British Man To Be Turned Into Mummy

Strange_But_True_3-_631317tThis is the way to do it: live a rich and full life, and then be turned into a monster after dying. The Belfast Telegraph writes:

A former taxi driver has become the first person for 3,000 years to be mummified in the same way as the pharaohs. Alan Billis will be turned into a mummy over the space of a few months as his body is preserved using the techniques which the ancient Egyptians used on Tutankhamun.

Mr Billis had been terminally ill with cancer when he volunteered to undergo the procedure which a scientist has been working to recreate for many years. The 61-year-old from Torquay in Devon had the backing of his wife Jan, who said: “I’m the only woman in the country who’s got a mummy for a husband.”

Dr Stephen Buckley, a chemist and research fellow at York University, has spent 19 years trying to uncover the preservation techniques which the Egyptians used during the 18th dynasty.

Alongside archaeologist Dr Jo Fletcher, Dr Buckley has studied mummified bodies, analysing tissue samples and finally putting his findings into practice by putting them to the test on Mr Billis’s body at Sheffield’s Medico-Legal Centre.

He’s really gonna be the odd man out when he arrives at the Egyptian afterlife.

I thought that they had already figured out the secrets and recreated it awhile ago? Just seems pointless, unless since it’s nearly Halloween; they plan on taking him trick or treating?

This is not quite correct. Abbout twenty years ago, Bob Brier and Ronn Wade created a mummy at John Hopkin’s University here in the US. A 30 or so min film was made about it and I would not be surprized if National Geographic Society isn’t still selling it. Brier is an Egypologist and Wade a scientist. They made use of the best available substences, including using Nigerian Palm wine since palm wine isn’t used in Egypt anymore and flaking the obsidian blades to cut the flesh. Other items, such a natron salts, were brought from Egypt by Brier.

The body was from a medical study donation pool. And I believe, it is still kept in a vault and monitored for bacterial group (nil). JHS
