Frank Miller (Comic Book Legend) Slams the Occupy Movement

Goddamn BatmanWell, he is responsible for the “Goddamn Batman” after all … Says Frank:

Everybody’s been too damn polite about this nonsense:

The “Occupy” movement, whether displaying itself on Wall Street or in the streets of Oakland (which has, with unspeakable cowardice, embraced it) is anything but an exercise of our blessed First Amendment. “Occupy” is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America.

“Occupy” is nothing short of a clumsy, poorly-expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the “movement” – HAH! Some “movement”, except if the word “bowel” is attached – is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves.

This is no popular uprising. This is garbage. And goodness knows they’re spewing their garbage – both politically and physically – every which way they can find.

Wake up, pond scum. America is at war against a ruthless enemy.

Didnt you hear?  It’s work if you get paid.  That’s how it came to be that CEOs work so hard.

Fascism’s preeminent spokesman in the USA is a little upset that the people are getting uppity. Don’t worry, Frank.  Our betters will not tolerate peaceful camping in public spaces for long- at least not if it is critical of them and the world they have made for us.  Their first attempts to disperse the rabble may have failed, but it was but a first try.  Here, Frank, look at this video-  the looters, thieves and rapists show their cowardice by facing down a phalanx of police with nothing but their voices.  That takes more courage then sending your helots to die in the front battle line, no?

    http://redgreenandblue.org/2011/11/14/david-brin-why-the-occupy-wall-street-kids-are-better-than-the-spartans/d

And who needs that kind of courage messing up people’s expectations?  Our betters are better simply because they are richer, not because of some kind of moral courage.  Hell, if a lousy hippie has enough moral courage to sit calmly and take a faceful of pepper spray, then normal decent Volk shouldn’t want to have it,  It’s disruptive and gets in the way the ongoing redistribution of wealth and power to the top earners.

What is it with famous artists & talents turning into cranks? Ezra Pound, TS Eliot, Bobby Fischer, Glenn Gould, any Hollywood actor on a crusade to save the world, Bono. I guess fame catches up to you eventually, exposing you at your worst no matter the personality type. At least Miller wasn’t being anti-semitic; but still: you’d think he’d be at least sympathetic to the idea of free speech. More so he seems peeved that others can say what they want in a medium or manner that they choose.

follow up to this post, just found a great rant by Ambrose Bierce regarding Oscar Wilde:

“There never was an impostor so hateful, a blockhead so stupid, a crank
so variously and offensively daft. Therefore is the fool enamored of
the feel of his tongue in her ear to tickle her understanding.

The limpid and spiritless vacuity of this intellectual jellyfish is in
ludicrous contrast with the rude but robust mental activities that he
came to quicken and inspire. Not only has he no thoughts, but no
thinker. His lecture is mere verbal ditch-water — meaningless, trite and
without coherence. It lacks even the nastiness that exalts and refines
his verse. Moreover, it is obviously his own; he had not even the energy
      and independence to steal it.”

Frank Miller eat your heart out.

Unfortunately, he’s neither: Miller has been a complete right-wing fuckhead since 9/11.  Like a lot of people in this country who had never even heard of al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, or Afghanistan before late 2001, when the WTC terror attacks happened he had a grand political epiphany along the lines of “Scary scary Muslim scary! America good! Terrorists bad! Save me Jebus – I mean George Bush!” Schmuck.

      • Honu November 20, 2011 at 1:24 pm #

Some people’s filaments are thinner than you’d expect.  Dennis Miller blew his bulb after 9-11 also.

        • Adam November 20, 2011 at 6:11 pm #

Very true and good point.  Both seem like intelligent, talented Millers who completely bought-in to the neo-con worldview after the 9/11 terror attacks because they were scared and didn’t know how to really process 3000 people getting murdered by religious fanatics; hell, I don’t think I’ve completely processed it myself, and it’s been ten years and I didn’t even know anyone who was killed.

To be honest, the Frank Miller thing bugs me more because I’m actually a fan of his stuff (except for “300″), whereas I’ve never actually cared about Dennis Miller’s comedy one way or the other.

how would anyone hear of al-qaeda before the u.s. government fabricated them as an opponent?

        • Poeticaction13 November 22, 2011 at 5:17 pm #

Rus, I was well aware of Al-Queda as was anyone who reads international news, 9-11 was not their 1st move so IF they were US backed/ instigated the planners wasted a lot of time before they got your attention. The things it takes to get peoples attention these days! Sorry for what might sound disrespectful to the dead, I don’t mean it in that sense, but not following the news is not a good reason to assume something. If there is a lie here it is buried a layer or two deeper than you have yet peered into….

