Ron Paul Introduces Legislation To Strike NDAA’s Unconstitutional Section 1021

Rep. Ron Paul left the campaign trail on Wednesday to speak on the House floor about the National Defense Authorization Act, which was signed into law on the first day of the new year by Obama.

Paul introduced legislation to strike the NDAA’s Section 1021, the discretionary detention provision authorizing the President to detain persons accused by the government of supporting terrorism.

Ron Paul has serious reservations despite Obama’s issuing a signing statement declaring that he will not use the law to detain Americans. In December, Paul said the bill will accelerate the country’s “slip into tyranny” and virtually assures “our descent into totalitarianism.”

The Texas congressman and presidential candidate said on Wednesday the bill “provides for the possibility of the U.S. military acting as a kind of police force on U.S. soil, apprehending terror suspects, including Americans, and whisking them off to an undisclosed location indefinitely.”…

    Goddammit. I am outraged by nearly all of his economic policies, appalled by his stances on the environment and workers rights (among other things)—by nearly all accounts I think he would be a disaster domestically—and in the midst of my loathing he has to go and say something reasonable.

      I see you beat me to the punch, so to speak.

      But for my part I don’t think it’s a matter of phoniness per se, just that Paul’s getting on in years, is easily distracted and doesn’t have a good enough staff to keep an eye out for these sorts of things.

      Paul’s made some really strong, controversial pro-civil liberties statements that I don’t think can be dismissed as outright fakery.  In a moral climate where people can’t tell the difference between disinterested generosity and outright vote buying (a la Mitt Romney), you’re not likely to pick up a lot of juice by doing the right thing.

      Paul needs more help than he’s getting.  To me he seems a decent sort at heart.  Just not terribly bright and without a strong staff.

        I’m curious as to how he’s coached to respond to questions of returning to the gold standard and other rather controversial (if not outright bonkers) ideas he’s had.  I’m hoping someone eventually brings that up at one of these damn debates

    I applaud Ron Paul for doing something to actually support democracy, which is an activity I see sadly lacking in many politicians today, particularly the Presidential candidates. Still not going to vote for him though…

      Hahahaha who else is there to vote for though really???  Obama, Romney, Gingrich???  ROFLMFAO  The establishment has taken over and Ron Paul is our last hope.  It will be in the people’s hands if he fails, our should I say once he does… (Too many brainwashed Americans that are heavily influenced on bullshit media)  I love Ron Paul and believe his Libertarian policies are perfect. I don’t understand why half of you fail to understand the philosophy of economics. Socialism hasn’t and will NEVER work. We aren’t even functioning from a true capitalistic free market, yet everyone has given up on it. Look up Peter Schiff and study Austrian economics. You’ll suddenly see that our problems are linked the Keynesian style monetary policy… Which is print money, acquire/sell debt, bailout inevitably failing businesses, and release a stimulus to “fix” the recession. As soon as Nixon eliminated the gold window back in 1971, our currency has had absolutely nothing to restrict or keep it maintainable… Inflation is BAD, yet the Keynesian system pretends its ok… Here’s a video explaining the housing bubble and why we are currently in one of the worst recessions… If there’s one thing i’ve learned its that no one wants to do whats best for the country. Everyone wants shortcuts and is unwilling to sacrifice. Ron Paul and Peter Schiff understand and know economics…

    Bless you Dr. Paul. I think it’s funny how people say you’re a racist when you fight for civil liberties more than any other candidate including the completely one sided drug incarceration laws and penal system. I don’t do drugs, I just wish it was dealt with in a different way.

      That doesn’t mean he can’t say, or hasn’t said, incredibly racist things in the relatively recent past.

    If you don’t vote for Ron Paul, who are you going to vote for? Whom ever they prop up as the lesser evil. That is the problem with the system, or part of it anyways.   If people can’t see it, let me spell it out for you. This is thee last chance, this is the end game, this is it.  And I’m not sure this country is not too far gone but I’ll be damned if I vote for the lesser evil.  Ron Paul is the one that can give the people a fighting chance.  If Ron Paul does not get the nomination he will not win, too many voting for the lesser evil.  They know this and there’s not a chance they will hand the GOP nom to him because he will win.

    If Ron Paul does not get elected this will be my last time ever casting a vote.  What would be the point.
