Wal-Mart Will No Longer Have People Greeters At The Door

Wal-Mart GreeterSign of the times? Claire Gordon writes on AOL Jobs:

After 30 years, “People Greeters” will no longer welcome Walmart customers with a “cart and a smile.” Four months after Walmart got rid of its night-shift “People Greeters,” the big-box retailer is moving its day-shift greeters inside the store. Walmart claims it’s all in the name of better customer service, but the announcement has left some greeters uncertain about the future of their jobs.

Jerome Allen has greeted morning shoppers at Walmart for five years, the last two at a supercenter in Fort Worth, Texas. He heard through the grapevine that the store was reassigning its night-shift greeters, but was surprised when the store manager called him into his office on Thursday, and told him that there would be no more door greeters at all.

Allen’s new position, which begins Feb. 6, will be to stand in “high traffic” areas of the store, ask customers if they need any assistance, and direct the flow of traffic. Allen doesn’t think his new position will be particularly useful. The store, he said, already has a full roster of employees manning the floor, who are required to ask nearby customers if they need any help, as dictated by the “10-foot Rule.”

Best decision Wal-mart ever made.  Having covered the breaks for people greeters it is a pointless position.

    • But it was a position that kept people imployed.

      •  That is a stupid argument. Whats the point of paying someone for a completely pointless position like that? It was bound to be phased out at some point. Its not Walmarts job to permanently employ the unemployable.

wal mart doesn’t serve a purpose souless. it only serves profit and and an endless void of consumerism and degradation of humanistic values.

on a certain level there is benefit to employing the unemployable, walmart wages are a joke, employing a handfull of greeters is good pr. keeping certain segments of the population from sinking too low is a very self serving action. people without jobs are more likely to rebel and start throwing bricks

exactly. greeters work to ‘humanise’ wal mart, which makes getting rid of greeters quite foreboding, because wal mart is so entrenched in the culture it obviously doesn’t care how it is ‘percieved’ anymore.

        • You’re right, poor walmart, poor multimillion dollar corporations, why should they have to employ people? Actually you are absolutely right, who are these greeters? Usually old people who need a job to survive? Fuck ’em! If those old bags can’t dig a hole then they might as well go lie down in one.

  3. “But Allen isn’t convinced. ‘I don’t think they’re going to let me stand around doing nothing,’ he said.”
You’re ALREADY standing around doing nothing!

  4. Proof that the unemployment rate is going down. Definitely.

This saddens me. A lot of senior citizens do that job to supplement fixed incomes. Wal-Mart–not just Wal-Mart, but American corporations in general–have become completely soulless, a far cry from the mom-and-pop business that they started from. We need to go back to that, when a family could support itself off of its own business, instead of being slaves to these big-box giants who don’t give a shit about people, only profits. This is one major thing wrong with our country today, yet few seem to be complaining about it.

  6. Given the volume of items Wal~Mart gets from China, the Chinese mandatory abortion law, and the number of people who identify strongly as “pro-life” or “pro-choice”… I can’t understand how Wal~Mart gets any shoppers in the first place. Buy Chinese, pay for forced abortions.  Maybe those idiots picketing abortion clinics would do better to picket Wal~Mart.

  9. What kind of a job is a People Greeter anyway?  I don’t get it.  🙁

  10. Well, there goes my retirement plans.  Now what am I going to do, to make up for the pension and retirement income my underwater house and decimated 401K was supposed to provide?

I would rather be unemployed that be forced to smile all day at a bunch of bloated, ugly strangers. This world has far, far too many people. Of this 7 billion, 6 could be done away with. Customer service is the toilet cleaning duty of white collar. If the cherished customer can’t locate his extra small condoms in aisle 29 that’s not my problem.