        • Adam November 22, 2011 at 7:47 pm #

Oh for fuck’s sake, I know this was going to crop up soon or later, as this is disinfo…

Look, if you want to think that the US govt planned, enacted and controlled the 9-11 terror attacks entirely on its own (or certain elements of the govt did, or in collusion with Israel or the Mossad, or the Illuminati, or the Draconians, or fucking Frank Miller) then that’s your business; I disagree, sorry.  It’s not that I don’t think that the US govt (MY govt) was not and is not logistically or morally capable of such an act, just that they did not do so in this instance.

Did the Bush administration, with the complete and cowardly cooperation of the Democratic Party, exploit the living shit out this tragedy to further their own greedy, warmongering agenda? Hell yes.  Did they (and the Clinton administration) ignore warnings that such an attack would occur in the months and years before 9-11 (a la the Phoenix memo)? Almost certainly. Did the United States have a great deal of culpability in creating the situation and conditions necessary for a group like al-Qaeda to come about, and is this still reflected in our immoral, hypocritical, profit-driven foreign policy?  Of course – Bin Laden and others like him were called “freedom fighters” in the 80s by Reagan himself when those fanatic assholes were fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan; all of this was done with our money, our weapons, our intelligence, and our training. I literally got into fistfights with people when I tried to tell them this ten years ago.

However…while I think there are a great deal of questions that remain about 9-11 (such as: did our Air Force shoot down Flight 93?), I personally think that yes, pissed-off Muslim extremists committed these attacks, and that Bush did not “knock down the towers” (with apologies to Immortal Technique).  I understand and (mostly) respect the opinion of people who think otherwise, but I personally believe that al-Qaeda terrorists, with funding and inspiration from Osama Bin Laden, carried out the 9-11 attacks. I think this for a variety of reasons, but one in particular stands out to me:

          They hit the fucking Pentagon.

          • Rus Archer November 23, 2011 at 6:46 pm #

arguing with things i did not say
all i said was the u.s. government fabricated al-qaeda
not supported, not created, not funded, not trained
            FABRICATED
yes, terrorist groups existbut this global al-qaeda conspiracy = fabricationa handful of dudes here or there?they only started using the name AFTER the u.s. propaganda machine came up with it”oh, shit, they’re scared of whoever this al guy is, let’s use THAT name, THEN they’ll fear us”

          • Adam November 23, 2011 at 8:29 pm #

You are contradicting yourself – to fabricate means to create.  And what do you mean exactly by “fabricate” anyway?  Certain Islamic fundamentalists (Bin Laden/al-Zawahiri/Taliban associates) only used the name AFTER 9/11? Please explain further.

And yes, like Poeticaction13 I had heard of al-Qaeda before 9/11.

That’s the fox new talking point “a bunch of criminals, rapists, addicts…blah blah blah” first off, its about time someone stood up against they bankers and monied interests who are fucking the world up- second, if nothing else, they exposed how little freedom we actually have, and how our “rights” are a myth. I think Mr Miller is entitled to his opinion.  I don’t watch Fox news or MSNBC.  However, I find these OWS people to be nothing more than beggars.  They want something for nothing.  I am not rich and have always worked for everything I own. I do not begrudge others from doing the same.  However, I do not want a habd out from anyone.  I don’t want something I didn’t earn.  Redistribution of wealth is taking without earning.

I’m glad someone made the “bowel” movement joke before I had to. The funny thing is, the nation’s been constipated for way too long, and people want to act like we can just hide this huge shit under a rug without it stinking up the place.

To further this gross metaphor, maybe if we used it to fertilize something we might have some damn growth, but people keep yelling at eachother about the smell, and trying to get the other guy to clean up the mess.

But, but he’s a “wealth creator”! Without his company, there wouldn’t be any jerbs for the citizens of gotham. And without employment, people are totally screwed within the income/employment paradigm. For they are deprived of access to the means of production and the resources necessary for life thanks to the concept of private property and capital, meaning they have to sell themselves to owners of capital(or if they do own property, allow it to be exploited and therefore destroyed) or face starvation, or if they’re lucky have to live off of charity. So we must do everything we can to grovel for the owners of capital and allow them to rape the land and exploit our labor so we can just go on living.
Whoa, kind of went off on a tangeant there…

As an artist and designer I have to take issue with that. Just because you sit at a desk doesn’t mean the mental work isn’t every bit as exhausting. I’ve worked factory work and now I’m a desk jockey — most days the desk job leaves me more wrung out. It’s less physically demanding but overall more stressful. When I was working factory I was bone tired at the end of a day but I still had creative power left for art. For some people it’ll be the other way around, sure, but the point is that drawing cartoons is actually pretty hard work for next to no money. Just because it only takes you a few seconds to look at doesn’t mean it only took a few seconds to create.

Not that I agree with a word he’s saying, just I think you’re way way way off base.

