Philippines To Outlaw Planking

plankingmanilaIs this the first case of government repression to stamp out a meme? First they came for the plankers, then the owl-ers and cone-ers. From the Washington Post:

There’s some serious weight being thrown against planking, and it’s happening in the Philippines, where Quezon City representative Winston Castelo has filed a bill called the “Anti-Planking Act of 2011.”

Castelo proposed the act following a nationwide transport strike Monday over high oil prices. During the strike, a small group of people went planking at a busy roundabout in Manila to halt traffic.

In a statement, Castelo said that “unbelieving bus drivers and law enforcement authorities might just ram through these warm and living bodies rolled out on highways.”

The Manila Police District backed up Castelo, saying they planned to “break up” any future planking sessions and detain those involved.

Soon their jails will be terribly overcrowded with hipsters — they’ll be on every horizontal surface.

  6. this is just a government trying to save the lives of it’s civilians.  Just like the governments here make it mandatory to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle.  Many drivers in the Philippines will simply drive over anyone who decided to lay down in their way, with little thought to their lives.

I can attest that south east asians in general practice a very frenetic form of driving; however this is simply a form of repression-long practiced in the philipines.

    • I don’t think they are that ruthless, and in rhode Island you dont have to wear a helmet nor have car insurance, you do have to wear sunglasses while ridding a motorcycle to protect your ultra coolness. Now thats governing. And a little while back they had prostitution.

The way I see it, helmets when motorcycling should be at the liberty of the rider for a couple reasons, First, if you are dumb enough to not wear a helmet and you crash and die, then that’s probably just natural selection, second if you are dumb enough to not wear a helmet and yet good enough to not crash and die, power to you, and third, if you are smart enough to wear a helmet then you should probably be fine either way.
I always wear my helmet. And I have not crashed and needed its protection.

    • Sounds like natural selection.
