Mother Bear Kills Cub and Itself to Escape ‘Crush Cage’ Torture for ‘Bear Bile’

AsiaOne reports:

The Chinese media has reported on an extraordinary account of a mother bear saving her cub from a life of torture by strangling it and then killing itself. The bears were kept in a farm located in a remote area in the North-West of China. The bears on the farm had their gall bladders milked daily for ‘bear bile,’ which is used as a remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

It was reported that the bears are kept in tiny cages known as ‘crush cages’, as the bears have no room to manoeuvre and are literally crushed. The bile is harvested by making a permanent hole or fistula in the bears’ abdomen and gall bladder.

As the hole is never closed, the animals are suspect to various infections and diseases including tumours, cancers and death from peritonitis. The bears are fitted with an iron vest, as they often try to kill themselves by hitting their stomach as they are unable to bear the pain.A person who was on the farm in place of a friend witnessed the procedures and told Reminbao.com that they were inhumane.

The witness also claimed that a mother bear broke out its cage when it heard its cub howl in fear before a worker punctured its stomach to milk the bile.

The Chinese bastards that do that to these bears should first be completely restrained and caged. Then have their stomach and gall bladder punctured, be hooked to (and kept on) an IV that administers just enough glucose and fluids to keep them alive, and be taken outside and left in the elements to eventually die of malnutrition, exposure, or infection some weeks later. Oh – and maybe hook their genitals up to electricity on a timer set to go off every few minutes.

So, basically the same as they did to the bears? Sounds good to me.

Is it any worse than what people in the West do in order to produce a baby-white, tender,  juicy slab of veal:

Despite the date on the article, some of these practices are still performed; furthermore, I’ve heard tales of farmers using electricity — near electrocution of the calves — to keep the meat extra-tender (seems to me like that would have the opposite effect).

It’s not about East vs. West in the first place, by comparing this way it’s almost like you acknowledge that the behavior is to be identified politically or even racially instead of addressing the behavior itself – as if everybody in the West eats veal or every Chinese person is involved in the bear bile business on some level. People want to blame “those guys” so the logic is always it’s someone else. If you can’t even stick to the point with behavior that is this extreme forget about recognizing that mindset, the only animal relevant will be red herrings.

      • Yith

Why didn’t you write something similar under Rex Vestri’s posting, which begins, “The Chinese bastards that do that…”?

The multiple Chinese comments above were what motivated me to write what I did — to show people that it is not an Asian phenomenon.  Furthermore, I had thought of writing about how geese used to be cooked in Europe to show how far we in the West have come in our moral development.

        ….

What do I think about it?  I don’t think it is the result of sociopaths having their way; I doubt that any of the people who are in involved in the extraction of bear bile are sociopaths.

What they do to those bears is, however, sociopathic, and stems from a profound lack of empathy for another mammal; and it probably also stems from the economic necessity of the poor laborers who perform the bile extraction, who hate their shitty jobs, but must feed their families.

Empathy for another, be it human or animal, can be selective.  For example, soldiers who mow down the enemy with gunfire and then high-five one another can be said to have diminished empathy for the enemy. For most them, however, in the context of their ordinary lives their empathy is perfectly intact.  Likewise, certain tribes and ethnic groups can have diminished empathy for neighboring rivals while having an abundance of empathy for their tribe; I’m sure you can think of lots of examples of this, as can I.

I am not sure what the solution to increasing intra-species and intra-tribal empathy is.  It is a problem to which I wish I knew the answer.

wow – one of the most fucked up things I’ve ever read – and I’ve studied both war crimes and international human rights law (esp. torture)

but the moral implications of this… driving animals to murder/suicide…

made me think of Hegel’s Master/Slave dialectic:

“A struggle to the death ensues. However, if one of the two should die,
the achievement of self-consciousness fails. Hegel refers to this
failure as “abstract negation” not the negation or sublation required.
This death is avoided by the agreement, communication of, or
subordination to, slavery. In this struggle the Master emerges as Master
because he doesn’t fear death as much as the slave, and the slave out
of this fear consents to the slavery.”

    and of this speech:

“There’s a time when the operation of the machine becomes so
odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can’t take part. You can’t
even passively take part. And you’ve got to put your bodies upon the
gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and
you’ve got to make it stop. And you’ve got to indicate to the people who

You are human, they are sociopath. There’s a difference. Without a conscience/empathy, in my book, you’re not human or animal, you’re monster. When the original sociopath was born we’ll never know, but the virus/disease/mutation that causes it has been dogging our species for eons, and will continue to until we understand what the hell we’re supposed to do about it.

      • E2

At an individual level there’s not even a recognition of this by most, let alone what to do about it. “Idiot compassion” is not the way, but that’s in essence what many preach. Of course if you don’t see the monstrosity you will act and respond to these people very differently, but that’s basically out of ignorance. There does appear to be a strong strain of such behavior in the population, and between the ignorant and the sociopathic the two appears to make up the majority.

See they did it to the innocent bears, for their own profit, while if any of them had it happen to them, it wouldn’t be an innocent defenseless animal.  I do not think there is anything wrong with eye for an eye, whatever you do in a crime that results in torture or death of an innocent, gets done to you in return.  There is a difference between the two and it does not make us like them.

which is why my money doesn’t go to the meat industry at large here in the US. I know some of my local farmers via our farmers market and know how they raise and process their animals and that’s where I get all my meat and most of my other food too. No money in my control goes to continuing inhumane processes. The only way that’s ever going to stop (in china or here) is if people stop paying for it. When it ceases to be profitable, they’ll stop doing it. Not before.

This is truly disgusting. I think it’s a shame that more attention isn’t given to these kinds of incidents. It’s truly disturbing the kind of things that people can do to animals that is legal and tolerated by most of society. If these same actions were against conducted against people, we’d consider the one doing it, a sociopath beyond rehabilitation. With animals though it’s somehow acceptable to treat them like machines who’s only purpose is to serve us. I’m not sure how anyone with any conscious could find tolerable some of the things we do to animals.

The difference is that if cows were as dangerous as bears they’d spend their life in a crush cage instead of bondage and the American “Farmers” are regulated to use tranquilizers. Americans generally don’t care about the atrocities of the FDA, don’t get me started on how primates suffer at their hands. If you think crap like this doesn’t happen in the west you are willfully ignorant.  Animal testing and experimentation does stuff even worse than this including live vivisections, induced pain and a plethora of other hellish activities.  I won’t even go into the meat industries except to say the next time you eat a burger just imagine that the animal that came from most likely spent its entire life suffering in excruciating pain and was very possibly put through the butchering machine while it was still alive and fully conscious.

Now go rationalize it away, go on, make your excuses about how its so absolutely necessary to have all these lives that only know suffering and pain.
