Ron Paul Scored Higher Than President Obama on the ACLU Report Card

This is embarrassing for anyone who voted for “Hope and Change” … and the highest score goes to former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, who was not even allowed to debate in televised debates. So reports Bob Egelko in the San Francisco Chronicle:

The highest overall rating went to former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a Republican-turned-Libertarian, who opposes the Patriot Act and — unlike Obama — supports the right of gays and lesbians to marry. Among the leading Republican candidates, libertarian-leaning Rep. Ron Paul also got a higher score than Obama despite low ratings in several categories.

The ACLU gave the Texas congressman high marks for opposing the Patriot Act and indefinite detention of suspected terrorists, condemning waterboarding and voting to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell.” But it criticized Paul’s call for an end to “birthright citizenship” for children of illegal immigrants, his support of the law that denies federal marriage benefits to same-sex couples and his opposition to abortion.

Obama, endorsed by abortion-rights groups in 2008, was given three torches on “reproductive choice” by the ACLU, which cited his support for federal funding of Planned Parenthood and family-planning programs but also his bowing to Republican demands to ban funding for poor women’s abortions in Washington, D.C., as part of legislation to prevent a government shutdown.

I like a lot of what Disinfo puts out, but this fairly regular (what seems like) promotion of Ron Paul is lacking.  Chris Hedges gives a good analysis of Ron Paul here…

    http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/ChrisHed

…(about in the middle) among many other great points and analysis.

And Chomsky clarifies the difference between how Libertarianism is defined in the USA compared to what most of the rest of the world and history defined it as, “Extreme advocate of total tyranny.”  Worse than state tyranny, the Ron Paul / USA version of Libertarianism is private and completely unaccountable:

I would much rather see Disinfo presenting more Anarchist and positive forms of Direct Democracy (General Assemblies, etc), and/or exploring the ideas of candidates like Jill Stein — or at the very least more critical perspectives on the multitude of Ron Paul’s faults.

Disinfo is 98% stories submitted by readers. I will post more anarchist content if more people want to see it  (personally i would LIKE to see that, but have preferred in the past to post articles that can generate discussions relating it to anarchist views i.e. indigenous sovereignty, feminism, holistic history rather than outright ‘anarchist’ content). I have though posted interviews with Zizek, Chomsky among other things, so i think it is a matter of catching the posts when they appear. I am a well-known anti fan of ron paul, but many of articles that are posted by his supporters can be throughly critiqued using an anarcho-framework and/or utilised to generate discussions on ‘real’ libertarianism/lib-soc/anarchism.

lol i appreciate that Calypso; however i fear your expectations may be too high, and my wrote content too frivolous to have any endearing quality.

Oh, I know Disinfo has posted  a variety of stuff, anarchist viewpoints included, and that is great.  But, for example, I haven’t seen any postings on Ron Paul’s very obvious racist letters; not just the ones he sort-of disavows, but the one he actually signed.  And some exploration of the distinctions between how most people view/interpret Libertarianism in the USA versus how it’s traditionally viewed and how it’s viewed outside of the USA.  Our particular brand of it in the USA is very warped and tyrranical, further giving way to the move towards facism that corporatism creates.

  7. How could anyone score lower than someone who claims the right to murder citizens without judicial oversight and incarcerate citizens without recourse to the courts?

Yeah, sure, Paul scores high now, but if he ever gets the Oval Office, he’ll be batting the same fascist RBI as Obama and his predecessors.
