Carbon Dioxide Makes You Fat

So sayeth some Danish scientists, as reported in Science Nordic:

No, this is not 1 April — and this is not an April Fool’s hoax. Mad as it may sound, Danish researchers have announced a theory that may not only explain why people all over the world are getting fatter and fatter, but also warn of the serious consequences for life on Earth of continued pollution of the atmosphere by CO2 emissions. In itself, the theory is quite simple: CO2 contributes to making us fat.

The theory arose several years ago, when Lars-Georg Hersoug studied the development of obesity among people who had been followed over a number of years in the so-called MONICA studies (Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardio-vascular Disease) in Denmark. These studies have mapped the lifestyles of thousands of Danes. Hersoug was surprised to see that both fat and thin people taking part in the studies over a 22-year period had put on weight — and the increase was proportionately the same. Orexins — which are neuropeptide hormones — in the brain stimulate wakefulness and energy expenditure. These hormones may be affected by CO2, and this can cause us to go to bed later, affecting our metabolism so it is easier for us to put on weight. But orexins are also involved in the stimulation of food intake.

“The normal theory is that fat people get fatter because they don’t move as much as they should,” says Hersoug, now a post-doc at the Research Centre for Prevention and Health at Glostrup University Hospital. “But the study showed that thin people also get fatter, and this happened over the whole of the 22-year period of the study.”…

Bullshit. People are getting fatter and fatter because the food we are eating is getting worse and worse for you.

^This^…combined with less and less exercise.

Yeah, it’s a bunch of processed bullshit. Never eat processed, and if you eat any meat, buy it from a hunter you know.

This long pork is delicious. What sort of pig did you say it was from?

Many local farmers are now raising grass-fed and finished beef cattle.  I bought a side last year.  It’s leaner than commercially raised beef so not as tender unless you marinade it.  But it’s nice to know my family isn’t ingesting antibiotics and hormones with their steak.

As a chemist I’d have to agree with you. CO2 could have a minor affect on those hormones but the keyword their is “minor” little, if any

We don’t think it could possibly be because people have to take personal responsibility for being  lazy and eating crap, do we? I mean… being responsible for our own actions seems to be anything but a western value.

Criminal drug addicts get more sympathy than someone struggling with too much weight.  Could it be a horrible fear that some day we might look like that?

  4. Blsxaisede March 14, 2012 at 1:46 pm #

Seriously? Obesity is caused by either glandular problem, laziness or a food addiction. And if you catch a food addiction early, like I did, you can control it.

Fading Western LightsEven America’s European ancestors a much
smaller, smarter, tougher breed! Check your history books. Asians,
all people of the Vast Pan Eurasian Empire, we cannot control, and
soon to dominate this entire world, much smaller people! You Google,
You see! 300 M Americans consume a larger part of the world’s
resources today, but not for long. The other 6000 M folk are
fighting hard for a fair share. The Chinese portion, a mere 1600 M
, already contenders for a bigger share of the American portion. China
plans a “Population Bomb” ( Again, You Google, You see!) as
we speak, to replace aging workers, to support their Elderly.
Question: Will larger bodied, high calorie, high material
consumption, Americans survive this human revolution in progress, as
we speak?More hands make light work, and similarly more minds
make more discoveries, more advances, and China leads the way in
Science, deliberately educating the very highest IQ’s they can find,
selected from a vast gene pool, one America cannot match, and setting
these superior intelligences to tasks – like electric bullet trains,
Thorium LFTR reactors or better, and they are winning these
battles!Oldsmobile’s, symbols of America’s ‘Golden Age’ fuelled by
the ‘Cheap Oil Era’, are rarely seen, save for photos in historical
annals. No really efficient, front wheel drive, or 4 wheel drive
hybrid, or ‘all electric’ car, wearing this marque, built by the now
raped GM corporation, built by this once leading country in
automotive technologies, exists – and for reason! No provision was
made at the board room tables for the future by the vicious barracuda
Capitalists, the cut throat, opportunists, the stunningly callous
vulture capitalists, in this Corpocracy! They have taken their
Capital, and run to Chinese investments for even bigger returns on a
much larger population, leaving the workers in America as remnants in
a once great country, suffering a down hill existence with no hope,
schools preparing them for industrial and manufacturing jobs where
neither exist nor will ever appear, as Third World conditions spread
outward from the likes of Detroit City, Gary Indiana, The Ohio
Valley. Even today, rumours of a superior, well financed Air
Power, Space Defence, to protect their investments there, are
heard from Asia, from the vast Pan Eurasian land mass, the new Empire
    of the 21st Century.

I stopped reading after a couple of sentences.  Everybody is standing on their own block shouting we are the greatest.  Ho hum.

An association does not mean causality.  “Thin people also get fatter”(!?!) Maybe they were all eating similar things, eh? How about other factors such as the amount of sugar in the Danish diet? If everyone is eating more sugar, everyone will likely gain some weight.

So, let me see if I got this correctly: someone living on a raft in the middle of the Atlantic ocean off the coast of the US will be fatter than someone living on a raft in the middle of the Atlantic ocean off the coast of Brazil…because of the CO2…

  8. preposterone March 15, 2012 at 9:45 am #

I’m thinking more along the lines of Co2 in things like sodas and beer. Intake to the stomach instead of lungs. CO2 in blood, Blood to brain, brain slow down, brain go homer. Hooray Beer!

I think we should ignore fat and focus only on fitness.  About 5-6 years ago, I started a regular exercise regimen (1-2 hours a day of moderate to heavy aerobic activity) and have stuck to a fairly low glycemic-index diet.  I’m still over 200 pounds and haven’t really lost any weight, but my muscles are more toned and all of my blood panels have improved immensely.

I have better endurance while jogging than many of my thinner friends and I tend to eat far healthier than them.

So maybe it’s the CO2.  Or maybe it’s just fate.  Whatever the reason, I’m tired of being treated like some kind of lazy glutton because of how I look.  If you’re going to accuse someone of being unhealthy or healthy based off of weight, you’re probably going to be wrong more often than not.

A pound of relish and an anchovy would kick ass!

Who doesn’t gain weight as they age?

  12. Michele N Morgan March 23, 2012 at 12:00 pm #

Most people have too much access to lots of cheap starches, meats, processed stuff, and sweets.  Fresh fruits and veggies, which fill you up for less calorie load, are getting more and more expensive (and don’t taste nearly as good as anything full of butter, potato, salt, and gravy).  Plus, we live in a culture that has gone from hard work and agriculture, to sedentary, air conditioned, and indoors.  Deadly combo if you don’t exercise.
When you go from running around like a little kid to sitting down and doing indoor things and don’t change the way you eat, guess what’s going to happen?

Then, we wonder what happened, and just blame everything else rather than taking the measures necessary.  It takes hard work, willpower, and taking up for yourself and saying “It’s my choice”.

People are getting fat because of CO2 but it’s not the CO2 in the air . It’s the CO2 in soda and beer.
