox.

A post-mortem revealed that 20-year-old Chris Staniforth — who was offered a place to study Game Design at Leicester University — was killed by a pulmonary embolism, which can occur if someone sits in the same position for several hours.

Deep vein thrombosis normally affects passengers on long-haul flights, but medical experts fear youngsters who spend hours glued to their consoles might also be at risk and have urged them to take regular breaks.

Professor Brian Colvin — an expert on blood-related conditions — said it was “unhealthy” for youngsters to spend long periods in front of their consoles.

“There’s anxiety about obesity and children not doing anything other than looking at computer screens,” he told the Sun.

Pretty interesting, but it’s only interesting because it’s rare, and it’s only rare because gaming is one of the safest things you can possibly do.

So, to sum up: “Playing Xbox is bad because you have to sit in one position for long periods of time.” “Logically, does that make sitting in one position in front of a computer screen for long periods of time, a requirement for the vast majority of modern jobs, also bad?” “Well yes, but at least you’ll die doing something productive.” Thanks, capitalism.

So what about people who have office jobs that stay stuck to their computers? What about call centers? Now I will use this information to get more breaks at work because of the danger of a blood clot and Im sure they dont want that to happen on the job  ;)

But really…maybe its was a COMBINATION of things? In the article it says he spent sometimes upto 12 hours playing a day? DAM! What the hell were his parents doing to stop him then? Suddenly he dies and they go on a crusade to get people aware that games are evil?! Why not take a second to realize maybe it was your parenting style. Just like the kid that got drunk on loko and the parents were suing the company? Get your shit together and stop blaming others.

While I myself play games i get up every hour or so because I dont turn into a zombie when I play games. Maybe im just ranting like and idiot or maybe not. But parents are really retarded these days and its getting worse. My dad used to kick my ass and when I asked why “Because I can”. After that I knew i better not mess up because if I get my ass kicked for no reason then I hate to see what he would do when I did do something stupid. Now im old enough to take care of my own shit and thanks to those random ass kickings (which did not kill me or hurt my “self-esteem”, or turn me emo) help me now as an adult.

Another point they dont make is was the kid obese or over weight? How was his health? If being in the same position for several hours could kill us I think we would be dropping like leaves in fall.

I would normally be on your side about not playing the blame game but I don’t really think that is the message we should take away from this. It is very rare for a 20yr old to develop a blood clot. I developed one at 32 and the docs were baffled. Yes, there are many factors to be considered when trying to find the cause of a blood clot but…sitting in one place for too long is one of them. No, it isn’t the game companies fault or anything like that but there is nothing wrong with public awareness. And to answer your question, YES, people with sit-down office jobs ARE at a higher risk  for DVT. I had to quit my job as a poker dealer because it was found to be at least the primary cause of my blood clot. You are advised that if you do have to sit for long periods of time that you should at least get up and walk around every hour or so for at least a few minutes. I’m just saying, people should use this piece to educate themselves. Blood clots are VERY serious. Sitting for long periods of time isn’t good for anyone of any age group during work or play.

When the sun has something to do with it, you know it’s bullshit! The only thing the sun is good for is page three. But oh man, page 3, that would have been a much better way to get a pulmonary embolism.

I heard same causes somewhere that One young boy died after playing 12 hours game. So i only saying that anything much is not good for health. Parents should have keep eyes on their child and advice them for video games.
