A Brief History of America’s Dumb Policies Towards Iran

It’s true: if you want peace, you must prepare for war; however, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it–so I guess war with Iran is inevitable. Tom Engelhardt writes at Alternet:

These days, with a crisis atmosphere growing in the Persian Gulf, a little history lesson about the U.S. and Iran might be just what the doctor ordered. Here, then, are a few high- (or low-) lights from their relationship over the last half-century-plus:

Summer 1953: The CIA and British intelligence hatch a plot for a coup that overthrows a democratically elected government in Iran intent on nationalizing that country’s oil industry. In its place, they put an autocrat, the young Shah of Iran, and his soon-to-be feared secret police. He runs the country as his repressive fiefdom for a quarter-century, becoming Washington’s “bulwark” in the Persian Gulf — until overthrown in 1979 by a home-grown revolutionary movement, which ushers in the rule of Ayatollah Khomeini and the mullahs. While Khomeini & Co. were hardly Washington’s men, thanks to that 1953 coup they were, in a sense, its own political offspring. In other words, the fatal decision to overthrow a popular democratic government shaped the Iranian world Washington now loathes, and even then oil was at the bottom of things.

WWIII? Taking all bets! I got 4 to1 on WWIII, 3 to 1 on occupation, and 2-1 on indefinite tense posturing!

    • I’ve got 1000 to 1 that if the US gets itself involved in a war with Iran, Vietnam / Iraq / Afghanistan will look like a stroll in the park by comparison.

I think you oughta check the odds on that. That is a no brainer if shit starts to hit that particular fan. If the US invades and Russia and/or China don’t actually back up Iran, which would be your WWIII scenario, it would still obviously be much worse than Iraq and ‘Nam and “Anistan. What I’m saying is that would be a fairly safe low pay out bet.

        • Maybe I phrased things incorrectly.

What I meant to say is, war with Iran will be a much, much worse scenario than Nam, Iraq, ‘stan, and will make those wars seem pleasant by comparison.

No I get that, I’m just saying the odds favor that outcome if that path is taken, so 1000 to 1 payout is just a bit off.

      • Not really. Asians are honorary White People, so while we were pretty brutal towards them it was nothing we hadn’t already done to other whites. Arabs have no such luck, and Persians, well just what are Persians?

we can only hope…so sick of the hubris…

  3. Once again, A docile US population, too busy looking at their i-phones, will allow their Corporate Masters to run amok killing tens of thousands of innocents!

But… this time the war will be brought to the American doorstep. Mark my words!

If you liked Iraq… You’ll love Iran
