Austerity And The UK Riots

riotsAre the riots that have engulfed North London and elsewhere linked to the recent slashing of funds for education, social services, and youth centers? The London Review of Books blog says, duh, yes:

Anyone who says the riots don’t have anything to do with the cuts should have a read of ‘Austerity and Anarchy: Budget Cuts and Social Unrest in Europe 1919-2009’, a discussion paper issued under the auspices of the Centre for Economic Policy Research’s international macroeconomics programme and currently doing the rounds on Twitter, which looks at the relationship between budget cuts and civil unrest across Europe since the end of the First World War:

The results show a clear positive correlation between fiscal retrenchment and instability. We test if the relationship simply reflects economic downturns, and conclude that this is not the key factor.

So much for ‘criminality pure and simple’.

it’s funny how much of a hissy fit right wing radio is having over the riots, they know it was caused by the same policies being pursued by the GOP and the teapart. the right wing mind is interesting, they actually believe they can keep fucking over the masses and the masses are supposed to keep taking it .

that’s because the policies are merely a tiny part of what’s been going on in london for the past few days. have you been there? it’s a bunch of uncivilized trash taking advantage of the situation…. it may have started over policies, but that’s not what the sustained destruction is all about, now…. they brainless, uncivilized masses who don’t argue about policies are DESTROYING OUR CITY and GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER.

nothing about that is surprising, go to any large city, soon as you the facade of order cracks you will see a flood of violence. you call it your city, unless you are in the upper portion of society it truly isn’t your city, as the gulf between the haves and have nots widens mote violence can be expected, if a segment of society truly doesn’t have a stake in their communities and nations why not destroy the things they don’t really get to enjoy.

yeah its funny how people think they belong to something and own it just because they live in it, when in fact they are owned by the city. All the destruction is probly going to create jobs for the people that helped burn it in the first place, Its the Order of the Phoenix. We get twisters, floods, hurricanes, wild fires, they get riots with little human toll tomato tomaato.Im just glad its london, the financial monster of the world that causes economic hardship with their inhumane orders world wide. I just hope they burn some banks.

Yes the Phoenix burns itself then rises from its own ashes, like a controlled wild fire caused by lightning. These young soldiers just don’t get to burn foreign villages now that the British empire is no longer alive, still feeling the withdrawal. In the establishments defense they could be a little more creative with their lives shown by this destruction and the the god awful Dub step and grime music they have created out of angst.

Uncivilized trash are generally the rank and file of any war. Sorry they ruined your tea and crumpets.

The parliament indiscriminately slashes and burns entitlements and civil rights; the populous indiscriminately vents its anger at anything in its path.  The police have been trying to lock-down the populous therefore the populous locks-down the police.

For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.  What goes around comes around.

Well done for posting this – now can everyone PLEASE copy and paste it onto the message boards of our OUTRAGEOUS right-wing press over here in the UK? Please have a look at especially Melanie Philips and Max Hastings over at http://www.dailymail.co.uk, who are blaming the whole thing on the ‘Liberal Elite’ and ‘Human Rights Legislation’!! Really, you haven’t read such bollox as they are writing, and what’s worse is people are agreeing! Before long, they’ll be advocating troops on the streets, checking your papers very five minutes like Nazi germany in the 30s! Please STOP THEM spreading their self-agrandising fascist agenda before they ruin the World even further!!! Thanks

Second Recession In This ‘Double Dip’ Will Be Worse Than First

There's no doubt about it, the United States never really recovered from 2008's crash and burn and the gas frantically poured on the fire by the Obama administration to "stimulate"...
