London’s Burning

#tottenham its the polices fault ! The systems Corrupt! Then ... on TwitpicClick through to this breaking story from the Daily Mail for some scenes reminiscent of the ’70s and ’80s that inspired the Clash to write their classic London’s Burning:

Police came under attack from petrol bombs hurled by rioting mobs in North London last night as hundreds took to the streets following the shooting of a man by Scotland Yard marksmen.

Patrol cars, a shop and a double-decker bus were set ablaze and there were reports of looting amid scenes reminiscent of the violent unrest in the same area 26 years ago when PC Keith Blakelock was hacked to death.

Last night the Tottenham area erupted once again as more than 100 officers and specialist riot police faced crowds of more than 500 people protesting about the death of Mark Duggan, who lived on the estate and was described last week by police sources as a ‘gangster’.

There was concern that the disturbances were fanned by Twitter, with some of those taking part posting inflammatory comments from the scene and calling for reinforcements.

One picture of a police car on fire in the area was re-tweeted more than 100 times on the social networking site within an hour.

Mr Duggan, 29, was shot by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s CO19 unit on Thursday evening after the minicab he was travelling in was stopped. There was an apparent ‘exchange’ of fire and a bullet was found lodged in a police radio…

The Daily Mail is unreliable for anything other than a right-wing  interpretation of events (sometimes known as ‘toilet paper’).

    The pix are great though.

(and that wasn’t a criticism of dis-info posting it, to the contrary i APPRECIATE knowing what’s going on!)

A friend of mine went down there… Sounds pretty full on. He mentioned petrol bombs, fires, looting for laptops, trucks of police horses….  Also said at points the crowd were completely in control.

That’s always good to hear.  I’m waiting for the big one that will throw the scum out of the west for good….

Damn it I’ve always wanted to be in a big riot.  I missed all the riots at MSU back in the day, missed the riots in Detroit, missed the G20 riots…if I don’t get to be in a riot while I’m still young enough to run and jump over the prone figure of a policeman retching blood while carrying a TV set I’ll be very upset

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” – Frederick Douglass

Not a surprise that something like this has happened – What with the recent scandals etc, and Scotland Yard’s heavy-handed treatment of ethnic minorities and even photographers (who they regularly stop and search as “potential terrorists”, even though it’s illegal for them to do so), people are totally fed up with them. Add to that the fact that, in the UK, no police marksman has EVER been prosecuted (much less jailed) for shooting and killing a member of the public who has later been proven to be innocent or a victim of mistaken identity, people have just lost faith in them and simply don’t trust them or what they say about any potentially controversial incident they’ve been involved in.

(Usually, all that happens when a British police marksman shoots someone who is later found to be an innocent victim, the officer in question is granted full anonymity, placed on paid leave while a sham “investigation” is conducted by the police themselves, and then quietly returned to full duty a little while later, free to kill another innocent person whenever they feel a bit trigger-happy…)
