Is It Too Late? The Retreat of Arctic Sea Ice Is Releasing Huge Fountains of Methane

Arctic Ice MeltKeep in mind that methane affects the atmosphere in multiple ways, and that another major Ice Age might be what’s really in the works. Steve Connor reports in the Independent:

Dramatic and unprecedented plumes of methane — a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide — have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean by scientists undertaking an extensive survey of the region.

The scale and volume of the methane release has astonished the head of the Russian research team who has been surveying the seabed of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf off northern Russia for nearly 20 years.

In an exclusive interview with the Independent, Igor Semiletov, of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed.

“Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of metres in diameter. This is the first time that we’ve found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It’s amazing,” Dr Semiletov said. “I was most impressed by the sheer scale and high density of the plumes. Over a relatively small area we found more than 100, but over a wider area there should be thousands of them.”

I think even the ones that say it’s BS know something is happening. Just
look at the insane greed, and stockpiles of worthless paper and promises to
trade for food and new body parts, as if in effort to live at least until
reaching immortality via singularity. ( some have the notion of a live
forever Jesus kingdom rebuilding after the world ends ). Most don’t actually
know how to hunt or grow food, so I think only a few will actually make it. A
good pistol will buy you enough time to make it back to the rifle you never
should have put down to begin with, and a wheelbarrow full of worthless paper
has very little nutrition. It could be that food will only grow in isolated
pockets, and humans will survive in isolated pockets, and the uber rich will
become machines. But if you ask me the idea of singularity is racing the clock,
and the outcome is uncertain at best. I’m getting to be an old man, an old man
that grows food and has set his kid up with diverse properties close to large
bodies of fresh water, and away from heavy populations. IMO it’s going to get
real ugly and I’m kinda glad I won’t live to see it. Shame on the ones who do
nothing ( as seemingly pointless as it is to try ) while they too have seen the
other side of the mountain and somehow think they can buy a way out of this
mess, or care not for the future.

I guess this is what all those eggheads were all talking about when they said “tipping point”. I’m not worried though. This event is easily explainable as merely an unpleasant side effect of the free market. The invisible hand will correct it.

So how much methane are we talking about here? Does it accumulate to more than whats being released every day in the form of farts? I think not.

What a bunch of hot air!  Where is the science? Sure, you can cite thousands of peer reviewed articles by respected scientists, and massive piles of data and undeniable evidence. You can give me absolute proof that we are destroying the planet.  But where is the science?

Doesn’t say this is a new phenomenon just larger than they’ve seen before. It was not clear whether this is a change in this area, or an area they have not been to before.  Also there is absolutely nothing that indicates or even conjectures that these methane fountains are due to some change in the ocean related to climate change….just that they exist and are widespread in an area these guys are studying.  If its been going on for a long time and is a large source of methane….it has not been included in any of the models which purportedly show the past predicting the current situation and then being extrapolated to the future.  If they missed these large vents, what else have they missed (i.e. underwater volcanoes) that may be a larger variable for greenhouse gases than mankind.  If their models are missing significant sources are claimed to predict our current situation….if you add the missing stuff, they will no longer be predictive of the present, and if you can’t even predict the present, extrapolating an erroneous model decades into the future is called fiction…and while I enjoy reading fiction, I don’t let it rule my life.

The Global Warming Debate Is Over: ‘New Scientist’ Magazine Admits Modern Temperatures Are Not Unprecedented

Global Warming (AGW) proponents finally admit defeat? They now say modern warming is just a fraction of past natural warming

    Read here.
The publication New Scientist has been at the forefront of global
warming and climate change hysteria. After years of promoting climate
model quackery and publicizing the ludicrous scare predictions from
models, the editors must have mainlined truth serum as they publish
actual empirical evidence. Or, maybe they’re getting tired of pushing
    fabricated alarmist B.S., eh?

    As
proof, this adjacent chart was published by the New Scientist and it
clearly shows that modern “unprecedented” global warming is no such
    thing.

If the New Scientist is now in the business of promoting truth and
needs a source of additional empirical evidence charts, they certainly
can use the many charts found here and here.

You say, “what the heck is going on here?” Well…after the miserable defeats at Durban, Cancun and Copenhagen, and in combination with the continuing Climategate2.0 exposure of the IPCC’s fraudulent science, the global warming debate may be coming to an end, fitfully.

Maybe a clear sign of AGW proponents begging for mercy is their new
embracement of actual empirical evidence regarding the climate. Enjoy
    while it lasts.

        That’s convenient, and funny!

A metaphor: the fact that trees have fallen naturally in the forest before, doesn’t mean that the ax you’re swinging at one now isn’t the factor taking it down.

        • Simiantongue

Oh yeah!? Well tell me Mr Smartypants if there really is climate change, why is the research always jerky and out of focus? Why can’t they ever get a clear PDF of any research? Ah ha! Gotcha!!

Pure emotionalism with not a single factual statement. Is this what passes for rational discourse on the denialist side? Are you that easily swayed by it? Pathetic.
