Via ScienceDaily:

The less people know about important complex issues such as the economy, energy consumption and the environment, the more they want to avoid becoming well-informed, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

And the more urgent the issue, the more people want to remain unaware, according to a paper published online in APA’s Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

“These studies were designed to help understand the so-called ‘ignorance is bliss’ approach to social issues,” said author Steven Shepherd, a graduate student with the University of Waterloo in Ontario. “The findings can assist educators in addressing significant barriers to getting people involved and engaged in social issues.”

Through a series of five studies conducted in 2010 and 2011 with 511 adults in the United States and Canada, the researchers described “a chain reaction from ignorance about a subject to dependence on and trust in the government to deal with the issue.”

Case in point, my mom. She won’t listen to any of the daily real news I fish up off of the intertoobz. And my friends don’t want to hear about it either. The social conditioning is really extensive. Peak oil, corruption, ecological collapse, it’s all just noise to them. Well, the corruption actually gets through to them on occassion.

I know how you feel.  Nobody seems to care.  They think it will not effect them.  It seems hopeless sometimes..

Most people are asleep. One thing i found out in my studies is that the human has an auto pilot and its operating it  appears like the person is aware when they are in fact no controlling their own bodies.  It does work it does keep the organism alive for certain amount of time, its supposed to be active only in times of crisses, when its every men for himself but it seems ever since the last ice age most of humanity has not switched off this auto pilot and the machine can only do certain astablished functions , its not creative ,it is not efficient, it not compassionate and it sure is selfish and violent because its programed to fend off disaster constantly. We can see this in how big the US military is for no reason. We need to put the ghost back in the machine before its too late and that takes nurturing from the ones that are compassionate and aware that life can be wonderful if we strive for the greater good and give up on being selfish when we are clearly in a social setting where the greatest gift is the gift of giving. I hope this makes sense to some.

This is why I like to keep my clue-by-4 handy. Some *cough*most*cough* people need to be bludgeoned with the truth. It’s the only way to get through their self-imposed ignorance.

I feel like reposting the scene from “They Live” where ol Roddy tries to get his pal to wear the sunglasses and see the world…just for a moment…as it is…and the desperation with which this attempt was fought off.
