Monsanto’s GM Corn Linked To Organ Failure

cornMake sure you have a GMO-free Christmas y’all! Katherine Goldstein and Gazelle Emami report on the consequences of genetic engineering of seeds by Monsanto, for Huffington Post:

In a study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences, analyzing the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers found that agricultural giant Monsanto’s GM corn is linked to organ damage in rats.

According to the study, which was summarized by Rady Ananda at Food Freedom, “Three varieties of Monsanto’s GM corn – Mon 863, insecticide-producing Mon 810, and Roundup® herbicide-absorbing NK 603 – were approved for consumption by US, European and several other national food safety authorities.”

Monsanto gathered its own crude statistical data after conducting a 90-day study, even though chronic problems can rarely be found after 90 days, and concluded that the corn was safe for consumption. The stamp of approval may have been premature, however.

In the conclusion of the IJBS study, researchers wrote:

“Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences in liver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function of these organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologically insignificant as has been proposed by others. We therefore conclude that our data strongly suggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity….These substances have never before been an integral part of the human or animal diet and therefore their health consequences for those who consume them, especially over long time periods are currently unknown.”

Monsanto has immediately responded to the study, stating that the research is “based on faulty analytical methods and reasoning and do not call into question the safety findings for these products.”

Most people have no idea just how bad GMO foods are for them. Here is another great video I highly recommend. It is an hour long (total of four 15min segments).

I bet you stop eating GMO corn after you watch this….  ;)

You did yourself a disservice then. Alex merely introduces Dr. Jeffrey M. Smith. You don’t hear any more of Alex for the rest of the video.

Of course you know Monsanto’s grains are made not so much for eating but for allowing Roundup to be freely used in the environment. Only the United States government considers their corn as safe.

“Only the United States government considers their corn as safe”

And that is only because Monsanto rigged the studies and bought off the regulators.

Oh, I’m certain Monsanto will get in big trouble for this. The issue is being addressed by the Ministry of Wrist Slapping.

Everybody remember this is supposedly the company who has cornered the market on seeds and fertilizers.  In addition this type of corn has a name you would label a hazardous chemical with.  Rumor has it that Monsanto’s seeds only sprout with their chemicals in them.  I guess this must be one of the side effects.  But then again if you are Monsanto and ‘in bed’ with all the major pharmaceutical corporations ( ala Merck, Pfizer etc..) you are going to make a killing riding those pharma stocks .  Organ damage will require drugs to treat and those drugs will only sell when you poison the general population with Mosanto crops. By the way I love how Monsanto responded so quickly to the study, kind of as quick as Citigroup responded to their leaked Plutonomy Report

That Huff piece is from back in January 2010, not Dec 2011 as one would expect of the “latest” news.

Monsanto is right in this case:

    http://mblogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2010/01/15/gm-corn-organ-failure-lots-of-sensationalism-few-facts/

… though that doesn’t make them any less evil (e.g.suing farmers whose fields were contaminated with their seed).

Thanks for pointing that out Oneas, mea culpa, it is not a breaking news story, but of course the consequences of Monsanto’s genetic engineering of seeds is just as relevant today as it was last year.

And that is only because Monsanto rigged the studies and bought off the regulators by rewarding them with cushy jobs. The ‘revolving door’ between the FDA and Monsanto is well known.

The research said that the consumption of the food was linked to organ changes (not organ changes associated with any kind of organ damage, just changes). The Huffpo article changes that to organ damages (for no good reason, just to make it more punchy and less true), the research looked for damage but found none. The editor who wrote the headline came along and saw damages and posted a headline claiming failure (even though there was no organ failure in the study, and organ damages don’t mean organ failure in the same way that human injury does not mean human death. Thousands of people every year injure themselves by cutting themselves on tin cans, tin can’s are not associated with life threatening injuries, or death.

You start out with something that is proof of no harm, then twist the story to make it sound like proof of harm, then claim to have found proof of harm. The study refutes the story based on the study basically.

      Hi Brendan,

Basically, you have demonstrated yourself to be an industry shill. I would be embarassed to associate my name with such an odious and malevolent entity such as Monsanto. However corporate swine are certainly not known for their humility or sense of shame.

I do not suppose, even with our planet on the verge of collapse, that somehow would instill values into the soulless.

        I’m a shill because I can read a study?

Or I’m a shill because I cannot keep my mouth shut when an editor makezs something up and says that it’s from a study when it’s not?

        • Jin The Ninja

no, you are a shill, because your past comment history reads like the corporate/ecocide apologist you are.

(Sigh) As already pointed out by Brendan White, the actual research article did not even demonstrate organ damage, let alone organ failure. There are various statistical and other problems with these researchers and the data, although I think their case for a longer feeding study is worth considering. But you guys are just like Rush listeners, hearing what you want to hear and parroting it back. Does it matter to you that the headline is utterly and demonstrably false?

What is needed is a massive multi-nation class action lawsuit against Monsanto execs, the FDA, and the affiliated accomplice companies.

The evidence of criminal fraud and intent to commit genocide would come out. Criminal precedings would hopefully put these psychopaths in jail. If there was any justice, if found guilty, the psychopaths would be executed for crimes against humanity. A finding of genocide and conspiring to destroy the environment could lead to a war crimes justification for indefinite torture and indefinite detention of these criminals under the new NDAA law.
