147 Companies ‘Own Everything’

New Scientist reveals the capitalist network that runs the world:

As protests against financial power sweep the world this week, science may have confirmed the protesters’ worst fears. An analysis of the relationships between 43,000 transnational corporations has identified a relatively small group of companies, mainly banks, with disproportionate power over the global economy.

The study’s assumptions have attracted some criticism, but complex systems analysts contacted by New Scientist say it is a unique effort to untangle control in the global economy. Pushing the analysis further, they say, could help to identify ways of making global capitalism more stable.

The idea that a few bankers control a large chunk of the global economy might not seem like news to New York’s Occupy Wall Street movement and protesters elsewhere (see photo). But the study, by a trio of complex systems theorists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, is the first to go beyond ideology to empirically identify such a network of power. It combines the mathematics long used to model natural systems with comprehensive corporate data to map ownership among the world’s transnational corporations (TNCs).

“Reality is so complex, we must move away from dogma, whether it’s conspiracy theories or free-market,” says James Glattfelder. “Our analysis is reality-based.”…

    Here’s a thought, most
everyday humans are tied into any number of systems at any one
    time..e.g (family, work, consuming e.t.c.)

    All of these systems
are related to our economic and social structure and

    progression.

    So everyday people have
no time to offer to the cause, but they like all of us have power no
matter how little it all builds up.

    My idea is this
construct a widely circulated e-leaflet stating this message.

    What we can do
    together!

    We the Human collective
society understand that the general public at large has many
important responsibilities such as family, work, bills e.t.c. and are
therefore unable to camp out and protest.

    However we can still
use all our collective power to send bad business, corporations,
financial institutions and leaders a clear message of what we expect
    from them.

    We shall organise a two
week campaign whereupon as a consuming society we can speak with our
    pockets.

On each day of the week
an unpopular economic giant will be be targeted and as a
consuming society we can refuse to trade with them, all together all
    day long.

    For an example:

    No media Monday – don’t
download any i-tunes, withdraw your purchasing power from media
    giants we are unhappy with.

    No news corporations on
    Tuesday- (Don;t buy your newspaper, don’t download any e-news, don’t;
    watch any news.

    No banking on Wednesday
    - only make cash transactions all day long no credit/debit card use,
everyone who are able can transfer a £1 from their bank account to
    their paypal account.

    No Supermarket Saturday
    - Only purchase local goods from local shops empowering the small
    business.

    No Fuel Friday – No
one fill up on a Friday and punish the energy companies

    Switch off Sunday –
turn off your electrics/gas for the day or minimise it’s use where
    possible.

    This idea is in it’s
early stages, but it is the small things we can all do together that
make a big statement. It is this statement that the general public
who feel their little time and heavy responsibility restricts them
    helping need to hear.

    Empowering us all with
    achievable objectives as a collective

    If it were to work
correctly then clear messages would be heard globally and large
economic entities would feel forever under the watchful eye of the
    purchasing society.

    Without the public as
whole consuming and trading there is no economic system.

    We don’t have to stop
consuming, we just need to exercise the power it gives us as a
    society as a whole.

    I hope someone will
take this idea and help it evolve into what it could be.

    Many thanks for taking
    the time to read.

    If you be offended then
look away, if you be interested then breathe life into the idea and
    help it on towards physicality.

    What
we conceive in our mind we create in our world.

It Would seem to be a copy and paste issue. It shows text as spaced correctly and when it posts it appears with extra spacing.

Don’t worry i am aware of how the economic system is constructed. I am also a very old soul and understand the transiency of reality programs (after all we are just the potential of an idea projected into a hard light environment etc).

My idea was more for the general public whom have little power to help the cause but can use that little power combined as a big force.

I also mentioned that this was an infant idea that needs support nourishment and development.

Easy to criticise harder to create.

I hope this helps better communications my friend as we are all on the same team.

One thing won’t chime with some of the protesters’ claims: the super-entity is unlikely to be the intentional result of a conspiracy to rule the world. “Such structures are common in nature,” says Sugihara.
This is a non sequitur. Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s not a conspiracy. Maybe that natural inclination of systems to organize this way manifests itself with humans through conspiracy. I’m not necessarily saying it is a conspiracy, I’m just saying that “natural” and “conspiracy” are not mutually exclusive.

What this thread and the overwhelming majority of posters on it demonstrate is a lack of understanding as to how the financial services industry works. Is it any wonder that the list so closely mirrors the top 100 largest asset managers? No, because through pension plans, 401k/403b plans and individual funds, they manage trillions in assets — assets ultimately belonging to individuals who are predmoninantly not in the “1%”.Furthermore, the inclusion of the DTCC — the Depository Trust Clearing Corporation — is riduculous. It’s a CLEARING HOUSE that all large, self-clearing firms participate in. Securities held in brokerage accounts in “street name” – negotiable form, but still owned by the individual account holder – get book/computer entry notation at the DTCC…but are neither owned, custodied or controlled by the DTCC. The DTCC merely acts as an intermediary, the same way your bank does when you deposit a check Joe Smith writes you — Joe’s check (and the currency it represents) is not owned or even controlled by the bank, merely processed by it.I won’t even go into detail on the mutual insurance companies on the list except to say that these companies are 100% owned by their policy holders. Finally, there are a list of ‘custodian banks’ on the list — companies who hold the assets of asset managers to ensure timely and accurate processing of things like foreign dividend and bond interest payments, name changes (as in the case of mergers), foreign currency conversion and the like. Again, they do not OWN or CONTROL the assets, they merely HOUSE the assets on behalf of a third party. And several of those custodian banks (like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of New York Mellon and Citibank) have very large custody businesses AND very large asset management businesses, further obfuscating the issue to the uninitiated.A better list would be the actual asset *owners*, rather than the vendors who manage, invest house and clear said assets on behalf of third parties, including (primarily) the general public.
