Shocking statistics courtesy of AP via CBS News:

Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans — nearly 1 in 2 — have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.

The latest census data depict a middle class that’s shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government’s safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families.

“Safety net programs such as food stamps and tax credits kept poverty from rising even higher in 2010, but for many low-income families with work-related and medical expenses, they are considered too `rich’ to qualify,” said Sheldon Danziger, a University of Michigan public policy professor who specializes in poverty.

“The reality is that prospects for the poor and the near poor are dismal,” he said. “If Congress and the states make further cuts, we can expect the number of poor and low-income families to rise for the next several years.”…

  1. Does anybody ever ask the no brainer question of where the heck the tax dollars for social safety nets come from? How do these boneheads not connect the dots from tax payers losing money to support poor people now becoming the poor people who can no longer fund the social safety nets? Socialism sounds great til everybody runs out of money. Idiot Americans who can’t apply basic math to their gov’t. This is what we get for trusting gov’t to take care of our money. There is no safety net anymore America. There is only inflation and elite bankers stealing whatever you have left.

with a few key strokes on a keyboard
      for the 1%
now that’s a safety net if eye ever saw one

so howz about they fabricate some for the 99%
and we can all make nice
      and play Monopoly some more

In the Real Version of Monopoly, the 1% get Boardwalk and Park Place, whereas the rest of us are either stuck on Baltic Ave or go straight to Jail, without passing go or collecting $200.

    socialism?

  4. The Wall Street banks are stealing everyone’s money and they are the government’s BFF. The majority of Americans are too stupid to understand this or are borderline retarded. This is the outcome you get.

There was an article yesterday about a new planet that could possibly house life, Kepler 22-b I believe. When I brought this up to a few “standard Americans” they didn’t believe me and thought I was a crazy lunatic. My point is this: People are so brainwashed and stupid now they don’t even believe scientific information that isn’t controversial. How do you expect them to believe “whats really going on” ?

    We are so fucked.

You can chalk it up to “Postmodernist” thought which states that there is no objective reality, and therefore no objective truth. Everybody has there own truth, and you can’t tell them different.

That really has absolutely nothing to do with it. I doubt 10% of the US has the education to know about Lyotard, Derrida, or Foucault.

That’s the problem with democracy – once the masses discover they can vote to take others peoples money, they do so.  This is why more than 50% of Americans get more from the Government than they pay in.  Problem is, where is the Government getting its money to hand out to all these people?  You guessed it – the middle class workers and businesses.  Its busting the system.  I say “good riddance”.  The faster it falls to total collapse the faster we can remake it right this time.

      That’s the problem with democracy

We have no democracy. Corporate CEOs and bank owners bought our democracy, and so the money that was supposed to go to the social safety net instead go to corporate tax cuts, corporate tax rebates, and profitable wars.

    • The problem with democracy is that idiots like you are allowed to take part in making/remaking the system. The majority of those 50% that are below the poverty like are indeed putting more back into the system than they are taking out. They’re mostly the working poor, who still pay taxes in the form of payroll and sales taxes. Not only that, but they are the fodder, laboring away in low paying job, that the wealthy class uses to enrich themselves. Not only that, but what meager sums they do bring in though their labor or even through social programs goes right back into the system and makes someone richer. That’s why these people are poor. They’ve got no money. They’re not “getting more than they put in” because at the end of the day they’ve got almost nothing.

I think he’s talking about those folks who get a benefit check from the gubmint each month. When you add it up at the end of the year, they have received more than they have paid in payroll taxes.

Why is this so difficult for people to understand?

I like to refer to Fight Club as “Philosophy for Assholes”. I always love it when I’m proved right.
