Yoga Is A Sex Cult

tantraYogis embroiled in sex scandals shouldn’t surprise anyone, writes William J. Broad in the New York Times:

… Why does yoga produce so many philanderers? And why do the resulting uproars leave so many people shocked and distraught?

One factor is ignorance. Yoga teachers and how-to books seldom mention that the discipline began as a sex cult — an omission that leaves many practitioners open to libidinal surprise.

Hatha yoga — the parent of the styles now practiced around the globe — began as a branch of Tantra. In medieval India, Tantra devotees sought to fuse the male and female aspects of the cosmos into a blissful state of consciousness.

The rites of Tantric cults, while often steeped in symbolism, could also include group and individual sex. One text advised devotees to revere the female sex organ and enjoy vigorous intercourse. Candidates for worship included actresses and prostitutes, as well as the sisters of practitioners.

Hatha originated as a way to speed the Tantric agenda. It used poses, deep breathing and stimulating acts — including intercourse — to hasten rapturous bliss. In time, Tantra and Hatha developed bad reputations. The main charge was that practitioners indulged in sexual debauchery under the pretext of spirituality.

Early in the 20th century, the founders of modern yoga worked hard to remove the Tantric stain. They devised a sanitized discipline that played down the old eroticism for a new emphasis on health and fitness…

I don’t see what the problem is?

The problem is that when some people dont ‘get some’, they dont let anyone ‘get some’!

Broad made the rounds on NPR a few weeks back doing interviews for his new book. Quite interesting.

Yoga originating as a Tantric practice should come as little shock, though.

What’s wrong with having beautiful intercourse with ones consort with her ankles behind her head?

Nothing at all…unless her husband/BF finds out.

As Patanjali, a well-respected authority on yoga wrote, there are two main classifications.  There is Hatha Yoga which is concerned with the material body.  Then there is Raja Yoga which deals with having the self gain control of the three-fold physical, emotional and mental personality so that it can experience who it is.

Yoga, or union, has been seen in the west as Hatha yoga.  The higher Raja Yoga is hardly recognized.   Hatha stimulates the body so naturally the sexual organs are going to be effected.  While Raja Yoga also can even more potently stimulate the personality, the focus is on clearing of the personality of its lower entanglements.  It is a process which takes place over time and lives.  Sex, as the World Teacher Maitreya has stated, is not a sin – it is something though that is approached differently at different stages on the evolutionary path.

“Do not preach that sex is dirty. It is natural and does not need to be taught. It develops with the evolutionary forces of life. The true Master is awareness, which teaches at the right moment.”

a sex cult? that’s what i’ve been looking for all my life!

  • DeepCough

Last I checked, the word “yoga” literally means “sex” (if you wanna split linguistic diphthongs about it, it technically means “union”). I mean, what else did you think “Downward-Facing Dog” was for?

    • le kriyavan

Technically, it means “yoke,” though “union” is the common, acceptable transliteration. And it refers to a goal of union with the Divine, not with a sex partner.

      • Number Two

so you can’t bhakti yr. sex partner as an avatar of the divine to achieve union? come on…..

        • le kriyavan

Like you indicate, the goal is union with the Divine. If you bhakti your sex partner as your sex partner and not as an avatar of the Divine, well, just look at the divorce rate in the U.S.

Last I checked, it’s a belief in Hinduism that a snake (“Kundalini”) sits at the base of the spine, and in the act of coitus, it slowly crawls up the veterbrae, or through the “chakras,” until it hits the brain and causes an orgasm or “enlightenment.” But that’s just off the top of my head.

        • le kriyavan

          Are you trolling?

          vertebrae =/= chakras
          orgasm =/= enlightentment
but the last line is pretty funny.

            You are the troll asswipe.

      • Dead Fucking Gossip

Lest you forget in American society a pathetic majority of people are sensation types who have the depth of your slimy fucking name.  Yoga is America is the new singles bar. Lie about if you want asshole but it is almost totally bullshit.

        • le kriyavan

Let me get this straight… you couldn’t give your girlfriend what she needed, so she got it somewhere else (happened at yoga class, apparently), and now you spread your bile on internet forums? I would normally feel sympathy for you, but since I make no claims toward enlightenment, or even altruism, and since you are just about the most offensive, ignorant douchebag I have seen on the internet for some time, why don’t you just go fuck yourself?

    • gwen jackson

if you think downward facing dog is a good sex position, i have to assume that either your knowledge of yoga or sex is severely lacking.

  • rus Archer

how does consensual sex between adults constitute abuse?don’t want to fuck your teacher?
    then don’t

  • serpentgoddess14

This article is irrelevant, lame, ignorant of the subject matter. An outsiders hopeless point of view and incorrect as far as the research goes. No better than tabloid writing.

    • gwen jackson

indeed, but you just described most of what NYT prints.

  • gwen jackson

hey, that william broad is some kind of genius. maybe next he can do an article providing his insight as to why conservative christianity produces so many philanderers, or why Catholocism produces so many pedophiles…
