Congress Got 25% Richer During Height of Recession

Rich CongressSeems like time to Occupy Congress … Paul Singer and Jennifer Yachnin report on Roll Call:

Members of Congress had a collective net worth of more than $2 billion in 2010, a nearly 25 percent increase over the 2008 total, according to a Roll Call analysis of Members’ financial disclosure forms.

Nearly 90 percent of that increase is concentrated in the 50 richest Members of Congress.

Two years ago, Roll Call found that the minimum net worth of House Members was slightly more than $1 billion; Senators had a combined minimum worth of $651 million for a Congressional total of $1.65 billion. Roll Call calculates minimum net worth by adding the minimum values of all reported assets and subtracting the minimum values of all reported liabilities.

According to financial disclosure forms filed by Members of Congress this year, the minimum net worth in the House has jumped to $1.26 billion, and Senate net worth has climbed to at least $784 million, for a Congressional total of $2.04 billion.

    Should this really be a surprise to anyone.  Of course they got richer…. anyone that helped promoting that bailout got some kickback.  The WaMU deal that Jamie Dimon at Chase orchestrated couldn’t have gone through without some assistance from his little ‘helper’. After all someone pocketed all those who got burned on WAMU stocks.  Just wait and see what their net worths are when they finally leave their posts.  Guaranteed they at least quadruple.

    Maybe this will “trickle down”? Or maybe we’re just getting pissed on. I bet if the rest of us pooled our resources we could still afford to go into the guillotine business. Is there a lot of call for guillotines still? I get the impression, call it a vibe, there could be a sudden demand. We’d have to go about it economically, that means buying the supplies at a big box corporate company like Home Depot or Wal Mart. If that’s not the definition of irony I don’t know what is.

      The difference being?

      • Simiantongue

        Well, can we subsist on the elites manna that trickles onto us, or is it just more like a runny guano? Anyway, I imagined it as a golden shower. I try and keep on the bright side of life. On the other hand you can’t subsist on piss, doesn’t human piss just kill everything? Unless you’re the Mariner with that wonderful little glass pump you can piss into to make fresh water. But that’s fiction… I think. I guess the overall picture is there is an upper consumption class who fertilize those of us below. Very darwinian eh? Look at me I’m a flower!

        So the difference is decided by you ultimately. Can you subsist on what’s being trickled, are you satisfied to being resigned to a lower position on the consumption food chain? Does that fulfil you? Or do you feel you’re just being pissed on, that ultimately this piss is unfulfilling and poisonous. I’m thinking about guillotines so my feelings on it are not very ambiguous. I prefer most times to put things in a way so as to allow you to decide while still making my view apparent. Call it a personal flaw.

          No, your overall point was apparent.

          Speaking from a non-metaphorical standpoint, regarding your equating piss with that which is given to us peasants as a means of survival, people actually do consume urine (their own or that of others) for various reasons including matters regarding health, in an act called urophagia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urophagia). Disgusting though it may be—in my opinion, anyway—it would be technically possible to survive on the stuff, for a while at least.

          Speaking metaphorically, however, I was remarking upon your distinction between trickle-down and the wealthy pissing on us, as I see little delineation to be made. The ‘elites’ only need us well enough, and intelligent enough, to operate the system they benefit from.

          But, following your lead at remaining optimistic, and presuming they have been fertilising more than flowers, let us make use of the surrounding trees to build those guillotines.

            That’s interesting. I knew of a  “communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our bodily fluids” in Dr Strangelove. I wasn’t aware of it’s use in alternative medicine. My personal experience was that whatever you piss on dies. When I was a kid I had this penchant for urinating outside. I’d piss on everything the lawn, hedges, flowers etc. Much to my parents chagrin. They never could figure out why those dead spots appeared over the years. So I associated pissing on things with killing them. Too subjective and idiosyncratic I guess, I hadn’t considered that might not be others experience. Oh well. My idea in that comment was basically to see what every ones perspective was about the idea of the rich getting richer and having that “trickle down” to the rest of us. Do you see it as a golden shower or do you see it as being pissed on? I know many people who are not only perfectly happy with the idea of being rained on from on high, but defend it vigilantly. Not that I don’t altogether blame them for that. They think they have a lot at stake. As Bill Hicks would say “We have a lot invested in this ride! SHUT HIM UP! Look at my furrows of
            worry. Look at my big bank account, and my family. This just has to be
            real.”. Yeah sure they buy into the illusion and who am I to deny them the bliss ignorance provides? We all have our illusions, far be it from me to take away theirs. But I was curious nonetheless to see responses. My comments often times rely exclusively on others
            response to develop, if not I tend to get verbose. Instead of these long posts I’ve been trying to post something that will develop more fully
            if someone responds. Though this requires coming back again and again and to be honest I haven’t unlimited time to do that usually. I’m finding mostly people don’t respond, which is ok too. The idea is to encourage interaction and
            development of an idea in a thread or just plain simple humor. Take everything I say with a dash of smirk on it. That being said I thank you for this response. Another example. I’m waiting for someone to take up my comment on the newly posted “Condo at the end of the world” thread. I’ll admit here on this thread that it’s deliberately seeded for an awesome response. That is if someone were familiar enough with the Mad Max cannon. The obvious response to my post would be “Sorry the brothels full”. Which is The Collectors response to Max, that would be epic. Inasmuch as two people would connect in the shared experience of that particular movies fandom, but also to share it with others in a very humorous way. My comments are often of this type of machination. Is that devious? Meh.

      ‘Off with their heads’.  All that is happening when these guys get caught with their hand in the cookie jar is that hand is being slapped.  In other countries they cut hand off as a reminder.

    This proves how smart the Homeland politicians are;
    they know how to make shrewd investments
    and manage their money carefully enough
    to profit during an economic down turn;
    or
    it could prove they are all crooks on the take.
    You make the call!
