Was Cuban Mafia Boss Nixon’s Gay Lover?

Richard NixonDid Nixon make history as our second gay president (following Abraham Lincoln)? In other more minor news, he maybe was drunk during most of his presidency. Via the voice of authority on secret gay affairs, the Daily Mail:

Given everything that Richard Nixon has been accused of, it’s difficult to believe there could be any more skeletons left in his cupboard. Yet the most extraordinary claim is that the homophobic Nixon may have been gay himself.

A new biography by Don Fulsom, a veteran Washington reporter who covered the Nixon years, suggests the 37th president had a serious drinking problem, beat his wife and — by the time he was inaugurated in 1969 — had links going back two decades to the Mafia, including with New Orleans godfather Carlos Marcello, then America’s most powerful mobster.

Fulsom argues that Nixon may have had an affair with his best friend and confidant, a Mafia‑connected Florida wheeler-dealer named Charles ‘Bebe’ Rebozo who was even more crooked than Nixon. The veteran TV newsman Dan Rather recalled how Rebozo ‘transmitted the sense of great sensuality’, paying tribute to his ‘magnetic’ personality and ‘beautiful eyes’.

Fulsom uses recently revealed documents and eyewitness interviews — including with FBI agents — to shed new light on long-standing suspicions among White House insiders that Nixon may have been more than just good buddies with Rebozo.

If he lied about his presidency, then this shouldn’t be a no-brainer.

He was the original “Log Cabin Republican.”

Ha! yeah I get that, but it just seems like a cheap middle school joke of accusing anyone of being gay randomly.  Although in the historical context it isn’t meant as a sleight.

There is a specific theory about Lincoln having a gay relationship with a body guard… I forget what his name was, but wikipedia could probably rectify that.

He probably wasn’t. That’s been proposed by gay activists for years, and been called a hoax by historians for years.

Who gives a shit whether he was gay or not.  Bottom line is he was a crook and it would be interesting to know how many hits he put out on people that opposed him

It’s a very nice idea, but I don’t buy it. One-way affection maybe, but Nixon was far too filled with Puritan Christian values to be able to entertain a gay dalliance without just oozing manifest guilt in the way he managed to with almost every other aspect of his personal conduct. It would be written on every line of his face and he would be denying it every 5 mins if it were true.

I read and reviewed this book on Amazon. My review is by D.Christensen. I have read many books on Nixon and I know a hack job when I see it. The author negates all and any information from the books I have read (and he states as sources) that would detract from the lies he is peddling to the public. In addition Don Fulsom appears in the comment section of my review starting on page 4, (my review received lots of comments) as the author commented on my review he obviously took issue with an informed reader taking issue with his methods. Sadly the author appeared both dishonest, even in our brief exchanges in the commentary. Also, I have noted that many of the named reviewers applauding the book on amazon turn out to be friends and students of his, the names coming from the acknowledgements page of his book and a website created by his students. A pathetic attempt to bolster the books rating on Amazon. Pathetic.

Also the author Leaked the rumors contained in his book two months before the book’s release date. That gave the internet blogs plenty of time to spread the rumor, all without benefit of the “evidence” promised by the book. As it turns out, there is no evidence at all. In fact, my review refutes his so called “evidence” quite well. But then I am very well read about Nixon. As well as listening to the tapes. In fact many of the conversations between Nixon and Rebozo can be heard at the Miller Center and or the Nixon Library as well. Most conversations are two minutes or less, concerned weather reports (as to whether or not the weather would be good enough to warrant a trip to Florida) or Nixon asking Rebozo’s opinion of his speeches, or Nixon asking Rebozo what people thought of him and his job performance.

Incredibly Nixon often amusedly chided Rebozo in these conversations for Rebozo’s womanizing. In one taped conversation Nixon laughed at Rebozo passing up attending LBJ’s funeral in Washington prefering to fly down to Texas with a Miss America winner instead. The amused tone of Nixon’s voice left no doubt that he thought that Rebozo did so to make time with a beautiful woman.
Overall, I am amazed at the lack of journalistic integrity evidenced by the author of this book. In my Amazon review I poke holes in his speculations and counter with refuting evidence. In doing so I flushed him out of his hole and he became very frustrated at my contempt for authors who promote lies to feather their nests. At one point in our discourse in the comments under my review he wrote, “It’s just a book for God’s sake!”

This comment on the authors part is very telling. Apparently he views slipshod reporting and dishonest speculation as no big thing, but I think that no one should undertake to spread baseless rumor about anyone’s life, especially if they are dead, and even if they happen to be Richard Nixon.

Not surprisingly, Don Fulsom ignored all information in the books that he quotes as sources that show that Nixon liked women. He even leaves out the episode in Ehrlichman’s book when Nixon was a bit tipsy and propositioned a pretty young woman campaign worker. Ehrlichman and the others had to hurriedly hustle the woman out of the room to help protect their boss from himself. Nixon was uptight when he was sober, it was another story when he had a few drinks. Nixon was definitely straight.

  • BillBradley12

This story of Nixon coming on to a woman was retold in the Anthony Summer’s book as well. Yet Don Fulsom leaves this story which was witnessed by John Ehrlichman OUT of his book. Why do you suppose he did that? Well because it doesn’t help promote his rumor that’s why.

The Summers book is heavily touted in Don Fulsom’s book and appears to be one of Fulsom’s primary sources. Yet in order to help foster false rumors Don Fulsom fails to take note of all the times depicted in the Summers book when Nixon got too chummy with Women. Including a story where a tipsy Nixon maneuvered a woman into the bathroom to “talk” to her only to have the woman’s husband burst in and pull her away from him.  Fulsom ignore this story and others where Nixon came on to women because he wanted his false rumors to help sell his book and make money for him. Even Nixon deserves better than to have his life desecrated with lies. Don Fulsom even suggests that Nixon didn’t love his children. This book is garbage.
