Montana To Use Unmanned Drones Against Wolves

220px-HowlsnowJ. William Gibson writes for the Los Angeles Times:

Congress removed wolves in Montana and Idaho from the protection of the Endangered Species Act in April. And this fall, the killing began.

As of Wednesday, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game reported that 154 of its estimated 750 wolves had been “harvested” this year. Legal hunting and trapping — with both snares to strangle and leg traps to capture — will continue through the spring. And if hunting fails to reduce the wolf population sufficiently — to less than 150 wolves — the state says it will use airborne shooters to eliminate more.

In Montana, hunters will be allowed to kill up to 220 wolves this season (or about 40% of the state’s roughly 550 wolves). To date, hunters have taken only about 100 wolves, prompting the state to extend the hunting season until the end of January. David Allen, president of the powerful Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, has said he thinks hunters can’t do the job, and he is urging the state to follow Idaho’s lead and “prepare for more aggressive wolf control methods, perhaps as early as summer 2012.”

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead recently concluded an agreement with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to save 100 to 150 wolves in lands near Yellowstone National Park. But in the remaining 80% of the state, wolves can be killed year-round because they are considered vermin. Roughly 60% of Wyoming’s 350 wolves will become targeted for elimination.

What is happening to wolves now, and what is planned for them, doesn’t really qualify as hunting. It is an outright war…

Hope the wolves will not be in danger species….   David is right that hunters can’t do the job and i guess his urging to the state will not be workable… a regard from http://www.globaltechnologyblog.com

Savage never meant “Native American” except in the mouths of racists anyway, so no need to “re-appropriate” a word that has multiple meanings.

I wouldn’t call this “hunting” or “war”; I see this more of attempted genocide. Although George Carlin was a comedian, he made many interesting points in his career. He once said “Saving endangered species is another arrogant attempt by humans to control nature”. So if you try to save one species, you end up killing hundreds of another, which makes it pointless. Hunting animals to keep their numbers under control is a worse option. I honestly believe hunting should be abolished in all 50 states. I would agree with saving endangered species, but not killing one species so another can live. I suggest animals shouldn’t be hunted, and nature should do whatever it wants.

The wolves are killed to get hunters jollies off, and to protect the lazy fucking cattle ranchers who can’t bother to tend to their own herds.

    • Joy_isolated | Jan 3, 2012 at 10:11 pm |

In the case of wolves, you might need a history lesson: the only reason they were endangered to begin with was because of (white) cattle ranchers who hunted them to near extinction…so now that they’re back = cattle ranchers still want to hunt them to extinction.

You all know nothing of the facts on the ground.  A simple question which is worth more the lives of 300 wolves or the lives of the 5000+ animals they must/will collectively kill this year.  I mean a bull elk weights more takes longer to reach sexual maturity and lives as long as wolf why should it’s life or 10 of them be less valuable? I will make it easy for all you non hunting wolf lovers out there, there are three animals out there taking up two animals space.  If you really want to help the problem follow these instructions:

    1. take your life savings and buy the cheapest pistol that will function.
    2. use the rest of the money to buy as many acres as possible in wolf/elk country
    3. donate the land to a true “keep it wild” preserve in the area
    4. take the pistol and shot your kids wife and self in the face with it.
    5. rip knowing you made the world better for wild animals

The problem is not wolves elk or politicians.  It’s you. It’s us. We are all the virus of habitat loss.

Photos on this site of people trying to protect their sheep and cattle who are out with their dogs only to find the wolves ripped their guard dogs throats out. Wolves do not kill merely to survive, some also kill for sport. I live here…I know.  They are beautiful animals, but when the packs get too large it can be devastating to other wildlife and domestic animals. It is also a scary feeling putting your foot in a paw print larger than your shoe.  BTW, I don’t support drones to kill them and frankly this is the first I have heard of it.

Sheep and Cattle that eat and consume land they did not evolve to thrive on. Wolves eat herbivorous quadrapeds- domestic one’s when their natural food sources are drastically depleted. The question of them being `scary` or not is outrightly ridiculous. They are a predatory carnivore not a pet.

`Devasting to other wildlife and domestic animals`- what you really mean is that they are devasting to those whom own million dollar herds of cattle on multi million dollar acres of land.

Wolves evolved to hunt in packs for efficiency, they did not evolve to hunt in packs in order to consume more than that which nature provides. Unlike western civilisation that continues it`s nihlistic expansion towards exhausted gaian resources.

Agriculture is not a bad thing. Monoculture is. I know the myth of the cowboy is very popular in the west and in the american psyche in general, but it is a myth with no environmental context.

time to try a new paradigm, instead of holding dominion over nature, why don`t we try to work harmoniously with nature? Of course the billion dollar profits of the cattle/beef industry are part of the nearly insurmontable obstacle in that endeavor.

Sheep and Cattle are central asian steepe and european plains animals. Never meant to be herded in the 10s of millions on the grasslands of turtle island. Nature has a purpose and a balance for these things, but to kill a native apex predator b/c they threaten one of the largest agro industries, is sick beyond measure.

You people are idiots. There’s a reason why the big bad wolf is a villian in all those ffairy tales. I guess sitting in front of your keyboard you’ve never seen wolves kill for sport. Its just a matter of time till some body is killed by wolves in yellowstone. But what do you care there’s no wolves in new york. If a criminal breaks in to your house and steals your tv, I geuss I will assume your to lasy to watch your stuff 24 hrs a day. Fools

  66. Acryliccut | Jun 7, 2012 at 12:11 pm |

There a hell is a hell of a lot more dogs than wolves. Simple logic tells you the stats on that one. If someone steals your stuff, I will wonder why you didn’t get off your ass and watch your stuff 24/7. Beyond that when you starve to death because the ranchers and farmers are out of business, I will laugh at you brcause your a fool.
