Evangelical Trend: Talking In Tongues On Facebook

Is it a hoax, or the holy spirit operating though the internets? Recently the Lord has begun entering the fingers of believers, causing them to “type in tongues”. Via the Christian Post:

Televangelist and self-professed prophetess Juanita Bynum has sparked curiosity among internet users and the Christian community for several comments on the minister’s Facebook page where she appears to type “in tongues.”

Bynum’s prayer posts soon caught the attention of the media, with one reporter at a spirituality website speculating that the minister was communicating “in tongues.” On one prayer post, visitor Cindy McCraw commented, expressing her agreement. “I believe it’s tongues (holy spirit). It’s called praying in the Spirit,” McCraw wrote.

    No. Altered states do not function like that. You cannot oscillate between cogent speech and transcendant speech. Even automatic writing had a specific duration under which the medium wrote subconsciously. And even that writing (john dee, madame blavatsky) had narrative elements and a developed voice. It was not gibberish and random letters. I had thought tongues was supposed to emulate multiple languages synchronously (and i have read it described alternatively as speaking in aramaic or even babylonian). not a near eastern scholar with much knowledge of semitic languages, but doesn’t resemble either arabic or hebrew to me.

    • Not to mention “typing” in “tongues” is just ridiculous… Typing is a rather specific motion that has to be processed through an arbitrary understanting of the keyboard layout etc. The ability to type while in an altered state of consciousness is very dubious to me. and like you said, its supposed to be at least sounds that are understandable as being words… not random 80% consonent gibberish

    • I’ve been at services where I’ve seen this. They seem to think it’s the language of the angels and spirits speaking through them, so the sound of “tongues” is really very different from one person to the next. Most is sheer gibberish but occasionally one will sound like something vaguely proto-Indo European. I am a linguist however with familiarity with several ancient/dead languages and nothing I heard ever really sounded like a language, more like what they thought an ancient language might sound like.  Seemed more like peer pressure to me as an outside observer. There’s an expectation during the service that people will rise up and give messages in languages that no one understands, so it was like, almost no one wanted to be the first person to stand, so it was often the same two or three people who would do it first, but after that, everyone in the room felt like they had to join in or there was something wrong with them. Again, just an outsider’s perspective.

        thank you for your enlightening response. it is very interesting and far outside my own experiences (evangelical services or pentecostals)- anthropologically it makes sense, and i can even understand it to a point during a church service (the nature of trance states);
        the problem is- that it does at least superficially appear akin to spiritualism of some kind, yet co-opted in a judeo christian context to the point where it loses the meaning / understanding of the altered state is lost and deeply redacted. I find its not that i disbelieve the validity of all such altered states (even in a x’tian context), but i disbelieve the nature of them or rather their interpretation.

        And it to me it is only metaphorical. A way of looking at the world that helps me to treat everything with the respect it deserves. Sol, our star, is the our great father, and Terra, the earth, is our great mother, the various plants and animals are represented by their own great spirits, not unlike various animistic religions envision it. The land is represented by a force similar to the Japanese concept of kami.
        Terra provides us the matter with which we can take and shape our physical forms, while Sol provides us the energy we require to animate our forms.

    Uh, huh. And I’ve got a tortilla chip with an image of Jeebus on it. For sale on Ebay. Only $10,000.

  27. As stated below, speaking in tongues is not a phenomenon that translates to typing. It’s also not an occurance I’m inclined to believe over the INTERNET. It’s too easily faked, and is nearly impossible to prove or disprove. The only time this phenemenon has any kind of credibility is when witnessed first hand. Otherwise it’s hearsay and should be treated as such, unless something said is significant to you personally.

    While it’s easy enough to joke about someone having a stroke while posting a comment on Facebook or that the cat walked across the keyboard or something…I actually do think that a few of these Xians, when they are genuinely trying to get into the mood of being a horse for the Holy Spirit, do experience the phenomenon of Glossolalia.  Even if they are part of a belief system whose legacy has been genocide and slavery and general repression…even individuals in these circumstances can use the name of “Jesus” as a symbol for transition into a state the Gnostics were believed to have experienced.

    But then again…they could be trying to post a comment while masturbating.

      from what i remember from the long lost days of catholic school, yes that is exactly what happ’d. when g-d took the form of the burning bush didn’t g-d speak to a diverse group of people who spoke regional languages? g-d spoke in ‘tongues’ which was interpreted to mean a sort of universal language / or rather multiple languages spoken at the same time (but understood by all present).
