Congress Declares Pizza A Vegetable For School Lunches

pizzaPizza contains two tablespoons of tomato paste and thus will remain the healthy, vegetable portion of children’s lunch across the nation. The move draws criticism from nutritionists but kudos from the head of the American Frozen Food Institute, reports MSNBC:

Congress wants to keep pizza and french fries on school lunch lines, fighting back against an Obama administration proposal to make school lunches healthier.

The final version of a spending bill released late Monday would unravel school lunch standards the Agriculture Department proposed earlier this year, which included limiting the use of potatoes on the lunch line and delaying limits on sodium and delaying a requirement to boost whole grains. The bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. USDA had wanted to prevent that.

Food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools, the salt industry and potato growers requested the changes, and some conservatives in Congress say the federal government shouldn’t be telling children what to eat.

Nutrition advocate Margo Wootan of the Center for Science in the Public Interest said Congress’s proposed changes will keep schools from serving a wider array of vegetables. Children already get enough pizza and potatoes, she says. It would also slow efforts to make pizzas — a longtime standby on school lunch lines — healthier, with whole grain crusts and lower levels of sodium. “They are making sure that two of the biggest problems in the school lunch program, pizza and french fries, are untouched,” she said.

“This agreement ensures that nutrient-rich vegetables such as potatoes, corn and peas will remain part of a balanced, healthy diet in federally funded school meals and recognizes the significant amounts of potassium, fiber and vitamins A and C provided by tomato paste, ensuring that students may continue to enjoy healthy meals such as pizza and pasta,” said Kraig Naasz, president of the American Frozen Food Institute.

I don’t see why Pizza couldn’t be made into a healthy snack. As it is, it’s just bread, tomato, and cheese plus the possible meat and veggie thrown in. All those ingredients can be healthy if done properly.

No surprises here. In the Reagan years wasn’t there a push to count ketchup as a vegetable?

Say no to drugs unless they are from big pharma.
Say no to vegetables unless they are on pizza.
Say no to conspiracy theories unless they’re from the government.
Say no to free speech only if it’s something you don’t agree with.
Your next door neighbor could be a terrorist and we all should just walk around naked to be more safe.

They sell crotchless panties for 7 year old girls. (Possibly to make the TSA’s job easier??)

WTF ARE WE TEACHING OUR KIDS!!??

That crotchless panties are a healthy snacking alternative. You see,
since they may contain vegetable-derived components they can also be
      considered vegetables.

I just read about the crotchless panties thing this morning. Why would they make those for such young children, why? I mean, common..

to be fair i just traveled and tsa was super proffesional with me. I guess i got lucky and they liked my looks. All those problems must be overzealous workers trying to secure their jobs. Just a little positivity. No need to flame.

I travel all the time for my job. Most of the time the TSA gives me no trouble. I still don’t understand their roll though, they’re not going to keep us safe from a determined terrorist. So they must only be here to piss us off and take our rights away, and that’s why I dislike them. I would never take my anger out on an individual TSA agent though, it’s just a job to them.

Hey pizza can be made healthy just make it yourself from scratch.  Just make sure to leave out that list of extra chemicals you would see in a totinos or Digiorno Frozen Pizza.  And leave out the mechanically seperated squirrel/chipmunk….I mean Pepperoni and sausage.  Someone once told me that those ingredients were a molecule away from being harmful.  Last time I checked a molecule wasn’t very big.

Wow Americans are pretty lucky, hot chips and pizza for lunch? That’s awesome! All you can buy in schools for lunch in New Zealand there days are fresh sandwiches, fruit and salads…. no wonder the younger generation are so skinny! Gone are the days where fish’n’chips and hot pies were the main source of a brought lunch.

Ha yeah you can’t beat a healthy lunch, in saying that a well made pizza is hard to beat, but then a well made pizza is healthy. (Cheese and sauce sounds horrible) Perhaps they should start making pizza with a range of fresh veggies and meats, or is that going too far?

Dolt, corporations are defining what vegetables are, they are just getting the government to behave like a bunch bobbleheads http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobblehead. You cannot be serious. Two tablespoons of tomato paste isn’t even a whole vegetable. A whole vegetable would contain all the vitamins and minerals a growing child needs. That two tablespoons of tomato paste isn’t going to provide all the vitamins and minerals. I do agree with the conservatives on that the federal government shouldn’t be telling children what to eat though ; the choice of what to eat is entirely up to the child. However if the pizza is considered a vegetable the producers better be piling on vegetables to cover the stuff that their missing in the tomato sauce
