Vast Majority Of Israelis Want To Recognize Palestinian State, Poll Reveals

tumblr_lrvryfI92b1qbkts6o1_500Regarding the question of Palestinian statehood, Barack Obama nows hold a position far to the right of the Israeli populace. Raw Story writes:

Nearly 70 percent of Israelis surveyed recently said that Israel should accept a Palestinian state if the United Nations chooses to recognize it, according to a report in Thursday’s edition of The Jerusalem Post.

The poll results fly in the face of American conservatives and even President Barack Obama, who have taken the lead in discouraging the U.N. from voting on the matter, claiming that it could threaten Israel’s security.

The study was carried out by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. A further 83 percent of Palestinians said that turning to the U.N. for statehood is the right thing to do.

The United States has vowed to veto any request for Palestinian statehood at the Security Council, potentially sparking a new Middle East crisis. Tens of thousands of Palestinians took part in rallies to back the Palestinian leader on Wednesday.

For Obama, the confrontation is an embarrassment as 12 months ago he stood before the same assembly and called for Palestinian membership in the United Nations within a year.

  3. See? Democracy is dead. The ruling classes have nothing but contempt for the actual will of the people.

    • Most parties in the israeli government are also not against there being a Palestine, they, like the people who voted for them, just don’t believe that the creation of such a state in the west bank is more important than creating one in a safe and secure way with concessions on both sides (as opposed to current expectations).

Oh I know, things gotta be done carefully, but the overall will is there.

That Israel is willing to accept a Palestine hasn’t really been an issue in the past. It’s that the vast majority of Palestinians won’t accept an Israel that’s been a serious problem. Not to mention the refusal to work with compromises.

It’s that the majority of Palestinians won’t accept an Israel, and even engraved that attitude into their government’s charters, that’s been a serious problem. You mean the will of the citizenry projected by those of power and influence and the actual opinion of the citizenry are in complete contrast?

It should be a 1 state solution with Jerusalem as the capital.  If both Palestinians, Jews, Christians, and Seculars all claim that they can live together peacefully as two separate nations then there is no reason they cannot live peacefully as one nation.  There should be two congressional chambers, a Senate where each district has the same number of representatives and a Parliament where representatives are assorted based on the highest voters.

the issue is that the Jewish State is simply that, a Jewish State.

  14. The only thing standing in the way of this is the same thing thats always stood in the way of this…the tiny clique of real estate moguls linked into the Israeli government and backed by radical extremist ideologues who  justify land theft with claims of divine right. Until the actual people of Israel…who are overwhelmingly decent and reasonable people…do the unthinkable and shitcan the powerbrokers at the top…nothing will change…ever. Hell…the same could be said anywhere…but building the momentum to force change isn’t easy anywhere else either.

Over the years thousands of square miles of land was stolen from Muslim Palestinians and sold or rented to Jewish European immigrants. Who got that money, who helped to create a criminal state so they could fraudulently gain that money, where did those land theft profits go all question that apparently the Israeli President of the United States must now answer. The land thefts are real and the US President defends them, so how come US citizens end up paying for those thefts and gained no benefit, instead they paid for and died in Israeli wars that profited Israeli land grabbing millionaires.
