Tennessee Becomes First State With TSA Checkpoints On Highway

Terrorists can’t afford airline tickets these days, so the TSA is adjusting to stay one step ahead. Tennessee News Press reports:

“People generally associate the TSA with airport security…but now we have moved on to other forms of transportation, such as highways, buses and railways,” said Kevin McCarthy, TSA federal security director for West Tennessee. They are randomly inspecting vehicles on highways in Tennessee.

I don’t ask the government to come to my job and bag shit up for me, so why am I supposed to do their job of spying for them? Everyday the quest to stop terrorism makes this country a little less free, a little more oppressive, and the whole of America look that much more paranoid and reactionary. I am guessing eventually there will be a ‘checkpoint’ at the end of every driveway…

Ha not only can they illegally search people (well truck drivers for now) but they can take money you make right from your check for medical bills, cable bills, electric bills, and really any other thing you can possibly think of that would or could be a bill.     Not really. Rove is on record saying he considers 1984 a playbook for how a govt should be run. And Obama’s been more subtle about it than Bush’s people were but there’s nothing to suggest they aren’t just picking up the same plan.

    For the Gestapo…I mean the TSA….Free spies are better than paid ones.  Several million sets of eyes are better than only several thousand.  Especially when the masses are tricked into believing they are saving their country by  spying on their neighbors or anyone that they don’t like the looks of.   The money saved goes to greasing someones pocket.   Create a fictional enemy.  Use the media to sensationalize it.  Hypnotize the masses into believing it.  Joseph Goebbels good ol’ SS tactics revised for a modern era.

    It’s not about you doing their spying. It’s about making everyone scared of everyone else. Any person could be the one who turns you in for thoughtcrime, so your safest course is not to share your doubts or fears about the govt with _anyone_ …thereby ensuring that no revolution ever gains enough people to be effective.

    Well, I can’t find the direct quote now, so take my statement as you would any unsupported statement. I know it happened because I used it as a source for an article I wrote a couple years ago but the online source is no longer available. However, it’s trivial to use google to find any number of quotes from Rove about creating reality and that the rest of us are left only to study it and believe their new reality, that as the government they don’t have to deal with reality because they create it. Even without those quotes, it’s pretty easy to watch them implementing 1984 piece by piece.

    But I have to step away from saying he outright said it was a playbook because I can’t demonstrate it now.

    It always starts with the vaguely plausible…and it always ends with the utterly indefensible. TSA fearmongers will encroach on every aspect of life sooner or later…because that ever spiralling budget hangs on proving that you need to be doing more and more and more.

    Most of this hangs on the magic word…”terrorists”. If we can just break middle America’s insane obeisance to that word we could roll back the damage that has been done to civil and human rights…but as long as people respond automatically from the gut with unthinking fear and suspicion…we will remain immortally locked in battle against an invisible foe that requires us to surrender every shred of privacy or freedom we have ever known.

    I’m tempted to consider this the next step against the Occupy movement there, because they’ve had some great legal victories against the police and DHS, but setting something like this up would have taken several months at minimum. It makes sense to roll out a pilot program in a smaller state that’s not densely residential.

    Definitely. And they engaged in an Orwellian legal campaign to scrub parts of their record from the Internet so I can’t say whether my inability to find the quote is because the pages are all just expired (because this was big news for a while a couple years back, about something he’d said previously), or because they were pulled because of legal threats. My article was pulled because of threats of a lawsuit so it’s possible.

    Here is something really wacky. I live in MA and I was stopped by Border Patrol officers. One rte 495 out by exit 7 at a weigh station about a year ago. They pulled me over with a bunch of other cars. I was there about a half hour when they eventually got to my truck, searched it completely inside and out even underneath. My glove compartment and center console compartment too. When they came over for my papers I asked “Do you think there might be illegals in the center console?” He told me to be quiet and to step away from him, putting his hand out. Which I did, but he was acting like I was a threat or something. I didn’t say that in an angry voice or anything just the usual Masshole wise ass way.
    I don’t think it was coincidence that I was there for almost fifteen minutes after they had let everyone else go. Seeing as how I was the only one who made a smart ass comment. They didn’t say anything else to me directly during the stop except to say that I can go, but there were two officers who had a “conversation” not ten feet from me about how people should just learn to be quiet and let them get their job done and there won’t be any unnecessary delays. I got the message, belly up, tail between the legs or there will be consequences. Pavlov would be proud.

    My favorite double think has always been “The Department of Defense”. Defense, heh, no really. Unless the credo written under their official seal is “The best defense is a good offense” Then I’d say that they changed it from “The Department of war” to The DoD just for that rhetorical 180.
