Speech-Jamming Gun Unveiled By Japanese Researchers (Video)

SpeechJammerIt’s only a prototype, but if it worked for a longer amount of time, wow. Geeta Dayal writes on Wired’s Underwire:

Two Japanese researchers recently introduced a prototype for a device they call a SpeechJammer that can literally “jam” someone’s voice — effectively stopping them from talking. Now they’ve released a video of the device in action. “We have to establish and obey rules for proper turn-taking,” write Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada in their article on the SpeechJammer (PDF). “However, some people tend to lengthen their turns or deliberately disrupt other people when it is their turn … rather than achieve more fruitful discussions.”

    this device as packaged has limitations – regardless of power, the range is limited to ~0.25 X 1150 (speed of sound in air) about 300′, the source of the speech disruption is obvious and in a public context, would have to be protected from pissed off people who actually want to hear the speaker, and can work on only one person at a time.

     If you stop and think about it, this machine will not work longer than it already does.
    If you stop the voice, there will be nothing feeding into the mic, and seeing as it needs the voice going in to use as the canceller…….. it wont ever work, unless it can predict the future of whatever may be coming out of your mouth.

    A quick look at the specs provided and the principle of operation seems to indicate that this relies on some fairly specific “automatic” reactions in the brain of the target. I have the feeling that with a small amount of training, this can easily be overcome.
