‘Anonymous’ Claims to Steal Security Think Tank Stratfor’s Client List

The Associated Press reports (via CommonDreams):

The loose-knit hacking movement Anonymous claims to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of US-based security thinktank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals’ accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor’s confidential client list – which includes entities including Apple, the US air force and the Miami police department – and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

“Not so private and secret anymore?” Anonymous taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it had already posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor, and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit card details in part because Stratfor didn’t bother encrypting them – an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Anonymous is an obvious lie. The gov.corp will use Anonymous as an excuse to take over the internet via SOPA. Already the indefinite detention bill anyone can label any US citizen as a terrorist. I have no reason to doubt that anybody the govt wants to hold indefinitely, will not only be labeled terrorist but will also be accused of belonging to anonymous. The gov’t will tell us that anonymous is the bad guy, and many will buy it. Soon Anonymous will be synonymous with ‘terrorist’ in the eyes of the public. And no one will love thy neighbor, and there will be war

How can you be sure what their intentions are?
Where are they now? Who are they? These are questions that by the groups’ very nature, cannot be answered. Therefor they may not be trusted. I have learned to trust Wikileaks, because of their transparency and progressiveness, and clear mission statement.  but there is nothing anonymous has done that is progressive, they act like not so intelligent (boastful) persons waiting for a challenge. Surely they can see the dangers of such an organization without transparency, with a name virtually anybody can belong to, during a time when the gov’t is preparing to lock people up, without trial.
