The U.N. Happiness Project

File-Face-smileTimothy W. Ryback reports for the New York Times:

Next Monday, the United Nations will implement Resolution 65/309, adopted unanimously by the General Assembly in July 2011, placing “happiness” on the global agenda.

“Conscious that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal” and “recognizing that the gross domestic product […] does not adequately reflect the happiness and well-being of people,” Resolution 65/309 empowers the Kingdom of Bhutan to convene a high-level meeting on happiness as part of next week’s 66th session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

An impressive array of luminaries will be speaking for this remote Himalayan kingdom. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales will open the meeting via a prerecorded video missive. The Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz will speak on “happiness indicators,” as will the economic shock therapist Jeffrey Sachs. The Bhutanese prime minister will represent King Jigme Khesar Namgyel, the reigning Dragon King of the Bhutanese House of Wangchuck. (The kingdom became a constitutional monarchy in 2007.)

For the 32-year-old Dragon King — Bhutan means “land of dragons” in the local Dzongkha language — U.N. Resolution 65/309 represents a global public relations triumph and the realization of a hereditary ambition, initiated by his grandfather 40 years ago, to establish Gross National Happiness (G.N.H.) as an alternate model to Gross National Product (G.N.P.) as a measure of national progress…

There is no little irony in having Prince Charles open the proceedings. This is a man who doesn’t even dress himself, employs someone to squeeze the toothpaste onto his tooth brush, got to marry his mistress, has more than one rather large home…and still never stops moaning about his lot.

  3. U.N.happy……haha

  4. How can the UN say happiness is one of their agendas? The UN is the same group that has pushed agenda 21 all over the world including the US limiting and outlawing citizen land ownership. As well as the UN is also who Bush and Obama answer to and  both Bush and Obama have done every thing in their power to weaken the sovereignty of the country, destroy the economy, criminalize freedom, criminalize the 1st 3rd 4th and 5 amendments. Sold out every industry we had in the US that made us a prosperous country and gave American a chance at the american dream. Obama openly stated he does not answer to congress only to the UN.

The UN supports the IMf the most corrupt lending group in the world that does nothing but strip countries of their resources by forcing countries to borrow funds then demanding repayment instantly the looting the country for every thing of value.

Don’t forget the UN formed REX 84 the plan to kill 90% of the global population.

  5. The Kingdom of Bhutan’s “Gross National Happiness” was one of the world’s most effective PR campaigns. Everyone falls over themselves warmly smiling about how wonderful the peaceful Buddhist kingdom is … very few people are aware of the sheer brutality of the Wangchuck dynasty toward the Bhutanese people, particularly its Lhotshampa minority. Or, how, today – even two decades after they instituted “democratic reforms” – the kingdom is still, for all intents and purposes, an absolute monarchy.

A state uses violence and coersion as a tool to maintain its power. ‘Democracy’ is EVERYWHERE used as a slogan- to lend credibility to the state, when in fact true democracy doesn’t really exist ANYWHERE.

  6. This is a very huge relevancy project that UN has made I was so happy on this…thanks for posting

  7. I wonder if this would make Sadness illegal, because it harms the GNH average, impeding progress.