The main thing to know, quartz99 is that Frank Miller is neither an artist, a writer or a working man,  and as far as I can tell from the ranted posted above, he’s not a thinker either.

““Occupy” is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly
mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness.
These clowns can do nothing but harm America.”

Louts – like what, Frank Miller?
Thieves – like what, the government, banks, military, corporations and churches?
Rapists -  oops, I said the C-word in the post-priest era.  Maybe I should have said Blackwater Security or I don’t know,  the entire lot of them,  Gaia’s ass is bleeding and all
Unruly mob -  sounds more like the Balmy Army or a day in any parliament you can find – I mean seriously, what the fuck?
Woodstock-era nostalgia – oh yes, let’s all eat magic mushrooms and go back home when we run out of pot.  Give me a fuckin break…..if the hippies did their job properly we wouldn’t be in this mess now,  nostalgia?  more like disdain
Putrid false righteousness – we’ve never seen that before, have we *rolls eyes*

And then the last statement – laughable.  Harm america?  What about the rest of the world you jackass, WE’RE ALL PROTESTING.

P.S.  Frank Miller is the jackass, not you

follow up to this post, just found a great rant by Ambrose Bierce regarding Oscar Wilde:

Jin, you’re probably my favorite commenter on this board. Your responses “jive” pretty well with my own outlook and philosophies, but… you don’t have to take any negative comments about comic books and their readers so seriously. Let people think what they think. If it happens to be an ignorant view (like the anti-comics comments) that view will come back to bite that person in the ass some way or another.

Since Andrew brought up the issue of “insecurities,” if you know who you are and are proud of who you are and are SECURE in who you are. Ignorant-but-ultimately-harmless views like Skycake’s shouldn’t really bother you.

Very true and good point.  Both seem like intelligent, talented Millers who completely bought-in to the neo-con worldview after the 9/11 terror attacks because they were scared and didn’t know how to really process 3000 people getting murdered by religious fanatics; hell, I don’t think I’ve completely processed it myself, and it’s been ten years and I didn’t even know anyone who was killed.

To be honest, the Frank Miller thing bugs me more because I’m actually a fan of his stuff (except for “300″), whereas I’ve never actually cared about Dennis Miller’s comedy one way or the other.

    we need govement out of our lives even more than ever!!!  Asking the govement to put more controls over someone earning, making or becoming richer is turning this country away from why America is America.  But since we are supposed to have free speech, which I begin to wonder about.  However I wish these people who want these controls,  to realize, once you give this control, others will be taken away without your approval.  you need to realize how many of your rights were already taken away{ Since 9/11}

  123. Anonymous November 21, 2011 at 3:45 am #

Nah, I think most of us comic fans have pretty much stopped paying attention to what Miller’s doing anymore is all so people condemning his hateful little screed is no big deal, particularly considering how many of us are more liberal and are more likely to have seen the screed and be the ones condemning it… And V has nothing to do with Miller anyway.

Anyway, if you can't take a joke then you deserve to kill yourself… #AllHonesty All my life I've been a fat fuck, especially elementary through middle school. I got teased everyday until i learned to stand up for myself. It didn't hurt that i had a basketball hoop in my backyard and a fresh pair of Air Jordans either. I joked back, fought back, and most importantly i learned to ignore bullshit. If kids now-a-days can't even take a Facebook comment without crying to their moms, then we are going to have an even softer generation than we do now.

P.S. This is to the person(s) that flagged my comment. It wasn't even that bad and that is exactly what I am talking about… filtering everything so you wont hurt FEELINGS ( Yes… FEELINGS!!!). The sad part is "you guys" are the 1st to cry about transparency.

uh neither…. it’s a pretty universal medium, and has greater appeal amongst working and middle class people. considered ‘low brow.’ although the last decade has seen an explosion in academic work on comics.

in my undergrad days i took 2 entire courses on it. pretty good for the conservative high brow school i attended.

as a grad, comics /graphic fiction is  the focus of my minor.

      still pretty far from elitist.

i remember when you couldn’t buy manga/manhwa in canada, and i would bring suitcases of it back from singapore. NO one considered it cool then.

the film remakes/franchises have increased their mainstream visibility, and also deeply contributed to the vast range of shitty titles and spin offs of mainstream characters…

still comics have an undeniable alternative appeal, and many titles have deeply subversives undertones.

Unlike you at least these people know it’s almost impossible to find employment. Capitalism has failed but that doesn’t mean it will go away anytime soon. Unfortunately it still fuels the

  148. Adam November 22, 2011 at 11:47 pm #

“you guys” whom does that mean exactly?

  151. rusthand November 23, 2011 at 7:22 pm #

  152. rusthand November 23, 2011 at 7:29 pm #

  153. Andrew November 23, 2011 at 7:54 pm #

Most of them aren’t beggars and they don’t want handouts of something for nothing.  They want the government to do the will of the voters, not the campaign contributors.

