New Theory Blames KGB For Albert Camus Death

Did the Soviet foreign minister have a hand in the death of famed french writer Albert Camus? Via AFP:

Famous French author Albert Camus, who died in a car accident in 1960, may have been the victim of a Soviet plot, new research suggests.

Italian academic Giovanni Catelli, an eastern European specialist, put forward the theory in the pages of the Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera. On Monday it was greeted with scepticism among other experts.

He noted that a passage in a diary written by Czech poet Jan Zabrana, published as a book, was absent from the Italian translation.

According to Catelli the missing paragraph concerns a meeting between Zabrana and and a Russian KGB contact.

“I heard something very strange from a man who knew lots of things and had very informed sources,” Zabrana writes in the unexpurgated version.

“He said the road accident that cost Albert Camus his life in 1960 was organised by Soviet spies. They damaged a tyre on the car using a piece of equipment that blew out the tyre at a certain speed.”

seems kind of silly, even if the device worked it wouldn’t be a guaranteed kill. from what we know about kgb assassination methods they seemed to be up close and personal with methods like the cyanide gun in a newspaper or the ricen  pellet in the umbrella. this sounds too much like an action film

This makes me wonder, has any person of even moderate fame ever died of natural causes or just some mundane medical condition or accident? It happens you know, I’m sure of it.

Yes I know what you’re thinking. “Yes things like that do happen but that’s not interesting enough to write about mostly. So we hear little of those people, only the exciting theories like this one”. That’s my point, almost always sensationalism. That’s all that interests people, so that is mostly what is written about. It just seems so… I don’t know the right word… but it’s kind of screwed up. I don’t leave myself out of that criticism, I find myself seeking sensationalism at times too. So I’m sitting here wondering why people do that.

Is it because we tend to think that interesting people must have some sort of interesting death. What about some anonymous Jane or John  who was killed by a conspiracy? That’s not less interesting, so maybe it has less to do with the persons original fame. Or maybe their original fame only adds to the sensationalism. Yes that’s probably it. Killing someone of interest publicly and the chance that someone or some group actually got away with it. Maybe that’s a fantasy about the breaking down of society or some living “outside” society, by other or no rules. I’ll think on it a bit.

Ever since JFK had his brain transplanted into a black man’s body and put into the same senior living home as Elvis, and they had to defeat a mummy feeding on the residents of their home as their last adventure, celebrity deaths just seem plain.

        love that movie

They didn’t transplant his brain. They just dyed him that color. They took a little piece of his brain and have it in a jar in DC though. Can you think of a better way to hide the truth than that?

Only vaguely plausible…since Camus did offend a person with clout and that person may have had the wherewithal to arrange vengeance…but I have to admit…it seems a little overdone as far as murder plots go. I mean srsly…that much effort isn’t required to fake an accident…especially a method that doesn’t guarantee actual death…just a car crash.
