White House Releases Death Of Bin Laden Trailer

Barack Obama is the president, but more importantly, he’s the star of the Barack Obama movie. You may not have been aware that his first term was being turned into an officially sanctioned documentary as it happened — here’s the minute-long teaser clip released by his reelection campaign on the killing of Osama bin Laden:

Madison Avenue:  “Helping you to persuade yourself for over 100 years”

Pretty hacky work here, but really it’s not intended to present a convincing, cogent argument with any intellectual rigor.  It’s merely designed to demonstrate that Obama has an acceptable level of commitment to a certain viewer’s pre-determined policy preferences.

This particular add seems crafted primarily to defuse the level of effectiveness of pants-wetting, knee-jerk anti-terrorist propaganda from the Right.  I think the hope is that jingoistic militarists will say to themselves, “Well, we can’t use the ‘weak-on-terrorism’ trope here.  Let’s move on to something even stupider, like “social issues”.”

Be that as it may, Obama’s still black.  I don’t see it as particularly likely that he will be completely successful in countering the deeper American archetype underlying pro-interventionist proparanga:  White Empire.  This is really just a throw-away stalling tactic.

Theoretically, the communications that the Occupy movement opened between “Right” and “Left” wings of the countercultural spectrum should result in folks pouncing on this hacky bit of statist propaganda and forging a more robust understanding of the fight for America’s soul.

But I tend to doubt it.  This appeals to the exact strain of shabby pragmatism that’s plagued the “Left” for the last 40 years and the “Right’s” core belief that social relations must necessarily be mediated through violence.

  2. Kind of a contrast to the video below.