  154. rusthand November 23, 2011 at 3:59 pm #

It’s funny.  I’ve read through the majority of the posts.  It seems that the only one who isn’t entitled to his opinion is Frank Miller.  It seems as though only supporters of the OWS movement are allowed to be heard.  If your opinion differs from the OWS supporters you better be prepared for a verbal beatdown.

It’s also funny that the OWS and its supporters want to (wrongfully) use the First Amendment (right to “peaceably assemble”) to hide behind but deride people when they (rightfully)  use the First Amendment (freedom of speech) as Mr. Miller did.

I applaud Mr. Miller.  I don’t agree with the way he said it, but I agree with his intent.

Funny how he has the right to hurl insults at us, but clearly any response that doesn’t agree is anti-First Amendment? Freedom of speech means we get to call you on your bullshit, not just listen to you spew it.

It was a lame, half-assed attempt at a “movement” that I would be ashamed to call myself a part of, and I’m an anarchistic anti-corporatist! Seriously, “leaderless” is another way of saying “directionless”. No leaders, no movement, no change. Simple as that.

His new “Grim n’ gritty” take on Batman stuck a chord in 1986 because it came out amidst the backdrop of Iran Contra, surges Libyan and Palestinian terrorism, the crack epidemic (see Iran Contra), renewed nuclear brinkmanship with the Soviets (who nuke a small Latin American nation in DKR(and Superman) seemingly just because they’re wreckless bastards who felt like it), AIDS, the Culture War with the Christian Right (amongst whom Frank Miller counts himself, as an angry Irish Catholic ), the PMRC, Darryl Gates, Crips and Bloods, cheap Afghan heroin on the streets of America and the last few Dirty Harry movies.

Batman has always been a detective and an invesgtigator first, moving with stealth like a dark shadow against the sky and in partnersip with  his best friend, the local Sheriff. Hard takedowns and excessive use were frowned upon and suspects would be tied up and subdue and left out in front of precinct headquarters.

Before Frank Miller came along, Batman had no need of either and invisible helicopter or Batmobile built like a 30 foot wide armourered tank, bristling with automatic weaponry.

He also never felt the need to beat muggers into a bloody pulp with an iron bar or slam a pimp’s face through a brick wall.

The Batman of tradition is a morally troubled philanthopist who tries to discreetly use his vast personal resources to protect the poor, the wretched and the downtrodden of his city from the predations of organised crime syndicates, corrupt police and public officials and the awful human toll taken in innocent life by the horror of urban blight.

The Frank Miller Batman is a billlionaire capitalist and arms dealer, liked by no-one, who spends his free time  every evening by travelling down to the poorest districts in town by breaking legs, taking names and committing viscious, physical assualts upon street-level hustlers and dime-bag dealers who usually have about five kids to feed and no jobs in the neighbourhood apart from hooker, pimp, dealer or cop.

All the while bellowing at them incredibly loudly (inside or outside his head) that they are “Scum!!” or “Filth!!” or “Wretched human waste!!!

    Or something.

If you think *thatt’*s bad, you should hear what he has to say about Islam….

He actually really DOES want to bomb all their mosques, occupy their countries and concert them all to Christianity… I mean, Ann Coulter SAYS it, but would balk if ever presented with the the bill or an estimate of how much taxes would have to go up in order to even attempt that….Frank Miller actually thinks it’s WORTH spending the money to get it over and done with….

Maybe not racist, but definitely psychobabble bullshit.
It’s also one of the most effective tools to get working class white males to consistently vote republican.

Mr Miller IS indeed entitled to his opinoin. just as others are entitled to call him a mouth-foaming asshole for it, which is what can happen when you express your opinion in a public forum.

This has been posted here before. Why does it need to be posted again?

Oh. Nevermind. Anyway, yeah, the real enemy isn’t corporate America, it’s Islam. Yeah, that makes perfect fucking sense.

who calls people misogynist and emasculating names anymore!? it’s 2011, time to grow up and get a clue.

if you disagree with Josh, formulate an argument and use that as the basis for your posts.

Ha, wrong again!  He and I are not the same person!

And you don’t even know what word you spelled wrong in your first reply!

Grow some balls…. i totally forgot about this anti-bullying BS that is sweeping the nation. HAHAHAHAHAHAH <- I really had to!

Learning to ignore bullshit…  Yeah, when you’re right, you’re right.  I shouldn’t have responded to your comments in the first place.

it was never about ‘bullying’, having ‘balls, or ‘taking a joke’ or even being overly sensitive. it’s actually about treating people with respect enough that discussion is possible. you don’t have to be emily post or politically correct or the perfect little poster, but you should not engage in emasculating/homophobic name calling- it’s juvenile and regressive.

“you guys” whom does that mean exactly?
